I purchased the RCA DTA800B1 converter box from Walmart and can not control my Magnavox combination TV/VCR model MC132EMG with the provided RCA universal remote.

The universal remote works ok with another brand TV I tested it on, but will not work on the Magnavox TV/VCR.

I have tried all of the program codes listed for Magnavox, Phillips, & Phillips Magnavox. Please help.

Since all of the TV/VCR combos are built by third-parties, you should also try Emerson, Funai, and Sanyo codes. Unfortunately, a Combo could use VCR codes rather than TV codes to control some features and the RCA remote is only going to include TV codes.

In general,
Most universal remotes are ill-equipped to elegantly handle the TV/VCR combo. Usually they suggest you treat it as 2 devices; program the TV button to work the TV functions and program the VCR button to work the VCR functions.
I don't know anything specific about the remote provided with your RCA.
Does the Magnavox respond at all (even partial functioning) to any of the codes you tried?

The RCA remote will control ON/OFF, VOLUME, MUTE, & INPUT (Channel 3, 4, & Line) on the television.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will try the Emerson, Funai, and Sanyo codes and post again. Currently the Magnavox TV/VCR does not reply at all. I would be happy if just the TV functions worked with the RCA universal remote.

I too have an RCA CECB and a Magnavox TV. The included RCA remote does work on my Magnavox, but my tv has a sticker that says: Manufactured by Phillips in Tennessee.

Maybe if you look closely you can find out who actually manufactured your tv/vcr. The nice thing about the RCA is it includes hundreds of codes, so I'll bet the right code is there somewhere.

I tried the Emerson, Funai, & Sanyo codes but no luck. The back of the Magnavox TV/VCR says 'distributed by Philips', but no other manufacturer is listed.

Anyone else have any ideas???

Fixed the problem with the RCA DTA800B1 remote control by purchasing a Zenith DTT901 converter box. The Zenith remote was able to communicate with the Magnavox TV/VCR with no problems unlike the RCA remote. The RCA remote requires typing in each code, but the Zenith remote has an almost automatic search feature to find the correct code. I highly recommend the Zenith DTT901 over the RCA DTA800B1!
