"It’s not war. It’s survival"

Film Synopsis:

Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his platoon take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered when hostile alien invaders attack the planet in this epic sci-fi action film.

My Take:

Witness the end of civilization unfold as hostile alien invaders attack the planet. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. Now it's up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his platoon to draw a line in the sand against an unknown and powerful enemy bent on exterminating human kind.

I didn’t hear positive things from the few people I know who saw this in the theater but I went in with an open mind just the same. I will avoid going into a more in depth breakdown of the plot because Battle: Los Angeles is a clichéd alien invasion war film that brings nothing original to the table. I liked it nevertheless and enjoyed its high production value, tightly focused script, and involving action which drew me in. I found the characters likeable, easy to root for and thought that the primary members of the cast gave solid performances. Let’s face it this isn’t supposed to be gripping, five star entertainment. As an action film junkie I think it strikes the right chords and makes for a rewarding popcorn flick. ‘Nuff said.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for language, sustained and intense sequences of war violence and destruction.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Battle: Los Angeles comes to Blu-ray disc from Sony Pictures HE featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.6 Mbps.

This is a high quality video presentation from Sony that looks superb. Images are visually arresting and have a rich dynamic quality that highlights its near flawless rendering of detail. The video has a three dimensional and razor sharp clarity that never left me wanting. The visual design features a limited color scheme that is aesthetically mated to the subject matter. The majority of the film boasts shades of gray, sepia, white and black. These colors are not vivid in tonality but rendering is clean and gradationally satisfying. Contrast is bold with inky blacks that have a near infinite level of depth without compromise to delineation. Shadowy areas exhibit excellent depth of field and visible gradational stages. Flesh tones are not overtly complex in tone but appear diverse in subtle structure and complexional makeup. This is a fairly sophisticated visual design that uses real imagery mixed with CGI. The end result is a superlative video presentation that conveys the spirit of the film.

The 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack presented here is an impressive one that utilizes the entire system to create a theater like experience. This is an engaging and dynamically energized surround mix that features high level sonic detail, superb directional correlation, seamless integration, and rhythmically charged bass extension that bass fanatics are sure to appreciate. Dialogue is definitive and appreciably lucid through the center channel as it reaches far into the room. It’s located just slightly in front of the left/right speakers within the acoustic space it occupies in the soundfield. I never had any trouble distinguishing even the slightest changes in the pitch or tonal inflection of voices. This is an active sound design that is loaded with various sound effects, spatial cues, music, and dialogue. Each is clearly represented with enriching clarity, detail and appropriate sound field placement.

This is a reference quality audio/video presentation that elevated the enjoyment of this action film. Those who like playing their systems at reference levels will appreciate its transient low frequency peaks, extended dynamic range and high level clarity. Its superlative high definition video is demonstration worthy and features deep blacks and exquisite rendering that looks terrific on my large screen. Kudos to Sony on a job well done.

Bonus Features:

  • Command Control – Interactive in film experience (via a picture-in-picture viewer) that features storyboard comparison and battle points within the context of the film.

  • (HD) Behind the battle featurette – 6 minutes

  • (HD) Directing the battle featurette – 6 minutes

  • (HD) Aliens in L.A. featurette – 18 minutes

  • (HD) Preparing for battle featurette – 5 minutes

  • (HD) Boot camp featurette – 10 minutes

  • (HD) Creating L.A. in LA featurette – 5 minutes

  • (HD) The freeway battle featurette – 5 minutes

  • (HD) Previews – Priest, Insidious, The Green Hornet, Never back down2: Beat down, Das Boot

  • Movie IQ

  • BD-Live enabled

  • Bonus DVD of Battle: Los Angeles
attachment.php?attachmentid=214250&d=1307541747

Final Thoughts:

Battle: Los Angeles is a clichéd alien invasion war film that brings nothing original to the genre table. Regardless, I enjoyed its high production value, tightly focused script, and involving action which drew me in. Its reference level high definition video and pulse pounding DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack enhances the experience even farther. Add to that a fairly comprehensive behind the scenes look at the production and you have a well rounded Blu-ray offering that is typical of Sony and makes for excellent popcorn entertainment when the mood strikes.

I plan to have this on it's street release... if nothing else but to rattle the rafters. I heard they stripped this down a great deal to get a PG-13 rating..if you notice thru all the carnage very little to no blood... everyone thats dead or dying is face down to hide gore. I look forward to this regardless...anything on Red Riding Hood ? Thanks King P..seems you been hammering them reviews away...busy busy Huh ?

I totally agree, just a dumb fun film. I liked it even though it had big issues and could be cheesy. I bet this has great demo stuff though.

I saw it in the theater and enjoyed it for what it is. It was cool that they did the majority of the battle scenes locally. One of the shots of the LA police station was filmed across the street from me at a bank building.

I had thought this was supposed to come out a month or two ago .. I see it's due next week .. as a fan of senseless, mind numbing action films that have a lot of LFE in it, a rental it will certainly be .. I mean, how bad can it be after a few beers .. ??

Thanks for your review Ralph. I am glad someone with great audio and video equipment, like yourself, has come out with a decent review on this film. After seeing it in the theater I knew it was going to be added to my collection. I think 'popcorn' flicks comprise a good deal of my 300+ BD collection.

Thank you for the review!

This one is a no brainer. Loved it in the theater, and I can't wait to have it playing at reference level in my room. 9.5/10 for me!

This is one of those guilty pleasure movies I tend to get on Blu Ray with only a gentle review nudge, and Ralph nearly knocked me down with his review, in a good way, of course. Will be buying this one.

I'll be collecting this one solely on Ralphs score.

Decent action film, storywise i thought it was mediocre.

I cant believe what i am reading! This is hands down one of the worst movies i have ever seen. There isnt one single thing i can say that is good about it. I am very open-minded to movies and this just blew me away, and not in a good way. I have never in my life wanted to leave in the middle of a movie. I stayed hoping something would happen and it never did. First time i have ever asked the manager for my money back at the theater. Aaron ekhart is a horrible actor (cant show emotion AT ALL), the dialog is atrocious, the special effects are so bland and boring, the story is stupid. The entire time you are watching it thinking "Go that way!" "Dont do that" "What are you doing!" There is a scene where they go in the sewer in the middle of the night, are down there for a few minutes (action never cuts away) and they come out mid morning! I'm sorry, i normally dont comment on reviews but this is the worst of the worst. I actually posted this on my Facebook wall 2 hours ago after i saw a commercial for the movie being released
"Please people, do my a favor. When Battle: LA comes out, dont buy it, dont rent it, if you see someone thinking about either of those, slap them and tell them you are saving them money, pain, time, and psychological bills."

I just cant say enough of how bad this movie truly is.

I love movies about aliens invading Earth! I saw this flick in the theater, and I was kind of let down overall. It wasn't terrible, but it should have been much better. The excessive shaky camera scenes literally gave me a headache before it was finished, but there were some pretty intense action war scenes throughout. As Ralph pointed out, this film brings nothing new to the genre.

I am hoping that watching this film at home will be a better experience. A blu-ray rental of this film will happen eventually to give it a second viewing.

I agree with that part, that was very annoying.. I HATE when movies go from dark to light or vice versa without suggesting any real amount of time passed.

however i still thought the movie was a lot of fun to watch.

I thoroughly enjoyed it at the movies. The price for my son and I to see it was $22, $10 for me and $12 for him...ouch! One of many reasons not to go to the movies.

Anyway, I mentioned to him that I couldn't wait to see it in my HT. This way I could enjoy it instead of listening to the jerks behind us talking through the whole movie! The biggest reason for not going to the movies!

...finally retired and spending time in my HT!!!

My equipment consists of:

Epson 9500 UB Projector; 110" JKP Affinity Screen; Panasonic BD30 Player, Toshiba HDA1 Player; Definitive Speakers (Center, Towers, Rear); Onkyo 608 A/V Receiver; Nevo Q50 Remote; TW HD Cable Box.

Good review, but no rated R factor might ruin this for me.

I mean, watching the 1991 Los Angeles riots might be more exciting, you think?
