"3D never looked so good"

Film Synopsis:

Paradise won't ever feel closer than it does in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3D Experience. Join supermodels Julie Henderson, Alyssa Miller and 2011 SI Swimsuit cover girl Irina Shayk as they explore the natural beauty of Maui and see it in breathtaking 3D on Blu-ray. Featuring exclusive interviews with the models and amazing photo sessions on some of the most pristine beaches in the world, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3D Experience is so vivid and lifelike you'll almost be able to feel the sand between your toes. So join us on our little trip to heaven.

My Take:

I remember the hype that surrounded the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue going back to when I first saw it as a teenager. The likes of Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Kathy Ireland, Rachel Hunter, Elle MacPherson, Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum were the subjects of many teenage boy fantasies. I haven't really paid much attention since the mid nineties but I am sure that the trend continues especially if this SI Swimsuit 2011: 3D Experience is any indication. Shot on location in Hawaii on the island of Maui it features supermodels Irina Shayk, Julie Henderson, and Alyssa Miller strutting their stuff for photographer Bjorn Looss. Each model gets their own segment where they are seen posing in various locations. Additionally each is interviewed and offer insights into the experience of working with SI as well as providing a little background on themselves. Photographer Bjorn Looss gives his thoughts on working with the models as well as some of the conceptual thought processes that goes into a shoot like this. As a documentary I found it to be on the bland side however combining it with the visual experience of not only watching these stunning women but taking in the gorgeous Hawaiian scenery elevated its entertainment value. Irina Shayk may be the cover girl but my personal favorite was Julie Henderson. I found her to be seductively alluring while conveying an air of confidence mixed with humility that made her naturally attractive. At thirty minutes this film is paced appropriately for the subject matter. I watched it with my teenaged son who had no complaints whatsoever. Fans of the Sport Illustrated Swimsuit Collection are sure to enjoy this high definition experience as it looks great whether viewed in 3D or 2D.

Parental Guide:

The revealing nature of some of the swimsuits worn by the models would make this inappropriate for young viewers but otherwise its fine for general audiences.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3D Experience comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony featuring 1080p MVC encoded 3D video and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound.

I generally prefer to view 3D that takes advantage of the depth and dimension that can bring images onscreen to life in a visually involving and natural way. This 3D presentation does just that and features excellent onscreen dimensionality and object correlation. Textures abound as the richness of the digitally captured photography is incredibly nuanced and lifelike regardless of their placement within the frame. Resolution and detail during the various wide angle shots of the volcanic landscapes, sandy beaches, and wooded locals retain a high level of clarity that is enhanced by the naturally rendered and lifelike colors. The interview segments along with some mid level camera shots are noticeably less definitive and appear flat compared to the others. Colors look terrific as the ocean, sky, and lush vegetation of the island are rendered with aplomb. By design this isn't intended to be a flamboyant display of the 3D technology however it makes for an enriching experience that enhances the nature of the subject matter and these beautifully captured high definition images.

The DTS-HD MA soundtrack clearly renders the recorded elements in this documentary film and sounds quite good. The front three channels predominates the mix with centrally focused dialogue and minor ambient bleed through the rear channels. The instrument driven music has appreciable top end air and defining low end presence that adds punch to the soundtrack.

2D Video Quality:

Video: 88

  • Black level/Shadow detail: attachment.php?attachmentid=109945&d=1210373699

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3D Experience comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24 Mbps.

This is an excellent high definition presentation that is cleanly rendered and visually gratifying. Originally shot for 3D the 2D resolution holds its own nicely but lacks razor sharpness and shot to shot continuity in terms of depth. The nature defined color palette is alluring as the deep greens, bright secondary hues and resplendent earth tones leap from the 1.78:1 framed video. Contrast balance is spot on as the various shades of gray and white are gradationally revealing. Blacks aren't especially deep but revealing shadow detail provides appreciable depth to low level scenes. These magnificently captured images of Hawaii are captivating as the richness of color, transparently rendered detail, and discerning sense of dimension are beautiful to behold.

Bonus Features:

Both the 3D and 2D Blu-ray versions are located on this single BD-25 offering. There are no bonus features included.

Final Thoughts:

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3D Experience isn't the most interesting documentary film however it's an engaging visual experience thanks to its three lovely subjects and a beautifully rendered high definition presentation that is enhanced by 3D technology. Fans of the Sport Illustrated Swimsuit Collection are sure to be pleased with this Blu-ray offering from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Very professional, mature review. I can imagine the way this review could have gone

I'm sure we'll see some amateur user reviews that back up my hypothesis on the immaturity of man, along with questions such as "how much pop out was there?"

I as well, would like to express my heartfelt anguish over Ralph being subjected to the grueling experience of this review ..

So is the production better than Bikini Destinations on HD-Net? That series is generally well done with some very good looking models and scenery. It's not in 3D but aside from that, I'm wondering how it compares.

Agreed, Best dad ever.

Is this the same video that is sold as a download on the Playstation 3 Store or is it significantly supplemented?

**Edit: I see the running time is 30 minutes, and model list looks the same so I'm guessing it's the same video with better tech specs, at least for audio, and including 2d and 3d on blu-ray.
