Hulu Gems and Finds

Since Hulu is becoming more worthwhile especially with the ad-free option and that Epix titles are moving from Netflix to Hulu I though it might be appropriate to list some of the goodies we have come across on Hulu.

"The Protectors" is an excellent Danish series about the government bodyguards (Danish "secret service"). There are currently two seasons available and each story is two episodes.

I am not sure who has what sometimes, but I think these are fairly exclusive to Hulu:
Moone Boy
Charlie Jade
Tyler Labine slapstick-stoner comedy: Deadbeat

And at least some of the Criterion films:

Some of the Hulu exclusives are Canadian productions that might have shown on networks there but then so have some of Netflix "exclusives". Hulu is also jumping into the original series game too.

I also have the Showtime add-on and they have the first episode of "The Affair" season 2 available as a preview. Wonder if they'll do same for "Homeland" this week?

Should also mention that Hulu has all episodes of season one of MTV's "Scream." This seems to be a trend that some shows that where only 5 episodes have been available will have all episode available when the season completes.

"Deadbeat" is a very fun show and the second season has some interesting guest stars.

Not exactly a gem but tell me if you see the movie "Altergeist" at 1080p. Looks that way to me but I'm running an Nvidia Shield Console. The movie is a fairly good paranormal thriller part of it shot at the Korbel winery in Guerneville. And it isn't a "found footage" movie.

Hey Brian, did you try out the "Watchlist" replacement for the Queue? I had it and "liked it" (or got used to it). So I was a bit taken aback when Hulu on the Roku went back to the Queue sometime in mid-Nov. I didn't realize it had been that long, but the e-mail from Hulu was sent on the 19th of Nov. Hulu said it was going to revamp the Watchlist and push it out to hulu.com on the 20th of Nov and "Over the next few weeks, we'll be adding this update to Hulu on your mobile phones and tablets - as well as game consoles, smart TVs, and other living-room devices."

No, I haven't tried the Watchlist yet. My Queue is a bit of a mess.

In fact all I see is the Queue and no "watchlist" but are you referring to "Shows You Watch?"

I recommend the George Lucas interview in the Charlie Rose section. And the finale (episode 8) of "Wicked City" is available today.

I got a message from Hulu to try out the "Watchlist", which replaced the Queue. It worked on the Roku, but didn't really take on the PC interface. But I had really stopped watching the PC interface after SyFy stopped putting in the shows that you could only watch on the PC (I think I was watching Psych that way too).

Then, I saw a notice saying something like [Thanks for your feedback on 'Watchlist', you will see a new version soon.] And I was just trying to figure out if I needed to opt-in again or something.

Watchlist was OK, it was a little different, but it saves scrolling over to get to the queue.

I think Hulu is very dynamic about what they are doing. I recently posted a link to an interview with their head engineer and there was a hint that some devices may be getting things other devices don't because they may test that way. He's very into Google Cast and I'd swear that some shows are now 1080p because 720p never looks that good. But I'm watching on an Shield TV with Google Cast support. Even back in 2013 when I first got a Chromecast there were some ads that looked 1080p and choked the stream since they were targeted ads.

Figured it out, I think.

http://www.hulu.com/help/articles/50847982

This says they are rolling it out to everyone, but I don't see Roku on the list of devices. I had it on the Roku during the test, but I guess it reverted back to the Queue, while they update it to the final version. My account on internet browsers is on Watchlist.

The annoying bit of being in this transition/limbo is that I don't see a means to add new "subscriptions" to the Queue that I am (temporarily) stuck with on the Roku. I had to manually add in the latest Heros episode.

I did get used to the Watchlist and I think it was a little better than the previous set-up -- However, I am not sure which variant I had, as I don't remember seeing any of the dynamic ordering described on that page. Maybe my viewing habits are too simple/straightforward to see much movement. Or maybe it works so well that it fades into the background...

I'm surprised that they're using the label "watchlist" since Amazon uses it.

Not sure that the term is very trademarkable since it's use probably predates streaming services.

What's funny about Hulu is I used to be able to watch their videos on Linux. Since Adobe stopped updating the player for Linux they stopped supporting it. There is a hack for making the Windows version of the player available on Linux so I may try that. Many sites however are dropping the Flash player in favor of HTML5 video. The problem for Hulu is it complains about no HAL layer even on promo video which really doesn't need protection.

I just watched something on HBO Go (Kingsmen--lots of fun ) and I see that they use the term as well.

In the vein of quest hunts or Warehouse 13, The Librarians is on Hulu, along with the first and second movies in that series:
The Librarian: Quest for the Spear
The Librarian: Return to King Solomon's Mines

Some fun Criterion recommendations

1/ Lady Snowblood: the prototype for Kill Bill. You'll recognize a lot of elements that Tarantino stole/paid tribute to, including some iconic shots, the theme song, and the blood spurts.
2/ Chloe in the Afternoon, Eric Rohmer's comedy of French manners remade by Chris Rock into comedy of American manners I Think I Love My Wife.
3/ the Virgin Spring: the Bergman film that Wes Craven remade into Last House on the Left. Very different movies with the same plot.
4/ High and Low: Kurosawa does Law and Order:SVU

From reading "Dad's column" here I learned that the second season of "American Crime" started last week. Hulu blew it! It should have been in "Shows You Watch." There are now two episodes available so need to see if they stand up to last years show which started out a little slow so didn't take to it immediately but blew my socks off by the end.

Hulu has just added "Maggie" an excellent film with Ahnuld and Abigail Breslin. Ahnuld plays the father of Abigail who has been infected with a zombie like virus. Different from most zombie portrayals, this virus takes awhile to turn the victim leaving the friends and relatives in a tough time time about how someday soon they're going to need to deal with the victim. That makes the film a drama and not a sci-fi or horror film. IMO, it's got to be Ahnuld's best performance to date.

Hulu has added the third season of the excellent UK series "Line of Duty" only about a month after it finished playing in the UK. The first episodes starts off with a bang.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned "Chance" with Hugh Laurie. This is an excellent series actually shot in the San Francisco Bay Area (not Vancouver BC standing in). Great TV and especially enjoying Ethan Suplee playing his sidekick. And they finally showed in this weeks episode a shot of the new western span of the Bay Bridge.

One of these days they'll support 1080p/5.1. Their old excuse of "It's just TV so we don't need more than 720p/2.0" doesn't cut it anymore.

Supposedly it does support 1080p on some devices. I can't be absolutely sure about resolution, but I do get 24p on my TiVos (they output a 24Hz signal which they'll do if receiving 24p content).

I'm watching a lot of shows that are 1080p on Hulu these days. These can absolutely cannot be 720p. "Manhattan" season two has been one and "Chance" another. Hulu might be waiting for AV1 to release in the spring for surround sound. The other thing is they are doing these shows (when I can track the file size on Android TV) at 1.5 Mbps suggesting they aren't using h264 because in no way could h264 look that good. Their tech lead is into what Google is doing anyway so it's possibly VP9. They won't announce it because only hardware that can decode VP9 might get it. Android TV of course supports it as does Roku TV. HEVC might be used but Hulu would need to pop for a license and none needed for VP9. AV1 is supposed to base on VP9 or VP10.

I plan to see if I can build a Roku app that will report before and after bytes transferred like the app I built for Android TV. That provides the file sizes and will even compute Mbps for standard TV and movie lengths.
