This has been great information regarding which machines Avatar 3D will play on, but my questions is where do you buy it? Is it not available unless you buy a Panasonic player?

Your choices are to either wait for this title to come off the Panasonic exclusive list (February 2012) or go to eBay and generally expect to pay north of $70.

I just bought Avatar 3D Blu-Ray on eBay (for a mere $80 ouch) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's an incredible movie and adds greatly to my ever-expanding 3D collection.
My LG being passive 3D did not detract from the experience at all, in fact I used for the first time some passive 3D clip-on glasses I also found on eBay from Germany. For anyone like myself who already wears glasses that is a great find and beats the ones that LG provides. Anyone who would like similar clip-ons make sure they are Cinema3D ones. I got them from THIS person.
You can get them at my local Best Buy but at the time they were out of stock.

Well it's not February yet and the last I heard from the buzz on the web was a March release at the earliest.
Let's hope it's the extended cut. Thanks to eBay I have the Panasonic promo version at the moment and it is pretty impressive I must admit, which makes up for the predictable story line.
However, my TV does a pretty good job with the original using 2D-3D conversion too.

3D fans are definitely becoming impatient waiting for this release, and understandably so!

My copy came with a blu-ray player purchase and it's the best 3D movie that I own. I'm beginning to be impatient waiting for it to be released in an "extended 3D" version. Hope everyone gets what they want soon.

Thanks for the review, Ralph, even if it has been posted for a while...

Panasonic are still offering it as a freebie with certain packages, so I assume they still have a stranglehold on the release.

It's still seemingly the property of Panny as no public release yet.

Or else James Cameron is still working on getting the extended cut processed for 3D as the Panny one was the original theatre cut.

I went to a theater 2X to see Avatar. The second time was to make sure that I didn't like it. The poor writing and resulting dialogue is so bad that it makes me cringe. I couldn't get past the dialogue.

On reading up further about it, the 3D versions is the same cut as the Panasonic Freebie one which I already have from an eBay purchase, so I wont be going for this one, extras aside. The extended cut may appear in 3D later on. Probably by then the sequel will be well on its way anyway.

OK so I've got a copy of the 3D Blu Ray from Best Buy...

Playback:

DIY HTPC (Core 5 i5 2500K, Nvidia 550GT, Creative X-Fi Titanium)
Cyberlink PowerDVD 12
Crown XTi Amps & DIY speakers - flat from 20-20,000hz
Vizio Razor 55" 3D TV (2012 model)

First things first... it's a Fox release so it's nice to see it load up with no issues, but I'm guessing the updates prompted by Prometheus took care of that.

Loading was unusually quick for a Blu-ray. Playback initiated immediately and looked/sounded great. I know this is the same version that has already been reviewed, and Panasonic made a good move when they bought those exclusive rights because Avatar is a great 3D presentation. Especially exciting to me is that the dynamic range of both the visuals and the sound exceed what I experienced with Imax when I saw it on its premier night. I'm a professional photographer and Avatar blew me away with the range of colors and the quality of the visuals... at home it blew me away even more. I'm going to check it out again this weekend with reference level sound and a proper viewing 'session' but this is not the time or place to discuss. I just wanted to report that the new commericially available version I bought from Best Buy is a great disc that operates perfectly and that Avatar looks better than ever.

Pity the extended cut wasn't released in 3D though. Still, it's an incredible movie though.

I bit. $24.00 isn't too shabby for this 3D release. Glad that it's been a real long time since first seeing it.

Ralph, your review is dead on. I always thought that but could not get the movie in 3d until a few days ago. I could watch this movie all day in 2d or 3d.
