"One word can change everything"

Film Synopsis:

Carl Allen has stumbled across a way to shake free of post-divorce blues and a dead-end job: embrace life and say yes to everything. Take a bungee plunge? Yes. Accept call-now TV offers? Yes. Learn Korean? Yes. Grab the first flight to anywhere? Yes. Win your dream girl? Yes. Crack up fans with a feel-good, laugh-loaded romp? Yes! Working every funny bone in his nimble body and every muscle in his hilariously mobile face, Jim Carrey plays Carl in a YEScapade about opening up to lifes possibilities especially when those possibilities include romance with an intriguing, free-spirited musician (Zooey Deschanel).

My Take:

Yes man is an entertaining and formulaic romantic comedy that is based on the book by Danny Wallace. It revolves around a divorced, uninteresting, bank loan officer named Carl (Carrey) who would rather spend time drifting along and wallowing in self doubt rather than enjoying life. He runs into an old friend who convinces him to attend a self help seminar where a radical motivational speaker (Terence Stamp) promotes his YES methodology. He purports that saying yes will change your life and open doors and opportunities if you truly believe and accept the philosophy. Reluctantly Carl gives it a shot. Initially his experience isn't a positive one but he soon discovers that seemingly dark clouds end up having silver linings. He jumps into the world of YES with both feet and finds that his life becomes revitalized. He is experiencing new things, takes on challenges, such as learning to fly an airplane and throwing a wedding shower for his best friend's fiance, reconnecting with the people in his life who he has been neglecting and a even gets a promotion at work. In the process he meets Allison, an attractive, outgoing, and slightly aberrant young woman who sings in a local bar band and organizes a jogging/photography group. Problems begin to arise through Carl's frequent use of the word YES. He ends up some rather bizarre situations (one involving his elderly female neighbor) and a lifestyle that slowly begins to water down any remnants of the positive attributes the old Carl had. He and Allison become serious but things come to a head when she discovers that Carl has been following the YES principle which puts the basis for their relationship into question.

This is a fun film that presses the right buttons. Jim Carrey can run hot and cold for me so I take his films on a case by case basis. When I saw the trailer for this my first thought was that it was going to be him at his over the top, crazy face, fast talking zaniest. When I saw that Zooey Deschanel and Bradley Cooper where among the cast it elevated my interest so we went to see it when it was in theaters. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Yes man. Carrey is at his comedic best when he balances humor with a little drama. His performance was certainly more charming than outrageous and I thought that he and Zooey Deschanel made a good pair onscreen. My first experience with her was when she was in Elf with Will Farrell. I was immediately smitten by her good looks and sultry voice. I have been a fan ever since. The plot isn't particularly fresh but the cast is well placed and there are some funny moments. Carrey does go into his crazy man act a little (Red Bull scene) but overall he nails this role and really seems to have fun in the process. I liked it even better on this revisit and have decided to add it to my Jim Carrey collection.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for crude sexual humor, language, and brief nudity.

Yes man comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner featuring 1080p VC-1 encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22 mbps and lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 channel audio that has an average bitrate of 1.6 mbps.

This was a nice looking high definition encoding from Warner that appeared to be consistent with how the film looked when I saw it theatrically. Colors are rich and vibrant with vivid hues and deep reds and blues that occasionally bloom. Complexions offer defining texture, and noticeably warm but lifelike tones. Images onscreen have appreciable depth, discernible fine detail and a light veil of grain that supplies texture. Contrast is on the money and strikes a good balance with brightness which preserves detail in light and dark elements. Blacks are punchy and visible detail in dark scenes and in uneven lighting, like the nighttime segments shot in the park and at the Hollywood Bowl is distinguishable. The Dolby TrueHD sound quality is quite good and is about what you might expect from a dialogue driven comedy. The bulk of the presentation is delivered via the front three channels. Imaging and off camera directional cues accurately coincide with the events occurring onscreen. Voices are realistically depicted and tonally delineated through the center channel as dialogue maintains a prominent position within the soundstage. The music score's electric guitar, keys and rhythm section are distinctly detailed, airy and have a palpable low end presence. There was little use of the surround channels although the entire soundstage gets a nice boost during the YES seminar sequence. The opening seminar segment and several points during have an enveloping, three dimensional effect and several tactilely rich low end sweeps that can be felt deep within the room. This is a pleasing and well balanced audio/video presentation that seems to replicate the theatrical experience.

**CIH users should note that the subtitles appear in the picture area **

Final Thoughts:

Yes man is an entertaining romantic comedy that uses a standard formula that at times feels a little contrived. I have no problem with that as long as it works and in this case it does. There are plenty of laughs, interesting characters and an appealing story to go along with them. Warner has done a very nice job with its presentation on Blu-ray Disc. The audio/video quality is excellent and the well rounded bonus features include a generous helping of Blu-ray exclusives along with a Digital Copy so you can take the film on the go. If you're a fan feel free to pick this up, otherwise give it a rent.

I like Carey but this one never really stirred my interest. Your review has me thinking I should add it to my netflix queue. Zooey Deschanel is one sweet piece of eye candy.

Then you'll definitely want to catch '500 Days of Summer' due out July 19th. I saw it at the Madison Film Festival a week ago. A romantic comedy that tries very hard not to be a romantic comedy.
