It seems Netflix is having issues with some devices. My WDTV connected, but I cannot play anything.

Yep. Unable to connect since around 3pm yesterday, just checked again and nothing. This has been getting ridiculous lately.

Wonder when they're going to send my partial monthly refund... yea, right! hahaha

I was going to watch Christmas Vacation last night and could not connect.

Watched Fox news Chicago this morning and They had a blurb on it Saying Netflix went down for a few hours yesterday and that Netflix blames Amazon. Something about Amazons cloud.

Just checked looks good this morning.

It's ironic that Netflix is going to start monthly rankings of ISP's when the problem clearly lies with their own infrastructure - or should I say a lack of one.

http://blog.netflix.com/2012/12/november-isp-rankings-for-usa.html

For a company that is continually putting more of its eggs in the streaming basket I find it strange that they still depend so much on other companies for their CDN.

And when something goes wrong the finger pointing starts.

Aren't they working on their own CDN?

That said you are correct that depending on amazon like this is not a good idea.... they really need to fast track their own system.

I guess this couldn't have to do with more people getting Netflix enabled devices for the holidays and overloading demand? After all the cable and TV networks went on hiatus so they could pay the execs big bonuses so nothing there to watch. biggrin.gif

What was the point of even adding that movie as it is already expiring January 1st. Wow you only stream it for 14 days then don't even bother with it. Also there were two more Christmas movies that expired on Christmas day that I wanted to watch.
As I say I use Netflix for TV series but for movies I rather own the BluRay as I know I don't have to worry that is there one day and gone the next. Pathetic.

Probably more the result of stupid film distributors than Netflix. IOW, someone who doesn't know what they are doing trying to appear that they know what they are doing so they can collect their yearly bonus. It's also known as "the typical American executive." wink.gif

I know that is what bugs me about content from Warner Bros that never stays long on Netflix.

Another data point:

Verizon FiOS customers in Pittsburgh were also affected. I tried to watch on a Mac, iPad, ATV3 and LG670 player but all were affected. Sometimes an outage only affects one class of devices but this seemed to affect all classes.

On the PC, buffering feedback would get to 7% and then hang.

I wonder if the Amazon cloud was used for actual data (I thought that is what the CDN's are for), or just for recordkeeping-type data (authorization, keeping track of where you are in case you stop, etc...)

Amazon hosts their website and everything needed to start the stream. The streams themselves aren't hosted by Amazon so if you already had started a movie you probably would have been able to finish it.

Amazon is the major CDN for Netflix. Not sure what percentage others (Akamai, Limelight, etc.) may be providing. Netflix is building their own CDN called Open Connect, at this time it is doing about 5% for them.

Generally, I was thinking the CDN streamed the actual video, but the Amazon 'cloud' was keeping track of where you are in the film, what you are authorized to view, your account info, etc....

I had rebuffering issues again last night on Netflix so I went to Comcast and found a few movies on Showtime I hadn't seen. At least I had 1080i and 5.1 audio. I'm betting that Netflix is cautiously building out and so during holidays you are going to see such problems as there is more demand.

I just noticed today that some series I have been watching seem to have 'reset' back to what I had watched before the Christmas Eve outage. I had to skip over several episodes I had watched since. I wonder if some data recovery ended up restoring some older data by mistake.
