"W-aste A-llocation L-oad L-ifter E-arth-Class"

Film Synopsis:

After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, WALLE (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose in life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he meets a sleek search robot named
EVE. EVE comes to realize that WALLE has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet’s future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans (who have been eagerly awaiting word that it is safe to return home). Meanwhile, WALLE chases EVE across the galaxy and sets into motion one of the most exciting and imaginative comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen. Joining WALLE on his fantastic journey across a
universe of never-before-imagined visions of the future, is a hilarious cast of characters including a pet cockroach, and a heroic team of malfunctioning misfit robots.

My Take:

Wall-E is a heartwarming, and delightful film that offers a fresh and innocent take on the sci-fi genre. As is always the case with Disney/Pixar animation the characters are drawn with purpose that really sucks the audience in. I looked forward to seeing how well it would work with these futuristic robots and of course they nailed it. Each character has wonderfully expressive features that give them just the right amount of personality. I loved how EVE, who has no real ‘facial’ features, is able to convey a range of emotions using body language and her eyes which are just single color, light emitting diodes. Wall-e is of course the most expressive and entertaining of the group. The story’s elements play well to younger and older audiences. There was certainly a conservationist message however didn’t see it as inherently foreboding. On the other hand the message regarding our reliance on technology and its potential effects on our minds and bodies was loud and clear. I thought the love story aspect was fondly tender and well conceived. The action and comedic based sequences were fun and are sure to keep younger viewers entertained. There was a little something there for everyone and it came together extremely well. I don’t think that it rises to the level of Toy Story but it is a charming and original animated feature that the will appeal to the whole family.

Parental Guide:

There is nothing contained here that wouldn’t be appropriate for all age groups.

Wall-E comes to Blu-ray Disc from Disney/Pixar featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 26 mbps and lossless DTS-HD 6.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 4.2 mbps.

This is a reference quality Blu-ray presentation that features pristine rendering, crisp definition, and vivid colors. In listening to Andrew Stanton discuss the look he was going for, especially in the story’s first act, it was apparent. He wanted to give the animation a filmic quality that accented his desire to bring forth a science fiction style appearance that was reminiscent of the films he watched growing up. I think he achieved that to a degree as those aspects of the early part of the film looked distinctly separate from the rest. The opening sequence doesn’t offer deep image penetrating colors due to the intentionally dusty and gritty look to the remains of the environment. Color balance within the earth and sepia tones used is quite natural with eye catching delineation and texture. Contrast is boosted a bit which gives the video notable dynamic essence. Whites are hot and grays are visibly gradational which reveals their excellent multi-stage depth. Once things shift to outer space and eventually aboard the Axiom, colors take on more prominence, variety and concentration. The interior of the Axiom is bristling with highly polished metallic surfaces that that are accentuated by crisp lines, bold lighting, and brisk colors. Primary colors like blue and red are noticeably punchy without being oversaturated or artificial looking. Blacks aren’t inky but they are stable with distinguishable progressive stages that give scenes containing mixed content excellent depth of field. A great example of this is the Bridge aboard the Axiom. The black surfaces on the various control panels stands out in stark contrast to the vibrant colors of the knobs, monitors, and other objects that make up the control center. The shots of outer space along with the exuberant color scheme that made up the planets, stars, and other objects in between looked beautiful in high definition. Images had excellent dimensionality with resolute sharpness and satisfying resolvable detail.

The lossless audio presentation was wonderfully detailed, dynamic, and unquestionably Disney. With Disney animated films the music is almost always an integral part of the experience and Wall-E was no exception. Thomas Newman’s beautifully crafted music sounded superlative as it held center stage. The film’s first act has practically no dialogue and the music provides an incredibly diverse and rather intricate instrumental description that is fascinating. The orchestration is highlighted by a broad soundstage and tonal focus that sets forth the characterization of the various instruments with aplomb. The definable and soothing articulation of the plucked strings of the harp during the sequence where Wall-E and EVE frolic in space outside of the Axiom was captivating as it extended throughout the room. The disc cover indicates a 5.1 channel DTS-HD MA encoding however my Denon’s display indicates a 6.1 channel signal. Surround activity was abundant and quite effective at creating a truly immersive and engaging atmosphere. The speakers seemed to disappear as the layers of music, spatial sound effects, and dialogue immerged from their acoustic boundaries. Imaging and dimensional placement were precisely effectual which elevated detail perception. The explosive and aggressive elements within the recording had excellent dynamic range. I would like to have seen better low frequency representation within the mix. There was ample opportunity for deeper bass emphasis during certain sequences that came up feeling a little light. The arrival and departure of the ship that delivered EVE to earth in the first act is an example. Dynamics were strong and forceful however the type of low level punctuation that would accompany the powerful engines of a starship didn’t have impact that felt proportionate. The same was true when EVE fired her blast weapon. However the sequence where EVE fires at the large magnetic coupler which causes the domino effect on the row of cargo ships had superb deep bass extension that rolled through the room on a cushion of palpable low frequency energy that was impressive. Regardless, the soundtrack sounded spectacular. It purposefully delivered its elements with smooth, crystal clear agility that never felt like it was bombastic or in your face.

What is the difference between the BluRay 2 disc set and the BluRay 3 disc set (besides a 3rd disc and being about $10 more)? What is included on the 3rd disc? Thanks....

I know this is a great score but somehow I feel disappointed that it didn't match "Kunfu Panda" in a perfect score.

I was under the impression (several web sites had apparently confirmed) that there was a 90-ish minute documentary, The Pixar Story, on Disc 2? I didn't notice it in your description of the extras. I would be disappointed if it's not there as I was certainly looking forward to that. Can we get confirmation or denial regarding this?? Thanks.

Good review. I have been awaiting this release. I have not seen this film yet, but I knew that it was going to get a reference quality rating. A 94 sounds good to me.

As I was making my way into this thread I thought to myself and wondered if this could get a 100 like Kung Fu Panda. I feel slightly disappointed as well, but I think we read too much into that sometimes. A 94 is still very good and I bet much of this film will match Kung Fu Panda in many aspects of picture quality.

This is only 1 review/opinion (and a good one, thanks Ralph). HDD, dvdbeaver, and HTF gave the A/V perfect 5/5 marks.

Hey Ralph - HDD didn't list this at all in their review. And the guy from HDDN said that he couldn't find the doc on the disc.

Are you sure its there? And did you watch any of it(I mean is it really HD)?

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Studio quality tier

HAHAHA. I'm the same. Thought I was the only one on the planet who hasn't seen TDK. My problem was that I spent the summer away in lockdown with the Army at a pretty strict training facility. Once I got back I only saw 2 movies: The X Files and with my son, The Clone Wars.

Blu-ray.com also gave it a perfect 5/5
I will be getting it no matter what as my son and I loved it in the theaters
Anything with a 90+ cant be bad

Greetings,

Actually my overall rating is in line with the reviews mentioned. A total score of 90+ would certainly equate to a 5/5...

Enjoy,

I couldn't find anything wrong with this release (personally) and rated it a 10/10 for both audio and video. Ralph's just a tougher grader which is why all the other kids avoid taking his classes

I got my Wall-E today from Amazon. I didn't even know it was delivered to me (just checked my mail). Darn, there goes my studies for tonight....

Update: You all won't be disappointed. The 1080P PQ and sound in DTS-HD are exellent! I love how the movie ends with the PIXAR logo and Wall-E. The GUI of the main menu is cool looking.

Cheers!
