I know what you mean. Lots of folks don't like a subtitled movie. I think they are missing out on a lot of great foreign flicks. When I first watched "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", I inadvertently ordered the original Swedish version with foreign actors & subtitles. Later, I rented the the newer English version of Dragon Tattoo with Daniel Craig in the male lead. I like Daniel Craig, but still I have to say that I liked the original Swedish version of the movie better.

I thought that both versions were good; the English version was pretty faithful to the Swedish. It brought a good story to people who abhor subtitles.

Don't know if it will be a gem or not, but there's a new Netflix series, Marco Polo:

Quote:
"Marco Polo" is an epic adventure that follows the early years of the famous explorer as he travels the exotic Silk Road to the great Kublai Khan’s court. But Marco soon finds that navigating the Khan’s world of greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry will be his greatest challenge yet, even as he becomes a trusted companion to the Khan in his violent quest to become the Emperor of the World.

Thus far, there is only a trailer. Fairly cool looking historical costume drama. The first season goes up on December 12th; I wonder if it will include 4K encodes (EDIT: it will be a 4K title according to this blog post).

I watched "Heatstroke" the other night and it's not bad .. for the longest time, I sat there racking my brain on who was playing the daughter .. until finally it dawned on me it was Maisie Williams / Arya Stark .. at any rate, it's worth a watch, even though it's a basic plot we've seen many times ..

It's been a show that I've always thought I'd like, but with the wealth of worthwhile programming these days, it always got shuffled to the end of the list .. time is so limiting ..

Pretty much the only live tv in this house is sports. We stay about 6-8 weeks behind on DVR stuff, so its nice having large HDD's and Netflix streaming. I dont ever feel pressured to watch something, just get to it when I can.

Common usage is fine - language develops over time - old English (Chaucer), goes to Tudor (Shakespeare) to the modern forks UK, American, Australian, Canadian etc....

However at no point does 2160P reach 4000 of anything.

We are giving in to the TV manufacturers (false) marketing hype when we repeat 4k.

UltraHD and 2160P describes the format well...

You are normally very perceptive and accurate with your posts on formats and resolutions

And you will read me using 2160 res a lot. But 3840 is 96% of 4000, just 160 pixels short, and it's reasonable to round up for the sake of brevity. The terms "4K TV" and "4K video" are ubiquitously used to describe 2160 res and no amount of you and me using the proper term is going to change that. It's just so much snappier for marketing copy than "3.84K" or "2160p".

Manufacturers commonly round storage drive capacities up or down to the nearest 10 GB or 10 MB, etc. It looks so much better to say 500 GB drives than 489 GB or 515 GB.

Consider it a warning not a spoiler. You would have seen similar warnings on the Netflix reviews for it.

Westly-C, it's argued in the reviews and on IMDB that's not the point of the movie anyway. I would give it 2.5 stars but Netflix doesn't have that and 3 stars means "I liked it" whereas on Amazon 3 stars means "it was okay". I figure if Netflix changed it to "it was okay" that Amazon would sue.

So if I send you a credit of $4000 but you only get $3840 (just $160 short) you will be fine?

I get the need for a snappy marketing label - but why not 2160P? 1080P worked well and clearly 2160P is bigger (we marketing guys love bigger )

The reason I get upset is that Digital Cinemas have have used the the term 2K and then 4K for years.

Digital Cinema 2K is much superior to 1080P (even 1080P Blu-Ray will never match 2K Digital Cinema) and Digital Cinema 4K is much superior to the current 2160P and the difference is much more (color gamut and depths) than the marginal increment in horizontal resolution.

Now we have the consumer companies marketing '4K' and people think it will be equivalent to the '4K Digital Cinema' they see in theaters.
