I'll admit I'm not the first to jump on a movie with subtitles, but you don't even notice it's there after the first few minutes. Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favourite movies despite the subtitles. This thread is great so far and gives me ideas on which movies to show to people once I set up my dream theater. Thanks Ralph. Oh and spot on reviews imho.

Regards,

Just out of curiosity, which movie reviewed by you got highest mark ever? I know there is little difference between, say, 94 and 95; but how close to 100 some movie has got? Can we expect a 100 showing up?

Someone mentioned Pixar, so I thought I'd mention that I have "Ratatouille" and "Cars" and both have excellent picture quality and, so far as my untrained ears go, excellent audio as well.

I also wanted to toss a vote up for "Planet Earth". While many say that it doesn't have the best video or audio, it's quite excellent for a documentary and very fun to watch!

I'll second this request. For example, I was thinking of getting Superman: The Movie (one of my favorites from my childhood) but can't decide if it's worth it. Any others to avoid would be good to know.

Greetings,

Thanks everyone for you input and feedback. I would rather not begin a list of movies to avoid. It has been my experience that this type of discussion will lead to endless debate and carry this into areas that don't belong within the spirit of this thread. The Blu-ray Software forum might be a good place to inquire about a particular disc and its strengths and weaknesses.

Thanks again.

I'd have to vote for Pixar's 'Cars' as well. Everytime I watch it, I see something I've never seen before. Watching on a BDP-300 with a 46XBR-2.

I'd have to disagree with Gattaca as being anywhere near good video quality. It's one of the softest images of any Blu-Ray disc in my collection and apparently they've boosted the EE in an effort to counteract this. I own both the Blu-Ray and the SD DVD and it's questionable in my mind whether the Blu-Ray has a better picture than the up-converted SD DVD version.

Ralph,

I finally received Cloverfield on Tuesday from Amazon. Wow, that is the best demo I could play for anyone who doesn't believe in lossy vs. lossless sound. Incredible. I'm also thrilled that the video is a step up.

While I was on vacation last week I snagged a copy of Live Free Or Die Hard for $15.00 too.

Greetings,

Frank, 10,000 BC is a Warner Blu-ray Disc release. I don't currently cover Warner Discs for review but I may pick it up. If I do I will certainly share my thoughts..

I enjoyed "No Country..." but I found it to be a mixed bag on video...some quite sharp, and other parts I saw as quite 480p.

Best regards,

I watched The Orphanage last night. In terms of just pure sonics, the resolution of the audio is, I think, the best I've heard to date. Its that good.

I really felt like I wanted to learn fluent Spanish so I could appreciate it more.

Hi Ralph...thanks for your reviews. Creating a personal favorites list must be tough with so many choices (and I agree with many you have listed). But, how about Kingdom of Heaven? A great period piece, reasonably accurate historically, but most impressive is the great soundtrack.

Thanks! Marcus

Greetings,

I just added The Orphanage and The day after tomorrow. I recently watched The Orphanage and was impressed with its DTS-HD MA audio.

I have owned The Day after Tomorrow for some time but never heard it with decoded lossless DTS-HD Master Audio. This audio presentation always sounded good but I could not get over how much better it sounded bitstreamed from the Panasonic to the Denon. Truly reference quality stuff...

When I get the chance Marcus I will spin Kingdom of heaven in full DTS-MA and see what it sounds like.

Cheers,

Ralph,

On the video side one of the most impressive presentations that I have seen is the
Bee movie.. In terms of sound is good but is not great.... Also the plot is very thin...

Ralph,

You meant to say you enjoyed the DTS-MA on The Orphanage (there is no TrueHD track) I was blown away by that soundtrack myself. I just got done watching Live Free Or Die Hard and you were right, audio & video was a treat. The scene with the F-35 sounded amazing.

Thanks for the correction Marcus (so many discs !). I am glad that enjoyed LFODH and your right that is a great scene for audio.

Ralph, good list so far. TDAT has a stunning audio track (downtown LA tornado). For me a guilty pleasure is the video presentation on Crank (swimming pool sequence with water beading off Jason). Keep up the great reviews.
