This problem was discussed earlier in this thread.

After two Sundays of this happening, I decided to set an additional timer that would change to Channel 15 (the channel I actually wanted to record) at 5:01 a.m. This worked for a moment, but Channel 61 was reporting the time as 5:02 and Channel 15 was reporting the time as 5:00. So for that first minute, the Zinwell kept switching between both channels, since it would change to one channel, only to be told by that channel that the time was off. After it switched back and forth several times during that single minute, it finally ended up on Channel 61, so I missed the show on Channel 15 for a third Sunday.

What I'm going to do now is turn off the automatic time function since the different TV stations here are all broadcasting different times. Why can't they just use the GPS system or something and all report the same time? I'm hoping that by setting the time manually, I will finally be able to watch that show that comes on while I'm sleeping.

Is channel 61 your highest stored channel? If it is, it's doing the same thing my two converters do, defaulting to the highest stored channel. Mine did it again just the other day. This time it changed the channel on only one of the event timers instead of all seven timers I currently have programmed.

This morning I visited the Albertsons store at Cully Blvd. and Prescott Street in Portland Oregon. They had 22 970A blue box CECBs in stock, priced under $50 each at the photo/video counter.

950 and 970 does it really matter which one I get? Solidstate has them both in right now.

Are you looking for a timer?

Except for the older 970A version which MAY have a better epg buried, there may be a slight improvement with the 950A.
There is also one additional control.
No big difference.

You have to get the right batch number and find a remote with the right code, don't you?
I'm looking for an older one, but some people may not want the trouble.

I just ordered a 950A.
I tried and tried to get Solidsignal on the phone and they never called me back.
I finally emailed them and got a response after I had ordered from DTVBoxanswers.

Dear customer,

I do not think we have that version for you.

Sorry,
(Referring to the 970A version I wanted)
____________________________________________________-

This is the response from DTV Box

We do not have any of the early 970A's left - they were in the orange box. We will have the new 970A's in at the end of the week, possibly Monday - they are in the dark blue box.

We shipped out the 950A yesterday and is scheduled to arrive on Friday the 23rd.

$52
$10.50 shipping on one.

They seem to avoid phone calls, but seem very rapid on email response.
As you can see, they gave me a detailed response, after a first contact with a little confusion about what I was asking.

The 950A and 970A have different tuners. Has anyone definitely identified the 950A's tuner, or done a true comparison of reception?

Maybe they're selling a lot better since the word has gotten out that they have the AM/PM timer now, and manual time setting, so there's a better alternative to the Pal and it's timers, and it's really the best choice out there for using for that purpose, guide or no guide (the PQ's probably better, too).

Remember how the Pal's price was originally set so high, presumably because of those extra "features"? Well, the Pal's value has eroded a lot since then, while the Zinwell's has climbed as it's taken it's place as the prime (timer) recording CECB now.

Pretty simple economics and not really unexpected.

Anyone who has a ZAT-950A, please get a philips screwdriver and open the case to identify the tuner. It's very simple and would take all of five min.

yeah...i had first thought they brought the price down because they were discontinuing the model. so the new batch of zat970s have the am/pm timer too? or is it just the 950As?

ZAT-970A's with 0831, or higher, and ZAT-950A's.

I asked SolidSignal about the difference. Reply:
The boxes are exactly the same, except the 950a has a tuner made of silicon so it's a bit more sensitive than the rest of the boxes that use a tuner
made of tin. The only other box that uses a silicon tuner is the DTVPalPlus.
I'm guessing that means it's the MicroTune (used in the DTVPalPlus and other Zinwell models).

I figure the closing sentence about "The only other box" meant the only other one they carry - not quite accurate since they also carry the Lasonic with the MicroTune.

It does make one wonder why SolidSignal charges $1 more for the 970A.

Wiki shows even more CECB's that have the MT2131 tuner. Their comment may be for the CECB's they have in stock.

Solidsignal says no.

My 950A came with the ZRC-4501 remote.
Will someone please clarify the differences between the two remotes?
Does it matter that I have this model?

Someone was asking in an earlier post where to find Zinwell ZAT-970A DTV converter boxes. My local grocery chain (HEB Grocery) here in San Antonio, Texas, has started carrying this model, just this week. Before that, they had some COSHIP model in stock for $40, plus a Sylvania Philco model for $44.95.

The regular price for the ZAT-970A was only $40, so I could use my 2 coupons and buy 2 of the converter boxes free of charge, no tax or anything. Haven't hooked them up yet, so can't report on performance or features that the other folks have mentioned. I did get the "0844" version. I just left our local HEB store and their shelves were filled to the max, all with the same series 0844 of this model. web address is just their 3 letters and dot com.

Hope this info helps someone else!

I have been using the Zinwell ZAT-970A converter box for several months and have it set for recording 4 weekly programs. Different channel and times. And working very well. Two weeks ago, all went OK except the last timer event. Upon starting the last event, all of the timer events changed to another channel. I re-entered the correct channels and a week ago, the same happened again. First 3 events were OK, but 4th event changed all the channels again. So I rebooted the unit (pulled the power for 20 seconds) and reset the events again. Everything went OK this past weekend. I'm guessing that the unit needs to be rebooted every few months just to clean things up.

Sounds like you may have had a power outage. When that happens, my unit reverts to the highest virtual number channel on my list. Having a timer fire when there is a signal dropout can also bork timers.

Glanced through 25 pages of posts, but missed at which brick and mortar stores this unit can be found for purchase. Many thanks.

Hi All,

I was curious to see why CR listed an online store (unknown) as selling the ZAT-970A for $45. I had no luck finding any online stores selling them for such a great price. Unfortunately Arizona doesn't have any albertson's or meijers located out here. Any ideas as to where to go online for the best deals for this particular converter box?

Thx.

The Sansonic FT-300A also has one, I'm told.

But who cares, doesn't the silicon tuner benefit only the manufacturer (who does not have to align it) and not the end user?
