Of course good is relative. I think the DVP-NS75H is a very good budget upscaling player for region 1 DVD-V.

I heard the same from the Oppo Product Development VP:

"The chipset is again a Mediatek, but this time they customized for OPPO."

I think this player provides a nice incremental step forward from the 970, but it's not earth shattering. I would like to see them jump into the HD field with a low-priced BD player (as that's a category that's still unfilled), but they've said in the past they want to wait it out a little more to see how the format war shakes out.

Enjoy!

No mounting compatibility.

No, the DV-981HD is still the flagship unit in terms of de-interlacing and scaling. The advantage of the DV-980H is that is supports 1080p upconversion without macroblock enhancement errors like the DV-981HD. This becomes useful for users who are worried about macroblocking errors, such as DLP or plasma users.

Excellent. It seems we finally have a true universal audio/video transport (ignoring the high-def formats of course), and it's available in black! Thank you OPPO!

Chris

The main reason for this is that margins for the DV-981HD are higher than that of the DV-980H. In terms of profits, the DV-981HD is a much more enticing kit.

Beyond that, with my personal experience, the larger the screen, the easier it is to see de-interlacing and scaling properties. For a large screen display, the DV-981HD will show better results than the DV-980H.

OPPO is basically trying to reduce the "I don't see any difference" returns that may occur if they recommend a player which is more subtle.

I've been debating getting either a Sony DVP-NS77H(mediatek) or an Oppo DV-981HD(Faroudja). I have a 60" Sony XBR1. Basically, which chipset would be better for my TV? (fyi - the XBR1 will only accept up to a 1080i signal). Would a mediatek or Faroudja chip set produce a better picture on my tv?

For your display I would recommend using 720p and let your display do half of the upscaling to 1080p.

I personally preferred the look of the DV-981HD on the Sony XBR1, but I have some friends with the XBR1/2 which have used the DV-970HD/DV-980H (beta) and have not complained about the final picture quality.

that's weird, because I use the 1080i setting on my current dvd player. It looks noticably better then the 720p setting. If I did set the DV-981HD to 1080i, would that still use the Faroudja chip to make the picture look better?

USB 2.0 not fast enough? Are you saying it's not fast enough in the Oppo DV-980H implementation or in general? Because in general, I can play VOBs from an external USB2.0 drive just fine on my computer.

So what formats, besides, Divx/Xvid can be played reasonably well from the Oppo USB?

Also, does all the video processing that Oppo does for DVDs also applies for files played via USB?

I found there to be resolution loss at 1080i compared to 720p when using the XBR1. If you are using AVIA, throw down some resolution test patterns. You will notice moiring and false contouring at the 6.5Mhz test pattern and 350+ lines of resolution.

Interesting - and there are no macroblocking issues on the XBR1 when using the DV-981H ?

Since they don't advertise it being an HD Divx player, I'll assume that it can't do higher than 720x480 for divx/xvid.

The buffering for the USB on the DVD player is not good enough for VOB or other high bandwidth intensive media. It is like recording a mini-DVD (DVD encoded on CD media). CDs can't spin fast enough to stream the media, so you will see skipping or dropped frames. This is the same thing with the USB interface.

All processing that applies to disc media is applied to USB media.

Macroblocking is minimal. LCoS technology is far less prone to macroblock enhancement errors than their DLP counterpart.

Chris, I am looking at the comparison / recommendation from the Oppo site and it seems that they do recommend the 980 for 1080p and rear projection systems and any display with a HDMI input. The chart is a bit confusing, but it appears that they do recommend it for screens over 45".

You can see this at the compare link on the product description page.

Unlike the 970, is the 980 capable of 2-2 cadence for PAL playback?

These are guidlines, and probably not rules. These are recommendations, and are again, are generalizations.

PAL 2:2 Cadence is not fully compliant, but it is damned close to being perfect.

No, the 980 cannot do 2-2 cadence. It's listed as such in their comparison chart.

The chart has a line for screens over 45" at 1080i and 720p and only the DV981HD is checked now. Yes, it doesn't limit 1080p by screen size and my point is that I am using it with a 720p projector and 100" screen and think it is fine for that purpose.

I use this player as a dedicated CD/SACD/DVD-A player. Can I expect any improvements over the 970?

970 is pretty darn good.

Here to help and learn. Thanks AVS.

If it is connected via 5.1 analog, I say no. Others may have a different opinion however. I don't have any equipment to do any objective tests but I find the DVD-V performance and HDMI 1.2a are the big upgrades. You might wait until some objective data can be presented regarding audio performance. I have both players and I am with you, the DVD970HD is a great sounding budget CD/SACD/DVD-A player.

The question for those of us who are still stuck with component input HDTVs, is there a possibility that a firmware hack will be available (and how soon) to do 1080i or 1080p via component.. I was more or less sold on the 970, but might as well wait for the 980 if the same capabilities are going to be there (ala 1080i via component) with the added features that the 980 provides..
