"OMG"

Film Synopsis:

3 times the laughs. 3 times the stupid. 3 times the pain. The jackass guys are back for their wildest round of mischief and mayhem yet! You'll laugh til your bladder pops or your spleen spleens as Johnny Knoxville goes roller-skating in a buffalo herd, Bam Margera barrels through a hallway of high-voltage stun guns, and Steve-O takes to the skies in a fully-loaded porta-potty. Get ready to go AC or DC with your choice of theatrical or unrated version, loaded with all the outrageous footage not shown in theaters. So brace yourself for uncensored, unbelievable and totally explicit stunts from the idiots you've come to know and love from a safe and sanitary distance!

My Take:

This is my first experience with the Jackass franchise. I have of course heard of it and seen brief glimpses of the absurd goings on here and there. I never had much interest in it but having seeing the trailer for Jackass 3 on several discs I had in for review recently I must admit to chuckling in anticipation. Paramount has included both the theatrical and unrated versions of the film. I watched the unrated cut which adds five minutes to the originals runtime. Let's be up front, this is the kind of stuff that you either find funny or insipidly repulsive. As a film enthusiast I can't help but feel that I have a responsibility to discount this type of movie making for the asinine banality that it is. The problem is that doing so would make me a hypocrite because I found parts of this movie to be hysterically funny. Yes, it's way over the top in it's incessant use of vomit inducing scenarios, gratuitous male form nudity and masochistic torture however I couldn't help but find the visceral reaction to many of the stunts and situations to be what cracked me up the most. Here are a few that stood out for one reason or another; Wee bar brawl, Electric Avenue, Beehive tetherball, Lamborghini tooth pull, The high five, and Lance the gagging cameraman. There are well over forty stunts featured in the film, some elicited no reaction while others left me covering my eyes, protecting my private parts or openly voicing disgust. All the while I must admit that it kept me watching. The cast is game to try anything and their comradery and familiarity with one another make it a bit more fun to watch. So here is what I will offer to those who have gotten this far into my review and haven't turned back. Jackass 3 isn't for everyone. If you're put off by outrageous, irresponsible, and nonsensical tomfoolery or have a weak constitution, this is a waste of your time. If you're up for stomach turning pranks, ridiculously brash stunts and crass humor then you might just find Jackass 3 to be a guilty pleasure that makes for spirited entertainment when the guys are over for a few beers.

Parental Guide:

This film contains graphic male nudity, extremely crude and dangerous stunts throughout and language.

Jackass 3 comes to Blu-ray Disc from Paramount featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.3 Mbps.

Captured in a sort of documentary style this film was shot using high definition hand held (of mixed resolutions) and concealed CCD type video cameras with the perspective often switching back and forth. The shots captured with the better high definition cameras were lucid, with crisp definition, rich natural color, stable contrast and punchy blacks. The lower resolution camera footage was noticeably softer and occasionally exhibited minor artifacts but was certainly clear enough to get the job done. I had no real complaints with the video quality and on a whole thought that this presentation looked quite good.

The high resolution DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack had excellent dynamic range and refining detail. Dialogue was articulately reproduced through the center channel and maintained a position of prominence within the front soundstage. This wasn't an aggressive surround mix but when applied the surround channels generated an immersive atmosphere that enriched the film's intentionally fetid elements. Front and rear channel imaging was excellent as off camera sounds and spatial cues mated perfectly with the events transpiring onscreen. Although there wasn't continued use of low frequency effects/deep bass, when present it resonated with punctuated authority that energized the room. I must to admit to finding this lossless audio presentation to be much better than anticipated.

Bonus Features:

  • Unrated/Theatrical versions

  • (HD) Making of Jackass 3 - 28 minute featurette

  • (HD) 11 deleted scenes

  • (HD) Outtakes - 27 minutes

  • (HD) Trailer

  • 3D DVD including 4 pairs of classic 3D (anaglyph) glasses

  • Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

Here are a few adjectives to describe Jackass 3: Outrageous, disgusting, moronic, ridiculous, masochistic and banal. Here are a few more: inventive, breezy, funny and entertaining. Definitely not for everyone but if you get it there are some truly priceless moments amidst the dreck. Jackass 3 chugs onto Blu-ray Disc from Paramount Home Entertainment featuring solid high definition audio/video quality along with a rudimentary but workable offering of bonus supplements that present fans with even more from the Jackass gang. If you enjoy this style of humor Jackass 3 on Blu-ray is worth picking up. If you're not sure toss it in your rental queue and take it for a spin. I guarantee that it will make an indelible impression one way or the other.

I had never seen a single episode of Jackass by the time the first film came out. I've since seen all four films (including 2.5), and I think I may have laughed hardest at this one. This was the first one I actually saw in the theater, and in between the tears and laughing I almost vomited at least twice - and I work in the medical field! It ranks up there with Borat as the two times in a theater setting where I simply could not control my laughter.

Anyone who has found the Jackass gang funny in the past should really enjoy this latest installment

I agree, the Wee bar brawl was hilarious, and I also liked the Knoxville golf ball in the racquetball court. My stomach muscles certainly got a heck of a workout from watching this flick.

Currently testing 3D with Sammy DLP, shutter glasses, and HTPC

I was just joking about seeing the previous films. I saw the first Jackass in the theater. I don't think I've ever seen a movie where I missed so much dialog the place was so loud from people laughing. My face muscles actually ached after leaving I laughed so hard.

Not true 3D Blu-Ray. It has an anaglyph version DVD included. Going to have to wait a while for a true 3D BD.
