Great pix, great sound, but a story I've seen before..recently with TinkerBell..not exactly, but the same premise. I'm glad I didn't buy it, but I did "like" it.

Good call. With their audio design, a good thunderstom would have been spactacular.

Just my two cents.

The sound was stunning, I loved it from start to finish. Makes you wonder why so many films use DTS when you get a Dolby track like this.

In a nutshell, pretty much agree with the review, though I would have scored the sound higher than the video on this one.

I watched it twice on my Pioneer plasma and at night the first time with the kids I thought that the picture was so incredible it looks like 3D on my 2D screen. When I tried it in my room in the daylight it lost the magic.

great review...I usually don't blind-buy movies but I'm going to make an exception with this...both video and audio seem reference

That's hilarious, but if you dated them at the same time, then I can't see how that would ever lose the magic .

They always look good at night after a couple of beers, but when they show up on your doorstep a couple of days later during the daytime you soon realize the beer goggles were playing tricks on you

I can't recall a move whose trailer turned me off to a movie like this one when the film turned out to be great! Haven't seen the BR version yet but this is a must buy family flick!

My purchased copy should arrive tomorrow in the post, can't wait to watch it again!

EDIT- I watched this again last night, and was again surprised at the awesome sound on it. Definitely reference stuff. The video was awesome, especially the ship scenes, blows the mind, however, in parts less than perfect as stereomandan mentioned below. I also agree with stereoman and mentioned it before that I would swap the video Audio ratings.

Either way, a great movie with awesome sound and video.

Based on your review Ralph I bought this one sight unseen. I agree with your review with very few exceptions. Thanks for the time to write up your review.

Bought this one for the kids (and me of course) , and boy am I glad we have this in our collection. I enjoyed this story far more than Toy Story 3 by the way.

The story is fantastic, with quite a few moments that give you a feeling that adrenaline is racing through your veins. I felt myself yelling for Hiccup in a few scenes, I must admit. Fantastic stuff. There are VERY few "animated" films that I've enjoyed more than this. The kids absolutely loved it. I was only able to watch the first half during my first viewing, and the kids finished it up. They couldn't wait to watch the rest with my wife and I because they knew we would love it. We did. Granted, I happen to like stories with Vikings as well, so that plays a part.

It's funny Ralph, regarding the A/V ratings. I would flip them and give the video the 92 and the audio the 100. (of course there is no right answer). I would have LOVED to have given this film a 100 in the video department, because there were many scenes in this film that were THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN on my projector, bar none. The contrast, detail, sharpness, and color accuracy were awesome. The depth of field in many of the scenes was far better than what I'm used to. Almost 3d feeling. My ONLY gripe were the darker scenes, as already mentioned in the responses. I've adjusted the custom gamma on my projector very painstakingly, and I make sure that I am able to see good shadow detail when it is there. However, the APL of the darker scenes (some in the very beginning of the film, and some in the middle) was just way too low. These scenes could have used more lighting, casting shadows to add some contrast and life to the image. If these scenes weren't so dark, I would have rated this a 100 for sure. The dark scenes were tolerable, but could have been better.

The Dolby TrueHD audio is pure bliss. Not sure what else to say. Extremely clear dialogue. Huge dynamics, great bass, and excellent sound placement.

As you can tell, I loved this one.

PQ 4.5 out of 5, SQ 5 out of 5, Film 4.5 out of 5.

Darn.. I almost want to buy this now. However, I am still holding on to my "Blu-ray under $20" rule and see if that could last me through Xmas... Hopefully they will have this on-sale soon I am definitely going to rent this either in RedBox or Netflix for a preview though

I don't understand. It's 24.99. For another 5 bucks, you could be enjoying this fabulous movie and transfer. How much will you spend for a rental? A buck? A couple of bucks? That would bring the cost of a purchase now down to 23 or 24 bucks, or less.

Oh well, to each his own, I guess.

I understand. That five extra dollars can go towards another blu-ray release. After a while those extra dollars get you a lot more titles.

I assumed that's the single disc version, right? According to some review, it does not have the bonus video that the blu-ray + DVD double pack have. If you have it, can you confirm?

I love a lot of the pixar films but this one ( being dreamworks) beats most of them. Unfortunately incredibles and nemo still top but this is 3rd as the my all time favorite animation movie.

That's a bold statement, my friend. As much as I enjoy HTTYD (and believe me it's in heavy rotation here) I just can't say it's better than most Pixar films. IMO, Pixar is in a league all their own.
