And it now appears they fixed the HBO Westworld access issues.

I was impressed with the AQ and PQ for the Quarry finale, glad Amazon has all 4 premium services now.

The Roku HBO Now app supports 5.1. The FireTV HBO Now app does not.

I'm not sure if that applies to the question, but it appears we have one vote for and one vote against.

As far as the video services app, you can now add to Amazon Prime in your account, and access series thru your Amazon watchlist, Max and HBO are 5.1 DD+ on my Roku Ultra.

Its the AMAZON app, why do you think the Roku Amazon app would support 5.1+ from HBO and Max through Amazon, and not the Fire TV Amazon app?

Because exactly that has happened in the past. Amazon apps are different for different devices, just as others are.

The below post has some good info,

Devices that do NOT stream HBO NOW 5.1 (stereo only)

I haven't tried HBO through the Prime Video service but the FTVs I have(box/stick) won't do 5.1 with the stand-alone HBO Now, at least not any configuration I've tried. The FTV's audio settings are somewhat confusing, there are 4 different settings for HDMI audio which I've not seen before. In any case, none of them will output 5.1 from HBO Now. HBO Go on the other hand will do DD+ 5.1 on the FTV.

By the way, the FTV got a new UI today, at least mine did, but still no 5.1 audio for HBO Now.

Easy solution, to add HBO or Max to your Prime membership as a video sub, you get 30 days free. Add it and check it.

All I know is using it thru the Amazon app on the Roku via my Amazon watchlist is far superior to HBO Now App or Sling TV VOD.

Kind of what I expected. AFAIK the Roku is the only STB that does 5.1 for HBONow.

FWIW my FTV box hasn't updated since August.

What I cant figure is, the HBO Now $15/month app PQ is worse than the video sub thru Amazon, even worse than Sling VOD. You would figure HBO would offer the best AQ and PQ thru their own app.

I read something the other day that said HBO is looking to get out of their arrangement with BAM Tech as their backend provider for their streaming service, it may or may not have something to do with the quality.

Ah, interesting.

I've been impressed with the 1080p HD Amazon PQ for tv shows. And it is basically the same price, or cheaper in some instances, to get Starz, Max, HBO and Showtime, so why pay the same or more for less quality.

No PQ issues with HBO GO. Looks great on my Roku 3600r. Not sure why HBO NOW wouldn't be the same. On the other hand, I've been watching Amazon's Goliath and the picture looks a bit dark and grainy.

Its not that it is bad, but I can see compression noise on Westworld in facees, etc.., that are not there on Sling's VOD version, or the Vue VOD version.

The Amazon video services version trumps them all.

As with most content on HBO GO, there is no visible noise or compression artifacts, other then some occasional minor banding. Obviously, they are providing better service to HBO carrier subscribers.

My vote FOR 5.1 on HBO Now is based on the app on my Roku. I didn't consider that other devices might have different audio capabilities for HBO Now. So I am revising my response: HBO Now has 5.1 audio capability on Roku devices.

Is Amazon allowing for purchase of UHD new releases yet, like Sully or Suicide Squad (streaming)? Just curious, Vudu UHD looks great but has been slow to hit devices and lacks titles.

I figured UHD new release streaming would be full bore by now.

There was a whole slew of UHD titles recently added, but my impression was that they are up-scales. You'll find that UHD category in the Movies section on the FTV. They are available for rent or buy, but you won't like the prices.

The lure of free Prime programming wears off pretty fast. If Amazon was smart they would offer Prime subscribers a discount on their non-Prime offerings.

Amazon needs to increase the output of its original series, I keep seeing new ones on Netflix all the time and apparently Netflix will develop over 70 this coming year. Off the top of my head, I can really only think of maybe 10 or so Amazon originals.

I don't seem to be buying as much from them lately - the deals aren't as good as they used to be. Prime video is part of the draw, but it seems to me they throw way too much of my subscription fee away on grossly overpriced original programming instead of just giving me free or discounted access to a better selection of more proven content...

Your fee for membership to Prime supports tons more than Prime Instant Video. Foremost, the no-additional-cost 2 day shipping on a large selection of items, which was all that Prime was for 6 years before they introduced Prime Instant Video (February 2005 through February 2011). Now there's a plethora of other services available only to Prime members which you can see here. If they took all that away and went back to being just 2-day shipping (and went back to their original price) I'd still be a member. For a long time Amazon would protest that they weren't in competition with Netflix and that the Prime Instant Video service was an inducement for people to join Prime which might result in their making more orders for physical merchandise due to the shipping (I run into items all the time that someone else has a better price for, but they want enough for shipping that it becomes more expensive than Amazon). I don't know what their tune is about PIV now; they now have a month-to-month Prime Video only subscription which costs $8.99/month (more by the end of the year than the full Prime subscription).

Here in San Diego we get pretty much all of the benefits; my aunt in St. Louis, not so much. One of my favorite recent additions is Prime Now Restaurants. I can order food delivered from (currently) 73 different restaurants featuring a large variety of cuisines, with no delivery charge (there's a $20 minimum and they add a $5 tip for the driver, which you can adjust). I've never been able to get food delivered from anything but pizza places and the occasional Chinese restaurant; now I can get almost anything . They deliver from much farther than a restaurant's own delivery area (if it delivers) since the driver doesn't have to return to that restaurant. It's like Uber for restaurant food .

EDIT: I stumbled up this training video for restaurants who sign up for Prime Now Restaurants. I wonder if they provide them with the Kindle used.

Same here--I think that there's a minimum $35 of eligible items to get same-day or 2 hour. They have their own fleet of delivery vans which I think was created for Prime Fresh grocery delivery.
