As you all know I really go off on the Netflix Streaming Quality thread. If you all don't know I have issues with Netflix in the evenings on all of my streaming devices. In the mornings and afternoon I have no trouble getting Super HD. On my PS3 and PS4 it will usually start out horrible but all I do is FF the stream let it buffer then rewind it and within 30 seconds it is playing in 1080p Super HD. I can get immediate Super HD on my ATV3. After 7 PM EST issues start. I can usually get Super HD no problems but once 8:30 PM EST and 9:00 PM EST starts up it struggles to get to 720p. Usually like last night I can only get it up to 720p. The ATV3 will play at 720p but it will keep dropping down to 480p or low def. The Roku 3 has issues where it refused to go into HD at all no matter how many times I rewind and reload the stream so I disconnected it again. The Fire TV Netflix app is pure garbage as I can't even get 480p. The PS4 is the more reliable device but it gets up to 720p then might go up to Super HD after a few minutes.

You can see that all this started since June when they released that series I am sick of hearing about. What gets me is that I am not even watching anything remotely related to that series so I don't understand how it can put stress on unrelated programs like Disney comedies. Before June things were great though I had no issues on my ATV3 even saying it was now the most reliable streaming device. Since June it degraded which made me go back to my Roku 3 and at the time the PS3. Also I had a internet outage in June at around 1 AM EST to 4 AM EST which then changed my IP address which then changed where Netflix routed me instead from NYC CDN is got better because it only routed me to one Level 3 hop to the DC CDN which performance was worse because it was now two Level 3 hops. Then after a week now every streaming devices routes me all the way to Atlanta CDN anytime day or night which now goes though three Level 3 hops.

My internet speeds are a constant 16 down 1 up. My ping tests are a A everytime. My signal strength is strong according to my SB6141 modem page. I can also stream every other streaming service flawless day or night. YouTube, Amazon, Hulu Plus, Vevo, Watch channels, Slacker, Audio Addict you name it the only service that gives me issues in the evening is Netflix. Also it seems that Sunday and Monday nights give me the most issues with sometimes Wednesday and Thursday causing issues to. I can then stream HD on Amazon using my Fire TV no problems. Now if a movie or TV series that is in HD is on Netflix and Amazon I am going to watch it on Amazon as I did Friday night when I watched a movie on there.

I will be keeping this post updated. I will be on here instead of the other forum and I would like some feedback if I am alone with this problem. It sure seems like it.

Again tonight after 9 PM all I can achieve is 720p with a few bursts of Super HD but short.
DRC72's Avatar DRC72 04:00 AM 08-06-2014
After 8 pm I went down to 720p myself . But this is with AT&T uverse. It's definitely getting a lot better though.
reddice's Avatar reddice 07:44 AM 08-06-2014
I understand what you are saying that AT&T uverse has a agreement now with Netflix. Since the agreement you are able to achieve at least 720p playback after 8pm right? For me on Time Warner Cable it really does not make sense that after around 8:30 PM to 9 PM it only goes up to 720p with some bursts of 1080p but fluctuates a lot. Before that I can get Super HD in less than 30 seconds. I don't get it as something must be throttling it.

Also I search on Google News for "Netflix Time Warner Cable" everyday but nothing on issues or if they are going to make a agreement. Just Comcast this and Comcast that. Now I am hopping for the merger to go though at least if it does I won't have any issues with Netflix anymore in the evenings.

Search for Netflix here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/twc

If you sort by date - it really doesn't look like there a lot of people seeing recent Netflix issues with TWC.

Now go to the Verizon FIOS or AT&T Uverse forums and do the same thing and you will find some very heated Netflix discussions....
reddice's Avatar reddice 01:51 PM 08-06-2014
Still don't get why Netflix throttles me to crappy 720p after 9 PM. I would be happy if they throttled me to the regular 3850 kbps 1080p streams I don't care about Super HD but the 2350 kbps and 3000 kbps 720p streams on Netflix looks like crap compared to other services like Amazon which blow them away in picture quality.
reddice's Avatar reddice 02:01 PM 08-06-2014
Okay I found a site that shows how many hops I connect to.

Look how great it is when I use to connect to NYC.

Notice the two extra Level 3 hops and higher ms. Netflix is so freaking annoying that you can't set to what CDN you want. Hello NYC is closer than freaking Atlanta. Maybe if I lived in Georgia it will be different but I am in Brooklyn, NY. Also changing DNS is just a stupid placebo affect it makes zero difference as Netflix still connects all six of my streaming devices to freaking Atlanta.

Higher latency doesn't necessarily mean slower streaming. Most of the time, the data is simply sent, with only occasional returns to acknowledge things. I've had high latency through my work VPN at times due to goofy routing. It made remote desktop a bit sluggish, but actual file transfers were typically unaffected.
cinema13's Avatar cinema13 03:54 PM 08-06-2014
You guys are lucky. I can't get 720p unless it's 1 AM. And 1080? Maybe 2:30 - 3:00 AM (thru FIOS). Both companies point the blame finger at each other. Whoever is doing it, I do wish they'd stop!

That is what I though. I can stream the watch channels on the ATV3 great in HD (which is the only device that can streams them in HD) and the CDN is all the way in California.

I reset my router last night when I upgraded to the newest firmware which ruined my wifi range so reset it and installed 374.43 again.
I did get a new IP address and I still connect to Atlanta but I don't go though Level 3 no more. Last night streamed better than ever on my PS4.

Since they can be so rude on the Netflix Streaming Quality post I will again post my trace route on here.

Notice hops 6 and 7 they say tbone.rr.com which is Time Warner Cable. Also I looked up hop 8 which says it is from Time Warner Cable.

I am not complaining if this stays like this I will be happier than a kitten.

What does this have to do with TWC? Also you have to do a trace route with the actual IP Address to the Netflix CDN not the website.

Post has been deleted what do I care about TWC anyway ? Thanks for pointing that out btw...........my bad .

We are fortunate enough out here in the west not to have to deal with TWC any way my stuff is working fine maybe yours will work fine someday and you wont need a thread to complain about it in

Yes I knew all along I was trace routing the .com website on the PC not the hosted content playing on the Roku at the same time . it does strongly validate the direct peering of ATT /Netflix by implication perhaps I should have clarified that in spite of how obvious it was . I have since edited my post in the Neflix qual. thread accordingly .
reddice's Avatar reddice 04:11 PM 08-09-2014
I noticed using this website which tells you the IP addresses of the CDN that when I do a trace route to the NYC server I still go though Level 3. Netflix always connects me to the Atlanta server which currently now does a direct connection.

Glad I don't connect to NYC anymore. Lets hope it does not come back. Level 3 sucks under congestion.
reddice's Avatar reddice 03:20 PM 08-12-2014
Also I am on DSL Reports under tonyram57. Link here.
As I see there I am not the only one getting a direct connection when trace routing the Atlanta CDN. However they are still connecting to other CDN's which still peer to crappy Level 3. Lets hope Netflix does not think the NYC CDN is better which is not though crappy Level 3 and start to connect me there. I am afraid to reboot my modem or router and I hope I don't get a long internet outage in the middle of the night which actually changed my CDN from NYC to DC for a week then Atlanta in June.

This sucks. Back to crappy Level3 again and I am connecting back to the NYC CDN.

Also pinging the Atlanta server which I no longer connect to goes though crappy Level3.

I think they are testing it as this address 108.175.35.169 still does direct peering. Also I am now connecting localy to NYC CDN again which at least goes though only one Level3 hop. Just some kind of notice in the news that is not about Comcast, Verizon, AT&T and originals would confirm they are doing something. At least I will be back on the PS4 as because of the bigger buffer it can handle congestion better than the ATV3 which can't.
reddice's Avatar reddice 08:56 PM 08-14-2014
Streaming great tonight some programs peered to level 3 which still played great while some others did direct peering all programs coming from the NYC CDN.
reddice's Avatar reddice 09:28 PM 08-14-2014
Atlanta CDN is now doing a direct connection again but however I hope it stays connected to the NYC CDN. Some programs still peer though Level 3 while some others are peering directly though TWC with a different IP address like 23.246.7.155 however they all streamed excellent tonight.
reddice's Avatar reddice 02:09 PM 08-21-2014
Netflix is now paying Time Warner Cable. It is all over the news now.

I understand why I started having issues starting exactly June 8th. This is when they started to get there equipment ready for direct peering. Also now I know why I was routed first to DC then Atlanta in June. It had nothing to do with my Internet going out or my IP address changing. Netflix and Time Warner most likely rerouted me and others to reduce load why they worked on the direct peering agreement. Also maybe that stupid Orange series was not to blame for my congestion issues.
reddice's Avatar reddice 08:09 PM 08-21-2014
Waste of time streams doing a direct peering are terrible only going up to 720p. Streams going through this 108.175.43.206 through Level 3 are playing in Super HD no problems.

What kind of crappy servers does TWC use. It was better before the agreement.

I've had Comcast go down in the neighborhood for a day a two at a time when I had them . Att Uverse rarely goes down for more than a few minutes .
TWC thing was probably a fluke . seems like some folks want to get in business they have no need to.
Somebody should review you know who ☺☺

BTW Streaming was great last night on my Roku 3. Normal startup to SD but a 40 second FF and Rewind gets it to start in 720p HD and it ramps up to Super HD in less than 30 seconds.
reddice's Avatar reddice 11:54 AM 08-29-2014
Almost every program streamed flawless except for Generator Rex. On the Roku 3 it took forever to even start and then it was horrible quality. Switching over to the ATV3 it took a while to load but started in HD. I checked the IP address and it was peering from a direct connection to Atlanta. After I watched two other programs on the ATV3 both peering from a 23 address with a direct connection to NYC. It must have been that particular program had issues maybe going to cruddy Level 3 in NYC so the ATV3 then used the backup peer to Atlanta. I notice when checking the servers using IE 11 it will show 2 NYC servers and 1 or 2 Atlanta servers which are most likely off load backups.
