Dolby Atmos now available on Netflix

Not sure where to post this but I thought people might want to know. Only bad thing is you need an Xbox One or S right now, and the 4 screen UHD plan to get Atmos.

At present, most/all LG TVs don't pass DD+ via ARC, so it's nice to know I'll never be able to take advantage of this

It doesn't say, and there is only one supported title right now.

Really? the article listed LG's OLED TV's as the next in line for support. Although it does say 2017 TV's.

"At present, the only devices compatible with Dolby Atmos on Netflix are the Xbox One and Xbox One S, though it will soon support LG's 2017 OLED TVs. Of course your TV, surround-sound system or soundbar will need to be compatible with Dolby Atmos too. You could use headphones coupled with the Dolby Atmos For Headphones feature, which is available to buy from the Dolby Access app in the Xbox Store."

Netflix's press release said they will add Atmos to at least 4 other titles: Blame!, Death Note, Bright, and Wheelman. And they do mention on the help page that you need the 4 screen UHD plan to get Atmos.

There is a workaround for Streaming Dolby Vision (DV and ATMOS) content for LG TV OLED's from VUDU or Netflix etc..
1. Need a Dolby Vision approved Receiver
2. Need a Chromecast Ultra
Connect the Ultra to the int of the receiver - the video would go to the DV complaint TV through the receiver with DV and the audio (Atmos) decoded by the receiver in ATMOS.
I have the Chromecast Ultra and have tried this on my LG OLED 2016 through my Marantz Receiver NR6010 but it is hit and miss I understand the 6011 will be upgraded to DV and some other brands are already selling or about to sell DV Receivers.
For DV Movies using UHD Discs such as Power Rangers use a UHD player such as Opportunity with two outs - the video goes to TV and Audio to Receiver (In this case only the TV needs to be DV compatible) the receiver only needs to have ATMOS decoding.
We are getting their.... now I wish they start selling projectors which are DV compatible.
The DV picture is amazing - Marco Polo - on Netflix is a treat to the eyes - top it up with ATMOS and ....

With regards to Atmos specifically, I don't quite understand how this workaround would work? Yes, the DV component would be fine, as long as the rest of the equipment chain is DV-compliant. But the Atmos portion... the source (in this case, the Chromecast) would need to output Atmos as well, correct? Right now, only the X-Box One/S would output the Atmos stream... so connected to a compatible AVR, there obviously would be no issues.

In instances where Netflix is updated on a Smart TV that doesn't output DD+ via ARC, the Atmos data wouldn't be available, so it would never make it to the AVR. At this point, you would need to use another device (other than the TVs built-in app).

You are correct - the TV's internal VUDU App will not pass ATMOS over ARC from 2016 and before LG OLED's.
The built in Chromecast Ultra app (this is a external device) does pass VUDU UHD Dolby Vision With ATMOS and I have tried it - Have not tried Netflix ATMOS although have tried Netflix DV through this device.

My OLED is DV E65 2016 Model But no ARC.

If your receiver is ATMOS you can connect the Google Chrome Ultra to your Receiver and the ATMOS should pass but not sure if 4K will pass - if you have a best buy in your area buy a Google Chrome Ultra and try it and if it does not work you have a 15 day return window...

Netflix recommends 3 Mb/s for Atmos. Does that include the video as well? Holy Smoke that is some serious compression.

...so streaming Atmos is compressed through DD+ compared to 4k blurays which add the metadata on top of the TrueHD uncompressed bed?

Correct.

But also be aware that the Fast and Furious 6&7 4k discs have DTS:X with a lossy DTS HD HR core instead of the regular DTS HD MA core. They seem to be the only exception so far.

Does anyone know if the Atmos outputted from the Xbox One S app is lossless? I have the option to use my 2017 LG OLED's native Netflix app to output it as well, but it is lossy coming from the TV. I did a quick compare this afternoon and it seemed to me that the Xbox audio was superior to the LG OLED audio.

LG OLED 65C7P
Pioneer Kuro Plasma PRO-151FD 60"
Yamaha TSR-7810 7.2 AVR
Paradigm Monitor 11 v3 (front), CC-370 v3, AMS 250, 150-R30 (ceiling) - 5.2.2 config
SVS SB-13 Ultra, SVS SB-12NSD subwoofers
Xbox One S, PS 3, Apple TV 4, Nvidia Shield Pro
