Hi,

The only DVD player I can find that plays Divx files from a USB thumbdrive/hard drive is this old Yahoo! branded player. Does anyone know of any others? I've seen ones that play from flash media, but am having a hard time finding ones to play from a USB stick.

Thanks for any pointers,
grimholtz
edit: Found the Philips DVP5960, too, but I'd like more options...any others?

Why do you need more options?

There is an LG model that does this, but it seems less reliable on the video formats than the Philips. The very nice Oppo 970 also has a USB port, but the USB inmplementation has some flaws andpeople seem to have problems with playing video from thumbdrives. - DR

Because, based on the DVP5960 thread here at avsforum, it sounds like a lot of people aren't happy with it. Do you think it is currently the best choice for a divx-enabled player with USB port?

Many of the negative posts were from last Spring/summer, on old firmware. A few others had HDMI handshaking issues, which were probably not the player's fault.

This is an inexpensive player, whose performance and PQ is on par with other machines in the same price range based on Mediatek and Zoran one-chip decoders (eg, sub-$100 players from Sony, Samsung, LG, Toshiba, etc.). Not great, but decent.

Well, the Oppo 970 also has USB, and has better PQ (and more adjustability), but if playing movies over the USB port is a high priority then at this point in time the Philips is a better choice. (Another excellent choice is an HTPC, of course.) - DR

Thank you very much for the advice.

The problem with that is it needs to be wife-friendly. My wife doesn't want to muck with Windows Media Center or MythTV just to watch a DVD (and, honestly, neither do I...the DVR is enough of that). I was actually considering a LamaBox, but living in the U.S., I don't need the lawsuits that might follow it.
