I've complained about this to NetFlix two years ago and being in such a competitive space (rentals, movie streaming, etc.) I am just floored they've done nothing with their search.

Why is their search so lacking in features? Why isn't there at least some sort of advance search? Examples of searches I want to run:

Show me movies released in past 90 days that are rated PG-13 or lower and have a rating of 3 stars or higher and are currently available for rental.

Show me all movies that can be streamed - and which ones can be streamed in HD (assuming connection speed is fast enough.)

Show me all movies that can be rented in Blu-Ray format.

The database info is there. It seems they are almost purposely not providing a way to do this. Maybe for fear competitors can get a handle on how big of a library they have?

Is there any way to get a list of Netflix's HD movies they are streaming?

Thanks. Now if only they had the option to increase the number of listings per page so I didn't have to wade through 65 pages.

Again, I am flabbergasted at the lack of features as far as NetFlix in some sort of Advanced Search. But the fact they don't even give any e-mail addresses for you to send your suggestions to is indicative they are probably operating on shoestring budgets for customer service AND development. There's no other way they can keep their prices so low.

Actually I think they use the KISS approach in many ways. Appears to be the company's mantra. Like not making new (new) releases listable... it's better you can't see so you can't complain they aren't available yet.

www.feedfliks.com does allow you to filter by HD as part of your search and a few other parameters. And www.instantwatcher.com can do MPAA rating as part of its filter.

I use instantwatcher, which allows all kinds of searching. Unfortunately you can't search by 5.1 titles. I emailed him and he said if enough people request it, he'll add it (although I'm not sure if that's included as part of the API though). I am sure when 5.1 gets released to other devices, he'll add it regardless (assuming again it's included in the API)

Although it would be nice if Netflix would just upgrade their search....I don't know why they rely so heavily on third party sites to supply this stuff (they obviously supply the API, so you would think they'd want to do something with it)

What is the link to bring up ALL streaming movies HD or otherwise. On Netflix it only lets you do it by genre as far as I can tell.

LOL. As far as streaming goes, I can hardly keep up with the couple hundred suggestions Netflix keeps putting up on my Roku screen. Every time I think about searching for something I spot something else I want to check out. Sometimes I will search for a specific title but that's about it. I'm more often than not watching stuff that I didn't even know existed, and that's what makes it so much fun.

I totally agree with you. For movie lovers, this is really a great way to go. As I've said before, I've been a movie fanatic for over 45 years and even with the thousands of films I've seen I still maintain over 100 movies in both my ques. I'm always stumbling across new and interesting films as you do. Also if you want to complicate it even further there are all kinds of film anthologies like Video Hound's Independent Film Guide or The Phantom's Ultimate Video Guide or Guide for the Film Fanatic to name a few that offer short, concise synopsis' of thousands of films that could help with making choices. Heck metacritic.com is a great place to find great films. They list the top 100 best rated films of all time, the top 100 worst rated films plus they list all the award winning films from just about any critic's organization or societies from the year 2000 up till now. It's a great site to find hidden gems.

I ordered a Roku XDS but think I will return it without even using it. the reason is my Panasonic Blu-Ray in the bedroom is on the fritz so I need a new BD player. I think the better solution for me is to just spend the extra $70 and get an LG BD570 Blu-Ray Player with built-in wi-fi and Netflix app. I browsed the Amazon VOD and it is EXPENSIVE like Comcast. My wife is watching the Glee series (and other movies and series) on BD. She can typically watch at least 4 or 5 discs a month. Our Netflix is about $20/month. To watch those 4 or 5 Glee discs via Amazon VOD, it is like $22X4 or 5 = $88-$110! That's insane! Amazon does have a lot of movies that Netflix doesn't but are we going to pay $3 to watch them each - rarely if at all unless they start a subscription service like Netflix.

Our phone system is 5ghz so the 5ghz capability of the XDS is not a benefit. The BD570 also has DLNA streaming so I can watch movies off my media server. I'm sure the ROKU is a much better device for streaming media overall, but in searching the Netflix Streaming database, their coverage is still pretty skimpy so we will need to play BDs quite often for another year. I like the idea of having only one device. We don't need much other than Netflix on the BD player. DLNA is just a bonus. Anything else is also just a bonus.

Much of the VOD content from any provider is more expensive than rental .. the model used I believe is really based on the convienience and apparently many use VOD from one provider or another .. regardless of the cost .. I guess the immediate factor as well as not having to leave the recliner must play in ..

On your original post, Netflix really is setup to encourage browsing and discovery, more than anything else .. at least IMO .. or to look for a specific title .. since most folks have a pretty good idea of what they want to watch .. and HD streams on library titles change constantly it seems to me .. one day it's available in HD, next day it's not or disappears altogether ..

Consultant, I hope you know that the LG BD570's Netflix app does not have a search function. I don't want to discourage you from the BD570 (I own one), but the Roku is only one of two pieces of electronic gear I've bought in the last 20 years that simply works exactly as advertised. Nothing else has even come close.

Have to agree, those little Roku boxes are pretty amazing. Have three and never a problem.

Consultant, this latest post on the Netflix blog addresses your question pretty directly:

Having worked in internet application development for the last 15 years I can tell you that "feature rich" does not always lead to smiling customers. The 80/20 rule is something that generally holds true in more instances that you might imagine and is definitely true when it comes to the complexity of the user experience. If it does not provide value to 80% of your customer for 80% of what they do, etc., then you need to be very careful that it does not end up being counter productive.

Customer satisfaction and utility follows a bell curve. There is a sweet spot where value meets usability and it can fall off dramatically when functionality crosses a threshold of complexity.

As an aside take a look at Google. A text entry box and a button. Yes, you can get advanced search options but they hide them and only grudgingly reveal them to you in stages.

I had a client years ago who was one of the largest retailers on the internet. They became enamoured with the idea of making it possible for customers to split an order and send it to two different addresses and insisted on developing it despite many admonitions against it. It ended up sucking up a huge amount of effort and was only used by less than .5% of customers during the holiday season. It was a customer service quagmire and they ultimately removed the functionality.

You can be sure that Netflix is not skimping on development of their online product just because they don't have what YOU want.

Uhh, the point is, most prominent sites, video rental or otherwise, have better search capabilities than Netflix.

Per your example, Google makes the Advanced Search obscure, but Google at least HAS IT. The point is that Netflix doesn't even give customers even an option to use an advance search even an obscure one.

I'm pretty sure there isn't. I use Rokus and there has never been an HD category when I've opened Netflix. Not completely sure about how the PS3 or others units are configured. You have to go on the computer and into your que and under "genres" is an HD setting that lists all their HD films. Instantwatcher.com also has a high definition category. But I'm sure you already knew this.
