Low Quality with Chromecast and Google Photos

I've been using the standard Chromecast to stream & cast videos and services. Works sufficient enough.

Lately I've tried showing my travel photos & videos casting Google Photos through the Chromecast to the TV.

No matter the combination of casting device (phone/tablet/notebook) or TV (all 1080p), the photos (and videos) appear very pixelated and compressed. All of the photos are high quality at min. 10-13mp and 4000x2000 resolution. I even burned some of the pictures to a DVD and played it through a LG blue-ray player, and they look crisp and like the originals.

Is this a Chromecast, or Google Photos limitation? What can I do to cast the original quality to TVs to show friends and family?

Cheers
