iTunes 10.7 No Longer DL'ing 1080p

So I use iTunes 10.7 on my media server to download TV shows and movies and starting this morning I am no longer able to download videos in 1080p. Regardless of the setting in Preferences I only get 720p video. Is anyone else seeing this? I don't have the issue on my MacBook with iTunes 12.

iTunes 10.7? That is very outdated, from around September 2012. The current is 12.5.5.5. Maybe there is some restriction now being placed on older versions.

I use 10.7 for a VERY specific reason (wink wink). I keep all my media in Plex (including my iTunes purchases) and I have been able to easily accomplish that up to today. Unfortunately, I may have to investigate some alternative methods now that it seems Apple has put the kibosh on 10.7 and 1080p downloads.

I'm amazed it took them this long. With the Requiem developer announcing that they were ceasing development I figured Apple would put an end to using 10.7 to download any HD shows at all. It's amazing they've let it stick around for over four years to act as a gateway to piracy. Just goes to show how incompetent Apple really is.

Their downloads are such garbage quality though that there's really nothing worth protecting at this point so can't say I'll be too upset when they block the ability to rip iTunes content... Amazon and Netflix both blow away Apple in the video quality department so iTunes' crappy encodes are irrelevant for 99% of content these days anyways.

Does anyone else with 10.7 have this problem. I have 10.5.3 and can only download 720p too. Was thinking of upgrading to 10.7 but am concerned about this. There are lots of stuff not on BD that I still want to download in 1080p.

From what I infer, it looks like Apple finally became aware of some encryption hole allowing users to view the videos outside of iTunes or other Apple devices? If so, why are you complaining that Apple finally plugged that hole? Eventually, you may be restricted to 480.

And I imagine that they're complaining because who wants to be locked into Apple's ****ty ecosystem every time you want to watch a video you bought? Being unable to remove the DRM from iTunes videos = no sale.

It's probably not entirely Apple's fault. The media companies are probably pushing them (and most other services) to close any known loopholes. Plus, I think I read that Apple might start making it's own shows, so it has a stake in controlling who watches it.

I'd love to know if anyone else can still download 1080p on 10.7.

Apple just posted this:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207408

Does anyone know if you can download from say iTunes 12 and then import the file to 10.7 and have it play there. I can't upgrade my Windows machine past 10.7

Thanks for the Apple Support link.

A 1080p download from a supported version of iTunes and imported to 10.7 will not play. That was my usual workflow, and I just got the popup repeatedly to authorize the machine in order to play.

iTunes 10 on 10.8. Only 720 possible; files from current version (same machine, different partition) won'y work, either.

Still, better than DVD ...

Ah, that makes me feel better. Ish.

I've been banging my head against the screen trying to figure out why my OSX VM is stubbornly downloading 720p instead of the 1080p the UI clearly suggests it should download. I think our only option is to use something like TunesKit to re-encode the 1080p. At least 10.7 can download SD movies for Requiem to decrypt, which I do use when I travel with my iPad.

Well, this totally freaking sucks. F. I've been using Requiem for years. It's like freaking magic, and there's basically no alternative.

Guess I'm stuck with 720p going forward, unless I want to rip and re-encode BluRays, which takes forever.

I wouldn't bother using TunesKit or anything similar. Better to stick with 720p than try to re-encode iTunes-bitrate videos.

Ugh, I'm so upset right now.

If anyone finds a workaround, or even just has an idea to try, please let me know. Seems highly unlikely though.

I wrestled with this one for a while as well. However, after doing some actual comparisons, I honestly can't find enough of a difference between iTunes-compressed 1080p and 720p videos (even on my 65" Panasonic ST60) to actually care about dropping to 720p, and the upside is that it uses less disk space. I doubt using something like TunesKit or Noteburner would product better quality, and even if the results were visually the same, it's a waste of time and money as Requiem is free and runs much faster.

(Don't get me wrong, my Blu-ray discs still look beautiful on the big screen, so I can definitely appreciate "real" 1080p.... it just goes to show how lame Apple's 1080p compression algorithms are by comparison).

iTunes have officially updated to iTunes 12.6.2.20, you means 10.7? This is too old version. Why not update your iTunes to the latest version? Software needs to keep update to be better.

I realize that iTunes has since been updated, but like the others above was using Requiem so I could use the iTunes files on my Plex server. I have since moved on to M4VGear and it does a remarkably quick job with stunning results. I swear there is no way it is re-encoding the file as I can convert as fast as Requiem, but using the latest version of iTunes. For me, my problem is solved.

People were using 10.7 because the encryption it used for the video had been hacked, allowing people to decrypt it and play the video on non-Apple devices. Apple reduced the resolution to minimize the incentive to pirate the video onto unauthorized devices.
