Likewise HBO Go is DD 5.1 (not DD+) on my Apple TV 3rd Generation.

Cool, thank you. Interesting that it only mentions DD+ on the site.  Since I have a chromecast I was hoping to find someone who was able to get that to work in 5.1 but the $50 Roku Stick could be an option.

Chromecast is only 2.0DD for HBO GO. Only thing is it's one of the few devices that works with Comcast and HBO GO (if you have that combo).
