I think that the Roku 3 does a good job of streaming Netflix and Amazon. One significant consideration is that a Roku 3 will consume 3.5W whereas the PS3 will consume 85W or more (twice that by the original models). I never use my game consoles for media playing.

I would not have said this last year but the Fire TV is great for Netflix. Most of the time it actually starts out in 1080p unlike other devices which start out like mud. Even the ATV3 only starts out in 480p but does ramp up in 10 seconds but I don't care. I want HD playback from the beginning. The only issues I have is sometimes the video freezes for a few seconds however since the latest Fire TV updates that added a boatload of new features update it has not done that anymore.

EarthLink Extreme powered by Time Warner Cable Brooklyn.
ASUS RT-N66W Router 374.43 (Merlin) using OpenDNS.
Toshiba 39L2300U (My Bedroom) - Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV 3, Google Chromecast, Sony PS4.
Toshiba 32RV530U (Living Room) - Amazon Fire TV, Sony PS3 Slim.
