"Don't let anyone tell you what it is"

Film Synopsis:

In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel's brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue.

My Take:

A few months back I was at the movies and saw the trailer for Catfish. The trailer reveals little but alludes to the fact that it starts out simply as a film that documents a real life romance that begins between strangers online but slowly becomes something much more bizarre. It looked intriguing and caught my attention immediately. The trailer did a great job of providing just enough but not too much which left me wondering is this a mystery, thriller, horror film or what?? I had forgotten about it until it arrived from Universal for review. It really wasn't anything like I was expecting. Due to the nature of the story it would be detrimental for me to go into any detail about what occurs. Catfish is a compelling and thought provoking documentary film that is more relevant today than most of us would like to admit. The cyber age that we live in dictates that we forego some of our protective layers in order to take a leap of faith by believing our eyes and ears when interacting on the world wide web. This film is justification that perhaps we relinquish too much of ourselves into cyberspace. Or perhaps not, it depends on your perspective. As I watched I had a varied range of thoughts/opinions that evolved along with the story. It was obvious early on that something was amiss and it didn't take long to figured out what it was. What I found so curious were the questions of who and why? Once it was revealed I understood and appreciated the nature of the telling. This is a must see film that teeters on the edge of pertinent commonality for every one of us who logs onto our computers and opens the door to the virtual world beyond.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for some sexual references.

Catfish comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios HE featuring 1080p VC-1 encoded video that has an average bitrate of 31 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.6 Mbps.

Being a filmed documentary this presentation really doesn't contain an over abundance of eye catching visuals. It was shot using a mix of hand held and concealed video cameras (standard and high definition) with the perspective often switching back and forth. The shots captured with the high definition camera were definitively resolute with rich natural color and excellent contrast. The lower resolution cameras were black and white, noticeably grainy, and soft. I had no real complaints with the video quality and thought that the variance contributed to the source material. This film is entirely driven by dialogue and rarely makes use of the surround platform. To that end this lossless soundtrack easily handles the recorded elements captured during the making of the film and sounds just fine.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Secrets revealed: exclusive interview with the filmmakers - 25 minute Q&A/discussion

  • My Scenes bookmark feature

  • Pocket Blu - App for iPOD/iPHONE

  • BD-Live enabled

Final Thoughts:

Catfish is a compelling and must see documentary film that teeters on the edge of pertinent commonality for every one of us who logs onto our computers and opens the door to the virtual world beyond. It presents well on Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios Home Entertainment and includes an insightful Q&A from the young filmmakers who saw the potential in it. This is definitely recommended viewing so be sure to toss it in your rental queue when it becomes available.

I couldn't wait and saw this in the theater. Though i wasn't shocked by turn of events, the people themselves are so compelling that I wanted to understand the "whys" of the people involved.

Another doc with similar theme is "Talhotblond" http://www.talhotblond.com/

King P...you've done it again ! Good stuff

Something to think about... do you think you can offer a "replay Value"
evaluation , either a yes or no... or some kind of scale for which can be measured .

I know it's highly subjective...but I think it can help others who may be on the fence for purchase.

I know when you don't think much of a flick...you say to give it a rent
or a spin... but what about the flicks that you like...but wouldn't watch again ? or the flick that you watch and reply 10 times because you loved it ?

Like Saving Private Ryan...or Scarface for example.

Great job again ,

Dave in Va.

Greetings,

Dave, this is a rental. Once you have seen it I don't see it having much replay value..

Saw the trailer on this a while ago and it definitely got my interest. When i first saw it it had that "Cloverfield-ish" effect on it. From what i heard the ending was a jaw dropper. Definitely going to check this one out.

Ralph, quick question for you.

I saw the real documentary about this story on 20/20 or Dateline (or one of those shows, can't remember). I already know the full story. They mentioned that a film was being made of the story, and I assume this is it.

Would you still recommend this one if you knew what I know prior to watching?

Greetings,

Dan, if you already know the story you probably won't find this as rewarding.

Thanks Ralph. I can see where the story lends to a great documentary film, but with all the other options out there bidding for my time, I'll let this one pass. Thanks for your reply.

I have one question based on what stereomandan said: If you don't know the story, but you have read somewhere that the filmakers lied and this is not a movie that was shot straightfoward but instead, they have filmed the ending first and then, they have built a movie around it, would the movie deserve the same score? Sorry my English. Fernando

Greetings,

Yes it would get the same rating. My rating is based on the entertainment value of the film. If there is a question about the authenticity of the story that is another matter.
