watched it about 2/3 of the way thru and couldn't bring myself to finish it - just seemed too cardboard stiff of a character role, much more so than usual for him

actually, come to think of it, i think your assessment is closer to being the case than my assumption - his performance was "less" than energetic or engaged

When Samuel L is really on his game and has the right part for his "distinctive" style, he's great .. I just felt like in "The Samaritan" he was coasting and collecting a pay check .. I just could not fully engage in the film because he was not fully engaged ..

I saw that RT rating after the Samaritan movie was mentioned on here. Decided to leave it alone last night, and opted to re-watch "In Harm's Way". Best WWII Navy flick I've ever seen. Highly recommend. Otto Preminger was a genius.

After reading your recommendation I tried to watch it. "In Harm's Way is unavailable to stream."

It's available in the Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Brazil Netflix region libraries; perhaps he uses a DNS spoofing service for access to those.

That could be, or maybe he lives in one of those locations.

Edit: Oops, I should have looked at his location before replying.

No, I don't live south of the border, only south Florida. Check my avatar location.

After checking, it was on Amazon Prime streaming that I watched "In Harm's Way" last night. I frequently go back & forth between Netflix & Amazon, my main streaming channels on Roku. My bad, so solly GI.

How did you know I was a GI?
Check my edit!

It would be nice if Netflix streaming had a wish-list. If you search for a title and it's unavailable to stream you could check a "notify me when available" box and they automatically send you a notice by e-mail if it becomes available.

Agree. Search features are are sorely lacking on Netflix, and even worse on Amazon Prime. Can anyone tell me why I sometimes see movies listed twice on Netflix, and even in the same category side-by-side?? When I first saw them, I thought maybe one was a director's cut or an alternate ending or something similar. Nope. Just the exact same movie. What can I say, it bugged me.

i used my best "google fu" before posting this one, and didn't find any mention of it - Magic City on comcast On Demand - well done, basically the background in the gangster control of Miami in the late 50s - i'd put it on level with True Detective in a different sort of way (no occult) but definitely entertaining. Story centers on Ike Evans getting his new Hotel into black ink

only two seasons and few weeks back they announced it wouldn't be renewed for a 3rd

Was a great show IMO, I was so mad when Starz abruptly cancelled it. It ends OK though.

Man, I really liked that show! Bummer City for Magic City.

don't know what svc you guys watch it on - i dubbed it from comcast and S1:E7 only plays like 16-17 minutes of the episodes and stops, going back to the On Demand screen

same with S2: E6, and E2 in S2 is just missing altogether - called comcast to ask em how much would the full episodes + the missing episodes cost? - said they'd put a trouble ticket in

See proof right there is why I hate that Netflix has gone international. Nothing peeves me more off when I see something on Netflix but it is not in the US region. This is why I don't bother to look up screenshots of Netflix UI anymore. No I don't want to do no DNS or VPN spoofing crap.

Exactly. I did that with one movie that was not on Netflix in this stupid region but was on Amazon Prime so I watched it on there.

Okay my bad I see you watched it on Amazon. Yes I sometimes confuse content on both when I switch back and forth between them.
For those with Amazon Prime here is the link.

I see that Lars van Trier's "Nymphomaniac" volumes 1 and 2 have been added.

Why? Lots of property is tied up in exclusivity deals in the US which don't exist in other countries so Netflix is able to license those properties there but not here yet. Also I imagine that the list of things offered to them by content providers differs from location to location.

I watched "Nymphomanica: Volume 1" last night. It's not probably what folks will expect and is quite humorous. Also watched "Goodbye World" which is a little different apocalyptic movie more about some folks who flee to the Northern California woods after society collapses. More about their human drama than a thriller. Kerry Bishe from "Halt and Catch Fire" appears in it.

Here is some good Ellis Island early 20th century period tragic cinema, touched a special note with me as an immigrant to this country married to a Pole, I rated it 5 stars:

I'll have to check it out - my father first came here as a prisoner of war (WWII)
then went back and got mom and they came thru Ellis Island

PS - watched it and for me anyway, it was kind of a let down - kept expecting the pace to pickup some and it never did
larryccf's Avatar larryccf 11:23 AM 08-12-2014
started to watch Band of Brothers on netflix / hbo and not what i expected. Wasn't there a 2 or 3 part series on WWII in the late 90s early 2000, each episode being 2-3 hours in length - the BOB netflix has is a 10 part series, one hour each with David Schwimmer and it's not the one i remember

dyslexia and CRS are a hell of dangerous combo

Unless you're renting the dvds, you're actually watching BoB on Amazon Instant.

Schwimmer is credited as appearing in 3 episodes on this Wiki page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Band_of..._miniseries%29

There was a companion series that followed BoB, called ''The Pacific''. Perhaps this is what you're recalling?

larryccf's Avatar larryccf 02:16 PM 08-12-2014
Nope, i'm aware of the pacific and now hanks and spielberg are coming out with one based on the air war

but the one i remember was 2-3 hour long episodes and over a couple of nights, and a lot grittier. i've only watched the first two episodes of this one with Schwimmer but it doesn't look anything as real as the other one.

only reason i watched it the first time, my atty (now passed away) told me he was going to watch it as it was about his division in the 2nd war (iirc the 8th)

i'll research WWII movies and see what hits me
cajieboy's Avatar cajieboy 01:03 AM 08-13-2014
I liked Band of Brothers, and even got their special tin boxed-set somewhere around the house. It's a story of the 101st Division, which I believe are based in Clarksville, TN. The first few episodes involving Schwimmer were the training camp episodes and not too exciting. Keep watching as the story gets more involved and the events heat-up. BTW, this is a true story w/recreations of actual events, people, etc.
