Short of building a HTPC, is there a simple way to play ripped DVDs from an external USB hard drive? Can I just plug the HDD into the USB port of a DVD player like the Oppo 980H and access the ripped DVDs directly through the DVD player?

I think the Oppo 980H can do this. I'd give them a call. I've never done it myself.

I read a thread the other day that said the HDD has to be FAT32(4GB limit) and the player only supports 700 files(MTK limit).
There may be a max HDD size as well, better contact Oppo.

You'd want a player HDD enclosure with USB 2.0 also. USB 1.0 is way to slow, at least it is with the Oppo 970H.
