"A dangerous comedy about having fun. On the run.."

Film Synopsis:

From director Jonathan Lynn (The Whole Nine Yards) comes this lively British remake of the 1993 French hit Cible Emouvante. Victor Maynard (Nighy) is a middle-aged, solitary assassin whose professional routine is interrupted when he falls for his intended hit, Rose (Blunt). When he spares Rose's life, Victor inadvertently acquires a young apprentice, Tony (Grint). Believing Victor to be a private detective, his two new companions tag along, while he attempts to thwart the murderous intentions of his unhappy client, resulting in comedic mayhem.

My Take:

I enjoy British humor and find that I generally get films like Wild target that feature the tongue and cheek style comedy that makes them fun. The film revolves around a middle aged hitman named Victor, a highly respected and sought after assassin, Rose, a vivacious, outgoing and beautiful thief, and Tony, an affable neer do well with a knack for being in the wrong place at the right time. Things begin when Rose gets on the wrong side of Ferguson, a dangerous mob type, who she scams him out of nearly 1 million pounds. He hires Victor to kill her but after watching/following her he finds himself quite taken with Rose. Growing impatient with no word from Victor, Ferguson sends his two bodyguard/goons after Rose. They catch up with her in a parking garage but their attempt to kill her is thwarted by Victor and Tony who unwittingly and mistakenly intervenes. Afterward the three end up on the run, being actively pursued by Hector Dixon, a guileless killer hired by Ferguson to complete the original job on Rose but who also seeks to eliminate his competition in Victor.

After seeing the trailer for Wild target I thought it looked decent and it was. It isn't side splitting comedy but its light slapstick, clever wit, sarcastic repartee and likeable characters is entertaining to watch. Victor is compulsive, socially inept, solitary and up until recently lived with his overbearing mother who constantly chastises him for not having an heir to pass the family business on to. He is lethal killing machine but suffers from an unwitting lack of fulfillment in his personal life. When he meets Rose she stirs something in him that he hasn't experienced before. He isn't exactly sure what he is feeling which leaves him vexed and bewildered. Rose has a breezy and gregarious exterior that hides a hidden desire for love, companionship, and security. Tony is a loner who grew up without a father figure that finds himself drawn to both Victor and the idea of a familial unit even an unusually dysfunctional one. The interrelations between these characters are the crux of the story with the meaningful interplay between Victor and Rose proving the most rewarding.

The action and comedy is light, sometimes silly, obviously sarcastic but rarely over the top as the script stays on point and doesn't veer toward nonsensical. Bill Nighy is an incomparable actor whose wonderfully expressive face and inconspicuous charm plays well against Emily Blunt's pitch perfect timing, free flowing effervescence and outright sex appeal. Rupert Grint plays this very much like he plays Harry Potter's Ron Weasley but it's refreshing to see him in something else nonetheless. Wild target is a remake of the 1993 French film Cible Emouvante. Having not seen the original I have no frame of reference but found this to be an enjoyable comedy. It's madcap entertainment of the mindless variety that if taken with a grain of salt is 98 minutes that is well spent.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for violence, some sexual content and brief strong language.

Wild target comes to Blu-ray Disc from 20th Century Fox featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 23 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3 Mbps.

This is a solid looking high definition video presentation from Fox. It features high level detail, strong contrast, deeply saturated primary and accurate secondary colors, that appear picturesque and vivid. Skin tones are tonally distinguishable with lifelike complexional characteristics. Images are resolute and sharp which enhances dimensional perspective and long range acuity (especially during the exterior sequences filmed in the city). Both interior and exterior scenes that are shot at night or in limited lighting lack the visual depth of those mentioned earlier but I wouldn't describe them as flat. Blacks aren't inky but display good dynamic range and discernible gradational highlights. Overall I found this to be a pleasing and pristinely rendered video encoding that is reminiscent of today's films that are released on Blu-ray.

This is primarily a dialogue driven film however there are elements in the soundtrack that require use of the entire system so its ability to clearly render those aspects is important. Voices are reproduced with transparent realism and lucid texture that is appropriately placed within the front soundstage. The surround mix appropriately utilizes the sound platform to recreate the many acoustic sounds associated with environments portrayed onscreen. The rear channels contain a mixture of spatial ambience/musical extension as well as directional panning cues that effectively support the front soundstage. This is a pleasing audio presentation that mated well with the source material.

Bonus Features:

  • On target with Emily Blunt - 3 minute featurette

Final Thoughts:

Wild target is a remake of the 1993 French film Cible Emouvante. Having not seen that film I have no frame of reference with which to measure but I found this to be a likeable comedy. At 98 minutes is runs just a little long but its light slapstick, clever wit, sarcastic repartee and likeable characters is entertaining to watch thanks to a well placed cast lead by Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt. Its arrives on Blu-ray disc from 20th Century Fox featuring technically strong audio/video quality while only offering a single bonus supplements that consists of a promo type featurette where Emily Blunt briefly discusses the film and summarizes the plot and characters. If you appreciate off handed humor you'll get a kick out of Wild target. Toss it in your rental queue and take it for a spin.

Great review Ralph, I agree with your assessment of the quality and the entertainment value, although I plan on rating it 7/10 (3.5/5) for one reason alone--Emily Blundt. Man, that woman is SMOKIN' HOT!

Hrmm...so we have Audio, Video, Extras, Movie itself...should we add the Hot chick rating as well?

And as always, thanks for the great review SIR POTTS!

I've been on the fence about this one but since you enjoy it, I'll have to watch. I read your two online publications daily looking for your reviews. There is no one I agree with more than you. Strange but true. (You and Ralph were always the best at your old site which shall remain nameless).

I don't post...maybe I should. I really came to love your reviews over at spot and followed you to your new sites. It's strange when you agree with someone so much. Keep up the good work!

From the start "I love you Victor Maynard" and Victor's visit with Mother and the gift of the Parrot, set the tone for the movie and what it was all about.
The pairing of Victor, Rose and Tony. Ferguson and Mike. Hector and Fabian all seemed to blend very well together, as did the script.

And yes Emily Blunt was smoking hot.

imo this is a feel good fun English humor movie.

Just got around to viewing this one. Four stars. smile.gif
