"How can a 10 go for a 5?"

Film Synopsis:

In this outrageous comedy, Kirk (Jay Baruchel), an average guy, can't believe his luck when the successful and gorgeous babe Molly (Alice Eve) falls for him. His smart-ass friends, his crazy family, and even his obnoxious ex-girlfriend are just as shocked as he is. Now, see what lengths Kirk goes to - including some hardcore man-scaping - to make the relationship work and prove that she's not out of his league.

My Take:

attachment.php?attachmentid=177328&d=1275760211

She's out of my league is a romantic comedy/bro flick about a mid twenties nebbish named Kirk (Baruchel) who has been unluckily in love and is routinely reminded of his status as a 5 by his buddies as well as his place at the bottom of the familial food chain by his brother and father. Kirk is a good guy with low self esteem who is reeling from his recent breakup with his bitch on wheels girlfriend Marnie. He and buddies, Jack, Devon and Stainer work for TSA at the Pittsburgh Airport where Kirk dreams of one day becoming a pilot. Kirk's place among the romantically disenchanted makes an abrupt turn when Molly struts through his security checkpoint at the airport. Her shapely figure and stunning good looks captivate every male eye within range. As everyone drools and ogles her the only one that maintains a sense of professional decorum is Kirk, which Molly notices. When she inadvertently leaves her cell phone behind Kirk recovers it and the two make plans to meet later so he can return it to her.

Molly is attracted to Kirk, a fact that everyone seems to notice but him. Molly is forced to take the initiative which eventually leads to she and Kirk becoming an item. They encounter unusual behavior from nearly everyone they know who find it hard to believe that she would be even remotely interested in him. Kirk's dysfunctional family only adds fuel to fire when he brings Molly to a family gathering at his parents house. Kirk's first meeting with Molly's parents doesn't go very smoothly either but the couple attempts to persevere. Amidst all of this Kirk has to constantly deal with the two of them running into Molly's past boyfriend mister tall, dark, handsome and successful Cam which only increases his insecurity about dating a 10. Kirk will have to man up in order to over come his status as a moodle (man poodle) and prove that he is in fact worthy of the gem that is now on his arm. Stay tuned to find out the answer to the burning question, why IS she dating him??

This film follows the romantic comedy/bro flick formula we have seen in similar movies and while some are better this one holds its own. I enjoyed the interplay among Kirk, Devon, Jack and Stainer and thought that Jay Baruchel gave a charismatic portrayal of Kirk which worked well opposite the sexy yet fragile allure of Alice Eve (who is stunning by the way) as Molly. She's out of your league's blend of witty dialogue, over the top humor and likeable characters makes for a charming, funny and entertaining addition to the genre.

Shes out of my league comes to Blu-ray Disc from Paramount featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 33 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 4.2 Mbps.

This is a high bitrate encode that looks solid throughout. Detail was exemplary as images looked clean, sharp, and dimensionally satisfying. I never felt that video was lacking in terms of depth or the perception of visible detail within the structure of objects onscreen. Colors were reproduced with balanced tonality and deep saturation which made them eye catching. Fleshtones appeared natural with warm highlights and appreciable complexional variation. Blacks were a solid shade of deep black and exhibited excellent dynamic range. Contrast was boldly applied but not at the expense of fidelity as images were pristinely rendered and free of compression related artifacts.

This being a predominantly dialogue driven film the DTS-HD MA soundtrack had no trouble rendering clear and well articulated dialogue through the center channel. Sound effects had ample dynamic range so that they sounded full bodied and punchy. This is not a film that requires heavy use of surround sound to deliver its message but it does rely on the entire soundstage for proper atmosphere from time to time. There is a scene in the opening where a jumbo jet executes a near field flyover that pans from front to rear that literally shook the room. The mix excelled at creating the right sounds at the right levels and placing them appropriately within the soundstage. Low frequency detail was used to good effect when called for and added solidity to the film's music score. I thought that it sounded great.

Bonus Features:

  • Director commentary with Jim Field Smith

  • (HD) Devons dating show! - Faux advice show featuring Nate Torrence in character

  • (HD) 5 deleted scenes with optional director commentary

  • (HD) Blooper reel - 6 minutes
attachment.php?attachmentid=177330&d=1275760211

Final Thoughts:

She's out of my league is a decent romantic comedy/bro flick that may not thematically be original but it's a charming and funny film that features witty dialogue, likeable characters, and over the top humor that makes for an entertaining watch on date night or when the guys/girls are over. Its debut on Blu-ray Disc from Paramount is accentuated by resplendent high definition video, estimable lossless sound, and a below average bonus supplement offering that is highlight by a director commentary and blooper reel. I am not so sure this warrants a purchase but if you're so inclined you can rest assured that its audio/video presentation won't be a disappointment.

Sure it does. Billy Joel got Christie Brinkley. And check out Christina Hendricks husband - total dweeb.

Though this guy is such a toolbag that you simply cannot believe it, even in like make believe.

Yes it does happen in real life. It may not last and dosn't happen often enough. I'm looking forward to seeing this film to see if there is a real personal chemistry (not eharmony crap but genuine friendship) between the lead charachters is that is worth following and rooting for. There have been some good comedies recently and I hope this is one of them. Good review as always by Ralph.

Beautiful guys only date/marry/sleep with average looking/ugly guys

if.........they are RICH, in a BAND, or both. Period.

Ugly dirtbag musicians have the hottest girls. Even if they can`t sing or play their respective instrument well. Join a band is my advice.

as a former member of the 'average guy/hot girl' club, let me just remind you all of the timeless wisdom of this statement:

"no matter how hot she is, somebody, somewhere, is sick of her crap"

the universe rarely puts meaningful substance into pretty packaging, so if you come across someone who meets that criteria, hold on for dear life and never let them go.

that being said, i wanted to see this when it was in theaters, and now i'm really looking forward to seeing it on video. thanks for the review!

So, this was my movie of choice tonight...I enjoyed it, but would probably give it 2.5 stars, MAYBE 3.0. I found myself wishing that it had been funnier and perhaps a bit more realistic. Seemed like the relationships were a bit too over the top at times, and much of the dialogue became distracting when it failed to make me laugh. It also would have helped if the ex wasn't quite as pretty as she was, I think.

Not sure how I feel about this one overall....can't say I recommend it, though.

I would call this film roughly a mix of “Superbad” and “Can’t Buy Me Love”. Lots of laughs, with crude over the top humor. My wife and I liked it, and it was a nice mindless break from some of the other films we’ve watched recently. It was a little better than expected. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, this film delivers a few unique scenes of its own.

The bonus material had some equally funny material.

Picture quality was on par with many good BD transfers. It won’t disappoint, but it won’t knock your socks off either. Sound Quality was fine as well. Pretty clear dialogue, but not much else to say.

A great film to watch with friends, or as a group.

PQ 3.5 out of 5, SQ 3.5 out of 5, Film 3 out of 5.

I would call this film... bad. Sure there were a few laugh lines but the guy was sooo nerdy and geeky and the gal so hot that there would never be a chance. But it's a movie, so things can happen. However, there was zero chemistry between the two where you might forget the reality of the impossible situation. And the story's premise was stupid. Highly un-recommended!

My wife and I recently watched this one (99 cent special on DISH) and we really enjoyed it.

I think we knew what to expect from it....campy, sophomoric....etc... But it was funny. I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a lighthearted movie with a lot of "sophomoric" humor. One of our all time favorites (comedy wise) is American Pie.

This movie leans more towards "chick flick" than pure comedy.....but we thought it was a good mix.

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

It's not a Kuro....it's bigger.

Agreed, thank you.

This was a PG-13 movie with F-bombs thrown into the mix. Didn't quite have an appropriate crowd to attract given that seventeen is the legal age for a sole individual to see this.

My wife and I thought this was very funny. Not quite up to Hangover, Superbad, Knocked up - but along the same lines...

yep - 3.5 stars is where I'd put it as well. And it didn't hurt that it was shot in Pittsburgh- my hometown.
(Not sure why some of yuns didn't like it- )

I got this movie from BB today with zero expectations but, surprisingly, I enjoyed it. As Ralph said, it's not original but it has an appealing cast and some very funny lines. It was a well spent 105 minutes.
