The coupon program will officially end tonight (11/9) at 12 midnight Eastern. If you or someone you know still has a coupon that hasn't expired, use it quickly!

Well the only good news about it is that the prices are dropping, at least at a few of the online retailers I just checked; below coupon price.

Another hope(post coupons) is that cheaper boxes will finally start having features that were previously banned by coupon rules(Dolby outputs, HD outputs, etc.) but IMO the converter box market is basically dead as it is. I'm guessing they'll slowly die and no company will bother spending any money on developing a box that very few people will be interested in (AVS'ers aside). Canadian boxes may hold out hope though, if they don't ban certain features people near the boarder may have a chance of getting a newer designed better featured box, who knows.

Hey thanks Mosquito for your support during the CECB program. Your posts have always been insightful and your lack of self promotion has always been to the highest standards(almost too high since I bet very few people know you even offered the boxes). It seems the only way someone might know you've ran a site that sold CECBs was if someone else brought it up. It's been nice ride, thanks

Yeah I suspect the R&D is dead ($) other than like you said about other markets with boxes using the same frequencies and protocol. Now maybe we can get some integration into 'cheaper' recorders though, I can see a market there since the recording segment was kinda left out in the cold (two box limit, no dual-tuners, very limited timer boxes, pain in the ass application, etc.).

My Channel Masters and Zinwells have the Dolby Digital insignia (licensed) but my Artecs (no insignia) are listed as decoding it but with stereo output.

If nothing else we can be thankful for the CECB program for making available some pretty good tuners.

Indeed, in some cases I've heard of them receiving better than the tuners in DTVs.

I'm pleased, got a better pic and a few other extras for minimal outlay. A little bit of hobbyism too. A bit of a hassle though. Some of my friends hate it though, live on the first floor of a three story apartment complex next to an airport (ugh!); rabbit ears just don't cut it and an external antenna is out of the question (management).

Yes my coupon with an expiration date of 11/9/09 now went into my nostalgia file. I will bore my grandkids and tell them how the conversion to digital happened way back when.

Doesn't federal law protect use of antennas?

I hear some countries are still converting to digital, so box production is ongoing.
Let's hope improvements occur too.

Does that matter, when it comes to reception issues?

Yep. His antenna mounting rights are confined to areas which he owns or had exclusive control over.

Like they all replied. If my friend mounted an external antenna, didn't ground it properly, lightning strikes it and burns down the building then the apartment owner would be liable.

On the other side of the coin are home owners within a Home Owner's Association (HOA). The HOA cannot prevent them from mounting an external antenna to comply with an HOA's appearance rules because of federal law.

But virtually none of the are going to ATSC - almost all are going to DVB-T. And the chances of some box meant for the Canadian (or other ATSC) market coming to the US are pretty slim.

There's always the Internet (no U.S.A. CECB's though).
