Do you have links to the owners talk?

It's mentioned a number of times by several posters in this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/149-bl...y-players.html

They mention Netflix and other streaming services specifically. No previous Sony models have had this capability.

I appreciate your time.

I skimmed through the topic and only saw to posts asking whether Amazon and Netflix can play in 24p, but no answers.
I'm guessing if the S3500 does not, the S5500 (3D capable) will not.

It's all very sketchy info with no difinitive answer. As I reported earlier, a Sony CSR confirmed that no x500 player they produce plays streaming services in 24p. I was rather hoping it was misinformation but I fear it is true.

A current review on Amazon says no 24p with Netflix but it does work with Amazon and Hulu. I'm in Canada and am unable to test. I shall see if another app I am able to use perhaps YouTube will work.

Sony themselves confirm 24p for Netflix on Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/forum/-/TxZVO1...sin=B00TYFCJOM

None of the reviews or questions on Amazon for the 3500 mention 24p streaming. But that player is identical to the 5500 except for 3D capability.

If you aren't getting 24p on yours, then you need to check all your settings, cables and intermediate devices (AVRs, switches).

^ Yeah this is weird. Same HDMI port as the Roamio was plugged in when I was getting Netflix at 24p. Same cable, same settings on TV, same Netflix content (known to play at 24p).

Encouraging info though thank you again.

If the 3500 model is basically the same as the 5500, does that mean 24p does not work with Netflix on the latter as well? That one discouraging Amazon review has kept me from buying the s5500 until I can get some actual conformation.

Playing a BluRay works in 24p correctly. That proves it's not a HDMI handshake thing.

Okay, thankfully I can update this thread with some useful information:

Using Snag Extreme app it plays in 24p. Netflix does not. I can only attribute this to the version of Netflix running on the unit that is not allowing 24p mode. This is somewhat moot as all I require is a device to play Netflix in 24p. I cannot get Hulu or Amazon herein Canada so am unable to test, but it is likely these two will work in 24p.
Netflix running on the TiVo Roamio worked fine in 24p as of 5 days ago...It is what it is...

So I'm stuck in limbo. Perhaps a Netflix app upgrade will solve the problem, who knows if it will or how long it will be before Sony release a FW upgrade. For now I think I am going to return the BDP and wait it out...

Since there are people in the above thread who have it working, I'd ask for advice there before returning the player. Could be something as simple as a setting you've missed.

^ Perhaps Netflix 24p was working on a previous BDP FW release, but it is not with the most current release.

There are no settings to alter, either on the BDP or on my TV. BDP is set for Network Content: AUTO 24P
Selecting Snag Extreme all content plays in 24p, exiting and selecting Netflix everything plays 60p.

I'm not sure how else I can describe it, but there really are no other settings to change.

My findings concur with an Amazon reviewer who stated in a review made a few days ago that Netflix does not stream in 24p

No -- the Oppo 103D does not output 24p in the Netflix app, so I use a TiVo mini for Netflix in my theater.

Could be some weird interplay with other settings, like deep color, cinema mode, RGB, HDMI control, quick start, you name it. There are 5 settings related to 24p alone (24p, BD, DVD, Data and Network). Are all of those ON/AUTO? I've had dozens of Sony BD players since the beginning of BD, and all have had illogical settings that inter-relate in unexpected ways. Some recent BD players (I forget which make) would only do 24p Netflix if you had previously played a BD at 24p. So weird things can happen. I think it's worth a shot to try a few other things. Other than a settings issue, it makes no sense that it would work for some and not others.

I'll probably pick up one of these models myself eventually, but not anytime soon. I usually make my move when used prices drop below $40. The 1500 is getting close, but isn't quite there yet.

Anyway, I'm only in this to satisfy my own curiosity. I understand if you're tired of wasting time on it.

I doubt it's weird interplay if one app works and another does not.

What devices support Netflix Super HD and 24p?

There are other random apps I have tried last night that also stream at 24p so it's definitely app specific. The current Netflix build in this firmware is not allowing 24p. Whether a bug or by design this is what is happening currently.

jjcook, are you using a Mini by itself to do Netflix? I take it you have a TiVo account?

Yes the TiVo Mini requires a subscription fee to TiVo service (or the lifetime payment option). I'm not sure if it requires a base unit if you really just want to use it for Netflix and the other streaming apps (amazon, hulu, etc) which I can't speak to if they are any better than on the Oppo (if available).

When I trialled a Roamio and a Mini I had to marry the two. The mini would initialize to the Roamio as part of the setup. Are you able to use one without a mother TiVo?

Have you tried playing local media content like mp4 or mkv files via usb in 24p, does that at least work?

I've already tried. 1st and 2nd line support have no clue and blame Netflix (which is somewhat correct). It's ip to Netflix to fix or allow it. I've emailed them too.

I got the Sony BDP-S6500 last night and was disappointed to find out that Netflix 24p wont work
Since this is a very new model should I hang on to it in hopes of a firmware update that might fix this or should I just return it in exchange for something that is confirmed to work 24p on Netflix ?

I'd dump it and look for something else. It seems unlikely that they'll add that functionality later.
