unleashed, i tried the 1080p transformers on dvp5960 on usb and it was a no-go.
Pardon my ignorance, but can u tell us why, it says not supported, do we need a 1080p dvd player or should we burn these files on a dvd and then play it from the disc instead of usb??

Thanks

Kris's rating on the 5960 was not crappy, the numerical score puts it near the top for sub-$200 players. He says that it does not compare favorably to the flagship players of other major manufacturers, which is true, but it is also not a $300 player. In any event, Kris's tests, while carefully done and quite useful, are not always the last word on things like real-world PQ, especially since they do not involve the kind of calibration that one can do while optimizing one's system.

That said, these are budget players, nobody should expect miracles (like Realta-quality video processing or HD video decoding). - DR

lol. Listen, I would rather have the HDMI cable AND save the $5 bucks. But I didn't think Philips would go for that

In general you shouldn't expect anything over 720x480-NTSC or 720x576-PAL to play (either burned or from USB) because of the limitations of the decoding chipset and memory configuration.

Got one today from BB. Initial impression is ok, but with one annoyance: I find it very difficult to back to the previous chapter/track. When I press the "Prev" key on the remote control multiple times, it just keeps going to the current chapter. Once in a while I get lucky and it will go to the previous chapter. Anybody experiencing this?

It has the option to auto-detect the aspect ratio and pillar box as appropriate.

Go back to that website, choose the search option to list all sub-$200 players, and look at the numerical ratings. The 5960 does very well, below the Oppo 970 and only marginally below the Sony, and well ahead of many players with good reputations on this forum, like the predecessor of the Pioneer you asked about. - DR

I have to agree but, having had the Oppo 970 I believe that the 5960 & 5982 do a superior job with the PAL conversion; I had a like of framing jumping on PAL discs from the UK (didn't seem to be an issue with PAL Region 4) and these machines play them back almost flawlessly so, in that respect PHILIPS has the leg up!

Do you have seperate speakers. Mine looks OK with velo CHTv speakers.

For best audio go for oppo 970H

If the digital outputs are used (optical, coaxial, HDMI) isn't the sound unadulterated by the DVD player? The D/A conversion could be poor, though, with the sound that comes through the left and right rear outputs, I suppose.

But, in this case the HDMI output should be unaffected by the player. Correct me if this is wrong please.

mine didnt seem much different, in that you have to hit skip before 1 second of the chapter plays. but try pausing the movie first. also, do the number keys work (i.e. if you just hit 4 does it go to chapter 4)? I forgot to check that (i am at work now).

So far I am very happy with the player though, i ran I ROBOT (the only movie I had twice with the same video transfer) on both the 5982 and my old player (a Pioneer piece of crap) and switched back and forth to marvel at the improvement. im not a videophile (i dont even understand half of what you guys are saying) but I know "better" when i see it

am concerned at the lack of DTS though. I think I have a few DVDs that are DTS only (Saving Private Ryan?).

I am getting use to the "Prev" button functionality and its time sensitivity. I will also try other options you mentioned.
BTW, DTS is supported by this DVD player. I was also concerned at first, since Philips website or DVD player's specs don't mention DTS at all. But, I verified DTS is supported (by using T2 DVD). Overall, this DVD player looks pretty decent.

Just go into the sound mode menu and try the different options until you find the one you like best. The options make a big difference in how the output sounds. - DR

Just picked this up at best buy for $69.99. Surprisingly it's $20 cheaper than the 5960.

One annoying thing. If you pause a DVD and leave it paused for a long time - after a while the unit powers off. It sucks because it doesnt remember the last location if the divx file is being played from my usb flash. I have a home based business and sometimes i get stuck on a call for a while and i end up having to search through the clunky FF feature to find where i left off. Other than that it's a great player. The fact it needs to "boot up" when ejecting a disc can be annoying too.

Yeah the search buttons aren't that responsive.
If you press 'Prev' 2X really quickly it'll go to the previous chapter.

Has anyone tested 1080P? Should you use progressive scan when playing 1080P through the HDMI?

This Phillips is $30 less right now. What features make the Pioneer worth it? I also don't see it available....
