Thread rolled back to the most recent on-topic post. Some legit posts may have been lost in the rollback, but I don't think so. Stay on topic, please.

I finished Sense8 last night and gave it 5 stars. There's a lot of info as to why things were happening in the last two episodes.

I learned something interesting today on vox.com Netflix does not own their original series. They're owned by the respective studios that produced them. The Netflix originals are more accurately Netflix exclusives -- for now. Conceivably in the future the shows can expire like all their other content.

I was wondering where they were getting all the money to produce all these shows and apparently they are not. They're just licensing them.

don't know if it means much except to people who own Netflix stocks

Yep.

And they have been very smart in what they have chosen. For the cost, Less than HBO/month, I am getting a great stable of originals.

This Motley Fool piece claims that Netflix is a production partner for their "originals", paying millions per episode to gain four year exclusivity. Whether or not Netflix partakes in post exclusivity licensing profits is not stated.

This is really not a new concept exclusive to NF .. and, at the end of the day, if and when a re-negotiation becomes necessary, I feel safe in saying Hastings will be happy to come to the table and work with any production company in order to extend exclusivity .. at least on shows he deems worthy enough to extend .. and, for all I know, NF may very well have the right of first refusal ...

The concept seems to be working well for NF .. continued subscriber growth, further expansion into other markets, etc .. and a brand that has pretty much become ubiquitous ..

Netflix doesn't own any of it's own shows and it's a big weakness.

I read the piece earlier today .. like many headlines, it's a bit misleading .. once you dig into the article and get to the last 1/3rd or so ..

Business deals for content often work that way. Notice the ABC Studio logo on "Daredevil" and then you get the parade of production companies. When Netflix bargained with Comcast for hands off their streaming they probably negotiated some rights to NBC/Universal properties too. I sure would have put that on the table.

Hulu+ has their "originals" but they are really "exclusives" and some more recently with US networks like FOX and ABC. Those are for rights to keep the full series available like "American Crime" and "Empire." Then there are the UK exports. Seems about the only "original" is "Deadbeat" which has been renewed for a third season. But it is relatively low budget and I also believe partly a Canadian network deal.

They could have left the 'weakness' part out of the title. Less profitable may be a better choice of words, but that's still debatable at this time, since Netflix is still in it's infancy when it comes to providing it's own programming. Unlike HBO, Netflix does not currently create it's own content. HBO films was established back in the 1980's under the Time-Life (now Time-Warner) umbrella. The advantage of creating their own productions was not just about profitability, but it allowed them to have greater control over their content. I wouldn't be surprise to see films produce directly by Netflix in the future, so hold on to that stock Uncle Willy!

Force Majeure

Watched Force Majeure
Liked it quite a bit - may not be for everyone.
I couldn't help but see some homage to Kubrick's direction in The Shining - although it's not a horror flick.

FWIW, I noticed that the Flixster app let's you filter for Netflix streaming which is a nice way to find well liked movies.

Thanks,

Mitch

Syfy's "Ascension", added June 16 to streaming in the US.
Equally ambitious-and outrageous, you make the call, this limited run series was edited and presented as a miniseries back in December. The producers hoped it would launch a weekly run, but poor reviews despite fair rating led Syfy to not ordering any kind of follow up.

I tried watching this one because I like sci-fi, but the premise was just too hard for me to believe. I didn't stick around long enough to hear the explanations as to how it was possible to launch a self contained city-size space ship in 1963. That must have been a whopper.

"Deadman" - Johnny Depp: 1996

A most unusual western, directed by Jim Jarmusch, music by Neil Young, one of Robert Mitchum's last film appearances, shot in black & white, spellbinding & mesmerizing.

It wasn't a great series, but you missed the punch-line. You should watch another episode or two .
