I got Netflix several weeks ago and set it up to run through the NF client on my TiVo Premiere Elite, which is capable of handling NF's highest resolution, 1080 Super HD, which is 1080p. Until a couple of days ago, everything I watched was displayed in 1080 Super HD but over the weekend and again today, most of what I have watched has maxed out at 720 and has never exceeded 1080. Checked my download speeds from Cox Tulsa a couple of times this afternoon and it was 113 Mbps both times, which is about what it has been for some time. Can anybody suggest what might be going on here?

I hate the idea of a wireless-only streaming device; mine will be plugged into my TV less than 5' from the router. Or I might dump my TV Live and plug it into its spot on my HDMI switch.

Uh-oh--no USB power option. Bad mistake, Amazon!
Where do you see the no USB power option. From the 'Included in the box' it says 'USB cable and power adapter'

If really a USB cable + power adapter you could plug into the USB port on a receiver or TV.

I am being very good and have resisted ordering one so far......

I already have a FireTV etc and stopped using my Chromecast some months sgo - but at $19 my resolve may be weakening....

It also quite pointedly says, "Fire TV Stick cannot be powered directly by your HDTV and should be plugged into your wall". Interestingly it does not say "wall socket", but I guess that we can assume . It also says "should" and not "must" so we can try plugging it into USB. Of course, it'll be a while before mine comes (December 11th estimated). They must be selling these things quite rapidly with that offer.

They must have sold many hundreds of thousands if not millions of them today.

Found out now that Netflix 1750 kbps SD encode is H.264. I though it was VC-1.
http://www.lighterra.com/papers/videoencodingh264/
Long write up also 720p at 2350kbps is not using the eyeIO codec which could be the reason why it looked terrible. Also makes me laugh how they think that 240p can still look good.

That paper seems unaware of Netflix's use of eyeIO. It lists 720p bitrates of 2350 and 3600 and a single 1080p bitrate of 4800--the 3600 and 4800 bitrates are pre-eyeIO.

Netflix has two sets of VC-1 encodes with WMA audio using WMDRM for support of "legacy" devices, called CE1 and CE2; the set of encodes used by devices released in the last few years is CE3-DASH, which is all H.264/AVC video with HE-AAC stereo and DD+ surround sound, protected by either MS' PlayReady or Google's Widevine DRM system, depending on the platform. This year's 4K TVs are using their CE4 profile with H.265/HEVC for the 2160p video encodes (they've stated that they'll be encoding all resolutions with HEVC eventually; maybe they already are).

Run out of 4k material in the UK. Netflix only has Breaking Bad and House of Cards so have cancelled subscription. Anything else out there for us Brits? Have the samsung hard drive but very limited video.

Thanks for the tip. I just ordered mine. The official release date says November 19, 2014. My delivery date is January 9, 2015. No big deal as I wasn't even considering getting another streaming device, but @ 19 bucks w/prime free shipping I couldn't pass it up.

Also the Fire TV finally has the updated Netflix app with the new UI which I got after updating the software so the Fire TV dongle will get the update now too. I would have bought it if I did not have the set top box.
