"They've fallen out of love and into witness protection"

Film Synopsis:

Hugh Grant and Sara Jessica Parker star in this delightful comedy about finding love in the most unexpected places. Two successful New Yorkers, Paul (Grant) and Meryl (Parker), are at their wits' end with repairing their strained marriage. But when they become the only witnesses to a brutal murder, the police hide them away in Wyoming - together. Now these die-hard city dwellers will have to survive the weather, bears, fresh air, and forced time with one another if they want to make it out alive.

My Take:

Did you hear about the Morgans? is a typical romantic comedy from a conceptual standpoint. I saw plenty of potential in co-stars Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker unfortunately the silly script and lackluster onscreen chemistry between Parker and Grant overshadow its ability to elicit genuine laughs and a sincere romantic connection. It isn't a total loss though. There is a cute subplot related to adoption and an interesting sequence involving a large bear that aren't bad. Grant's quirky demeanor and charming wit provide glimmers of humor and well placed supporting turns by Sam Elliott and Mary Steenburgen also help to soften the blow. Looking at this film for what it is, (contrived, silly, and a little boring) will probably make it a bit more tolerable especially if you like the co-stars. Its good moments were too few and in the end it failed to leave a positive impression on me.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for some sexual references and brief violence.

Did you hear about the Morgan's? comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 26 mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.7 mbps.

This is a high quality video presentation that seems a perfect match for the source material. Colors are deeply saturated with eye pleasing vitality and delineated depth. Images are resolute, with stable sharpness, crisp detail and appreciable subtle refinement. Certain scenes appeared better resolved than others although I suspect this is related to the photography and not the encoding. Contrast was dynamic without being overpowering and blacks were respectable in depth with discernible detail in low lighting and shadows. I didn't see any signs of video related artifacts and thought that in general video quality was excellent. The lossless soundtrack competently delivered the elements present in the recording. Dialogue was well intonated with crystal clarity and good room penetration. The presentation offered an open soundstage across the front with definitive channel separation and good dynamic range. Surround use was limited to spatial cues and occasional panning effects that enhanced dimension. This was noticeable during the rodeo and party sequences and created a fair sense of envelopment in the rear of the room. There weren't any sub bass frequencies contained in the mix however the subwoofer was used to provide low bass emphasis that extended the low range content associated with the soundtrack's elements.

Bonus Features:

  • Commentary by director Marc Lawrence, High Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker

  • (HD) Location, location, location! - Making of featurette - 18 minutes

  • (HD) Cowboys and cosmopolitan: The stars of Did you hear about the Morgans - 8 minute featurette

  • (HD) Park Avenue meets the prairie: The fashions of Did you hear about the Morgans - 5 minute featurette

  • (HD) A bear of a scene - 5 minute featurette

  • (HD) 2 deleted scenes

  • (HD) Outtakes - 6 minutes

  • (HD) International special - 13 minute behind the scenes featurette

  • Sony's MovieIQ connectivity

  • (HD) Previews: Dear John, An education, The young Victoria, Julie & Julia

  • BD-Live enabled

Final Thoughts:

Did you hear about the Morgans? is a mediocre and ultimately forgettable romantic comedy that fails to deliver the elements essential in a good Rom/Com. As a comedic film it isn't a total loss and I didn't mind the performances by the cast. I felt that the co-stars lacked the kind of chemistry that drives a good romance which is a shame because I like them both. It comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony in exemplary fashion by offering excellent high definition video, clear lossless sound quality and a fan friendly set of bonus supplements that include Sony's MovieIQ feature. If you're in the mood on date night give it a rent otherwise wait for it to come to cable TV.

Like what Ralph said, this movie is funny but in a mediocre way. Story somewhat seemed bland. This is good for a rental.

Cheers

No I did not hear about the Morgans. Sorry I couldn't resist. I have no idea about this movie. I never even heard of it until reading Ralph's review, which is odd considering the stars in it and the fact that I like to think I see a wide variety of films. I guess I will put this one in the Netflix cue.

I believe those scores are just for the A/V quality of the movie and not the movie itself.
