DLP Cinema® Delivers Enhanced 4K Chip to Light Up The Biggest Screens

Now offering the largest portfolio of resolutions and the industry's only DCI certified solution
Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN) DLP® announced today it has started shipping DLP Cinema® Enhanced 4K chips to its licensees, Barco, Christie Digital and NEC. Projectors with the DLP Cinema 4K chip are expected to be installed in Q1 2011 and several industry demos are anticipated between now and then by DLP Cinema licensees. With the availability of this chip, DLP Cinema offers exhibitors the widest variety of stable resolution options to suit their needs at any screen size.

Regardless of resolution option or screen size, exhibitors can count on DLP Cinema's award winning technology to deliver all the light, to all the pixels, all the time, said Dave Duncan, business manager for Texas Instruments, DLP Cinema Products.

DLP Cinema's 4K chip will enable its licensees to manufacture the brightest and most energy efficient digital cinema projectors in the world. In addition, all projectors utilizing the new 4K chip will be designed to meet the Digital Cinema System Specifications developed by DCI, LLC for established image quality and security. Currently, all DLP Cinema 2K projector models with the next generation DLP Cinema electronics platform are DCI compliant.

Exhibitors will likely install the DLP Cinema 4K solution to light up theatre screens as wide as 100 feet and 3D screens as wide as 75 feet, which has been a challenge for competing technologies. All DLP Cinema projectors, regardless of the resolution, have the leading attributes for which DLP Cinema products are known, including precise DCI compliant colors, superior contrast ratios including greater than 2500:1 and light output necessary to illuminate the largest auditoriums.

DLP Cinema remains dedicated to providing the cinema industry with diverse platforms in both 2K and 4K solutions, said Kent Novak, senior vice president and general manager for DLP Products. Texas Instruments will continue to innovate and further the development of its DLP Cinema 2K chips which are indisputably the industry standard, including the capability of upgrading the newest 2K projectors to 4K.

In Conjunction with the Announcement, it looks as Christie will be the first to demo the New Chips.

I would love to hear a review from someone at BC2010 in Amsterdam about this product

Just emailed Barco PR to ask if Barco will be showing too. Hopefully the US lady will get back to me, I don't expect the one in Belgium to be still around to answer questions after mid-night;-).

Given that this one is before CEDIA, seems like the odds would be good that 4K DLP will get shown at CEDIA this year. I hope to see it there. I also wonder if there will be any demos at IFA later this week.

Thanks Peter. I didn't expect them to, but wondered if the Christie announcement somehow forced their hand. The Cinema Tech show this summer at the same venue would have been a better opportunity, but that didn't fit the time-line I guess.

Barco hasn't been involved in the DCinema and related showcases at IBC for a number of years leaving it up to Christie and Sony to provide the projectors for the various demonstrations and showcases (is it Avatar this year or Toy STory in 3D, The U2 3D one was shown there long before its theatrical release) at the main auditorium.

As for demo's at IFA, Darin, that would be up to TI, as it isn't a show that Barco, Christie or simillar vendors participate in. Doubt TI is bothering showing off its technical prowess at the show, sticking with LED, and 3D units in the CE/Business/Education space.

I doubt it Darin, 4k for movie sized screens is a compelling argument, they are rolling out the 1.35 chip now. the .98 which could be shared with home units wont be out for another 18 months. I think. That is when you could begin to see the HT 4K.

All I can say that after my questioning whatever little inflection in the tone of voice of the person that has seen it but could not talk,it appears that is going to look fantastic scaled from 2k.

There are plenty of big christmas trees in Bavaria year round Wolfgang. Anyway your basement is large enough to have a tree waiting for it. Keep it in a big pot, it sure will get enough light from the Belgian growlighting, to hold over many months;-).

Anyone want to take a guess when we will see consumer 4k DLP?

Whether its the econimy or business choice progress has come to a stand still the last few years with DLP. At this pace we may see 4k Lcos before DLP drops 4k on our door step.
For those who cant wait theres always the option to pony up with the big boys ( DCI )

4k displays are coming soon as 3d drive it.

its the only way to have the cheap polarizer glasses with a
3d display in full hd 1920x1080.
i think we will see this displays early next year.

but thats only for displays not for front pr.

my guess for 4k front pr. is a good 1 year from now for lcos
and 2 years for dlp.

but there is the source question!
what you like to see beside high 4k res. digital still images?

I am fine with upscaled content. Cinema DLP handles upscaling really well.

I prefer 2048 x 1080 upscales by the calibre over native hd any day, 4k is the same.

Well, Wolfgang, I came accross the announcement here on the forum, the post linked to dcinema or one of the other sites, that reproduced the release. And the TI release also from Monday, that announced that shipping of the chips had started. I later tracked the release on prnewswire, or was it bizwire.

It was later also mentioned in emails I received from Rave(?), I believe I also saw it in the inAVate email, perhaps in display daily. And of course in Broadband TV News' IBC special, promoting these big boys' toys.

Plenty of pre-show rewrites of the release. Haven't looked for reports from the show floor yet.

http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&so...=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Not even using the blogsearch googlenews.nl comes up with any showreport.

i read that all but thats not what i like to read.

i like to read from people that saw the pr. running with 4k content and
3d and some pictures from this set up at ibc.

the link you post show all the press things christie and barco did.

but its seams all this is a bit early.

sad as i have some serious problems that disabled me
to go to ibc.

Yeah had high hopes at the beginning of the week, even signed up for a presentation and dinner for Thursday night, looking forward to meet some foreign friends I hadn't seen in three years, but Tuesday night and Wednesday my leg took a turn for the worse and I couldn't even stand, I provissionally cancelled my plans. Then the inflamation made I got a fever, so Thursday I had to cancel my plans for IBC for sure.

I am starting to doubt they even have it at the show, as I can't find any online reports either.

Not even a mention on twitter.

Looking forward to your impressions. With lack of 4k content ( maybe they will demo some ) curious what benefits you might or might not see other then the obvious being able to sit closer. I am not sure that is something I would want to do with BDs due to compression but DCI content should shine. Keep us posted.

" I am not sure that is something I would want to do with BDs due to compression but DCI content should shine." I am on the other hand am very sure that compression artifacts (with a decent BD) are not increased by frame quadrupling in Enhanced 4K in any way to detract from the upscaled image.

Enhanced 4K will be de riguer in high end home systems. Watch.
