All of George Carlin's specials will be available on 12/31, it looks like a Carlin marathon this weekend. On 1/1 about 300 hit films will be available including: Goodfellas, Blazing Saddles and The Wizard of Oz.

I just hope they can renew X Files and 24 when they expire in April because i have not gotten around to them yet.

There's a lot of discussion in the PS3 forum that the update we got to the discless option has made quality jump up and down while watching and the time counter is all screwy. Not sure why they did an update that made the thing effectively worse then what we had. There was nothing noticably wrong with the initial roll out.

I watched "Little Chenier: A Cajun Story" last night. A very good look at cajun bayou life. No fake over the top action, just real people in real situations, and pretty authentic. Filming on this wrapped less than a month before the entire area was destroyed by Hurricane Rita, and the end credits have some staggering before-and-after pictures. It is believed that this is the only footage of the Little Chenier area that exists.
BTW: I love this thread as I'm new to Netflix as of last week...with the suggestions given here it'll be a while before I watch regular TV.

luckily I watched 24 live from Season 4 on, so I've already seen the whole thing - and I'm on Season 7 of X-Files. I want Buffy renewed though, since S4-7 are widescreen versions not available elsewhere and I like Buffy at my fingertips

Near 1/3rd of the 250 does not seem bad to me .. for $8 bucks a month

While browsing through the "Newly Added" stuff (scanning for titles to add to my "5.1/1080p" list), I ran across Angel's Dance, a dark comedy starring James Belushi and Sheryl Lee. It concerns a contractor (Belushi) hired by the mob to train a young guy to be a hit man. For his training project, they pick a name at random from the phone book and come up with Angel (Lee), a solitary, somewhat disturbed young woman who works as a mortician. The project turns out not to be as easy as they'd hoped .

I've seen this film a couple of times and I really like it. Unfortunately not HD.

I noticed most of the WI "new releases" this week are 90's movies like "Angel's Dance". I wonder what kind of deal precipitated that? I put a few in my queue.

I also noticed a lot of old B&W films. Who knows.

Sheryl Lee (Angel's Dance) had her 15 minutes of fame 20 years ago, with her sexually charged role as Laura Palmer in David Lynch's bizarre Twin Peaks series. I recall a scene where, sitting at a bar, she take a marischino cherry in her mouth and ties a knot in its stem with her tongue, demonstrating lingual dexterity .

I remember Sheryl Ann Fenn doing that in Twin Peaks, she's another of the many very good looking woman on that show, although my favorite was always Mädchen Amick with Joan Chen a very close second.

You're right--it was Sherilyn Fenn's character Audrey Horne. Sorry. Interesting that a lot of them were dark haired young women with similar features (Lara Flynn Boyle was another).

btw, any speculation as to why they still add new titles that aren't HD? For example, Shutter Island is not HD! Could this be part of their licensing deal?

I think I missed at least the first half of S4 of The IT Crowd on cable. I love the show. But it will have to wait as I'm still on a Battlestar Gallactaca marathon and have a long way to go

Beer Wars - Interesting documentary about the beer industry in America. Follows a couple of smaller brewers and talks about trying to compete in an industry dominated by A-B. Worth a watch.

Cocaine Cowboys -- I think this one was mentioned earlier in this thread, but a documentary detailing Miami in the late 70s and early 80s and the violence that surrounded the cocaine trafficking. Interesting watch.

NF does a poor job promoting big movies recently added to IW. instantwatcher.com does a much better job.

Mackenna's Gold

Watched this over the weekend. An okay western about gold lust but worth a watch, with Gregory Peck leading; however, the photography is stunning. This was easily the nicest HD picture I've seen yet on Netflix.

Finally got a chance to watch The Descent 2. Pretty scary movie. I was really impressed with the quality of the video as the dark scenes looked very good. I don't understand the inconsistent with the quality of the video. If only all movies looked this good.

I've been watching the BBC comedy series "Saxondale" about an aging ex rock roadie now in business as a pest exterminator. The first episode was a little slow to get off the ground but I got hooked by the third and am now starting the second season.

I'm going to check that out. The great thing about BBC series is they are short and only a few episodes for each season.

Kitchen Stories (2003)

In the 1950s a Swedish study found the average housewife walks the distance from Stockholm to Congo a year in the kitchen. Kitchen Stories is a fictionalized account of the Home Research Institute (HMI) sending observers to rural Norway to perform a similar study on single men. The obserers aren't supposed to interact with the men in any way, but passively watch and take notes on their subjects while perched on giant HMI-supplied chairs. They live in small HMI trailers parked outside the subjects' homes. The Norwegian drama/comedy is quiet and slow-paced, but filled with subtle (and often visual) laughs as a friendship slowly develops. Good stuff. 4/5
