As drcos said, Season 1 of The Expanse is available on Amazon Prime in UHD but lacks HDR. To my eyes Amazon's UHD version looked only marginally better than its 1080p version upconverted to 2160p. I bought the 1080p BDs of Season 1 and they looked just as good to my eyes as the UHD version on Amazon had. Better yet, the BDs have lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio.

It's fairly common to read tech bloggers stating that a 4K stream has PQ as good as the BD. There's only so much that you can expect from a sub 20 Mbps stream.

No, you can get quality encodes with lower bitrates with HEVC and VP9 and those keep improving. Many of the early 4K offerings were h264 with high bitrates for compatibility. YouTube just dropped h264 for 4K and will be VP9 only. Our eyes are getting spoiled with 4K though.

YouTube has been VP9 for 4K since they added 4K, I thought. They suggest submission of 4K video at some very high bit rates: 35-45 Mbps for 24, 25 and 30 fps; 53-68 Mbps for 48, 50 and 60 fps. It's unclear that they support submission in H.265/HEVC or even VP9, so those high rates may be to compensate for lower efficiency codecs.

My understanding is that their adoption of open source VP9 is due to a desire to not pay licensing fees for HEVC. In order to trancode submissions they'd no doubt have to license it.

Is there pro equipment which supports recording and editing in VP9?

I believe that UHD is 4k. Some of the other UHD shows they have are in fact HDR (The Man in the High Castle looks outstanding).
But the 'HDR' indication did not come on when I watched the last two episodes of S1 (The Expanse) leading me to think it's not. I could be mistaken.

I'll stop ripping my BDs when I can put them in and watch the movie without trailers, warnings, cutesy menus...

Yes, UHD is 4K. I just checked my Amazon, and I don't see The Expanse in UHD. Checked both Included with Prime and paid UHD TV. I watched the first 5 minutes or so of the first episode, but it was just 1080p. (Ive seen most of the other UHD stuff, and it usually goes UHD in the first minute or so). Where are you seeing it in 4k? I'm watching through my Samsung app.

I too did not think the Expanse S01 was in UHD, and to me the CGI in the show looked really bad. Maybe b/c others are watching it in 4K and have better experience with it. I will try and find it in the UHD section tonite.

They want 4K submissions in h264 but they encode the 4K to VP9. I could try to to submit a VP9 or HEVC clip to see if it gets rejected. They like h264 because it decodes easier. They also prefer that the file have faststart where the index is at the front of the file than at the end otherwise they have to wait until the full file is uploaded before they can start encoding.

They have stopped supporting h264 for 4K on browsers which means the Safari users are out of luck until Apple swallows their pride and adds VP9.

"4K" and "UHD" are confusing designations. UHD refers to 4K 3840x2160 resolution but 4K can be confused with "cinema 4K" which is actually 4K wide or 4096 pixels.

Real weird thing is the "stats for nerds" where it looks like a different programmer does them for each app.

Aren't standards fun!

You'll only see the UHD versions on devices whose Amazon apps support 4K. TiVo Bolt and Xbox One S are 4K-capable, but their Amazon apps do not support 4K video yet (the apps on my Roku Premiere+ and television do).

If you've placed 4K versions in your Watchlist on devices whose AIV apps support 4K, the UHD label may be visible on other devices whose apps don't feature 4K but if you play them you won't see the 4K encodes.

Well it may have just changed things. I just checked the UHD/HDR-capable Amazon apps on 3 devices and a Sony TV, and none of them currently has "The Expanse" available in UHD. All of the Prime content in my Watchlist is displaying the appropriate UHD and/or HDR icons so it's just this particular show. Both season 1 and 2 are only currently showing as being available in HD.

That link was the only means I found to get me to the UHD, no HDR, version of The Expanse. Unlike Amazon's other UHD offerings, for some reason The Expanse isn't included in the graphics of shows collected in the Ultra HD section. It's screwy but that's the way it was the last time I checked and assume still is.

That worked for me as well. Thanks for the link Cannon. Had to go to amazon.com add it to my watch list and it showed up. What is up with that Amazon? What else am I missing in 4k? The included with prime movie collection just bites the big one. Aside from the documentaries, everything is 3 stars or less. Looks like I may have to search things out a bit.

I checked the UHD section last night and indeed this show is Not in the list. Perhaps b/c this is UHD in Dolby Vision or something and I only have HDR10 TV? The link provided does not have the UHD mark on the corner either but still I added it to my watchlist, will see if it works tonight.

That is strange. The UHD thing was in the corner when I added to my watch list. And when I checked amazon on my set, it was there as well (haven't checked since this morning).

edit: Just checked The Expanse on my amazon prime on my Samsung, and it still has the UHD flag. Not sure why that link changed from a UHD version to an HD one (it said UHD this morning). Hopefully the UHD version is still out there for others.

It's easy to become jaded, isn't it? Since I got a UHD HDR video and 7.1.4 Atmos/DTS:X audio capable setup, I have found myself talking about" just UHD, no HDR" and "just DTS-HD MA 5.1, no Atmos." Yikes, how soon we forget the bad old days!

Kids these days have it so easy. I remember walking up hill in the snow with no shoes just to play my N64 on my 32" tube TV. And we only had 75 channels to choose from! To make things even worse, we had to order our netfilix movies through the mail!

But I do tend to watch 4k content because it's 4k. And when I said "just 1080p" I really just meant that it wasn't UHD because someone else got it in 4k (but I did finally get it in 4k, and it does look nice). Still need to upgrade my audio. I have 7 channels, but the amp really only handles 5.1 (a denon 3803). As soon as I have a need to another HDMI input, I will have to break down and get a new amp (bought it originally to handle multiple component inputs for my RPTV).

You had it real easy. I remember when we had just one channel with all three networks and snow was not only outside but sometimes on the TV.

Yup, 4K is spoiling us!

This brings back a fond memory .. back in the late 1940's, early 1950's. I was the "Designated Antenna Repositioner" in our Household .. there was not much need then for a "Designated Channel Changer", nor much need for a Remote ..

Watched the pilot episode of "Budding Prospects" last night and had quite a few belly laughs along the way - based on a T.C.Boyle novel and hoping that it gets picked up for a full season - need to go vote now at Amazon to show my support! I should add that it's directed by Terry Zwigoff - think "Bad Santa"

I'm somewhat intrigued by it, too. Unfortunately, since it's a serialized half-hour comedy, the pilot doesn't really tell you much. From what I read about the book, the main part of the story doesn't happen until they get to the farm and deal with their neighbors and police. In the comments, I did mention I hope Amazon takes a gamble on it.

Otherwise, as far as the pilots go, the only one I really want to see is "Oasis". Looks like some good, epic SciFi, with elements from many books and series. Got bored with that Mrs. Maizel thing, and the cartoon was just too crass. Still haven't gotten around to Master Legend.

Im not a fan of Amazons pilot procedure (watch pilot, rate, wait a year to watch again after I forgot what the pilot was about) and don't have the time. Ill just wait till they order a full season and release them.

Watched Budding as well, and I thought it was so, so. I haven't rated it yet, but I am interested to see where they can go with it. I really like Will Sasso and it makes a good stoner. I am a huge sci-fi fan, so I will have to check out Oasis (although the description didn't excite me all that much).

As far as the procedure for new series, I like the fact that they allow you vote on things, but it is quite a long time before it can come on-line. Looking forward to The Last Tycoon as well as The Tick, but it's been forever since they were first introduced.

If you like animation they added the Flash Gordon animated series from the late '70s. I don't even think it's available on DVD in the US yet.

XBOX Live: Wagmman
PSN: Wagg
BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

My Second Life character looks and acts exactly like me except he can fly.
