Right... I've watched the LOTR trilogy more than any other movie in my entire lifetime and still never get tired of seeing it. This collection has a huge amount of repeat viewing value, so the $49 spent for this set was well worth it for me, and of course I'll buy the next release if it is an improvement over this collection.

Me, I went the "cheap" route and got "The Lord Of The Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Theatre Edition (Blu-ray)" for $9.95 each @ Walmart as upgrade to my DVD's, started watching them with my 3 kids just last night.
I do have the (3) Extended Edition (Blu-ray)'s in my Netflix que, will watch those in future maybe over Thanksgiving.

I could not find the extended triligoy set for less than $76, $46 I'll spend elsewhere, how'd it go for $49??
I'd get it if that cheap.

Other than the green tint armageddon I've seen on the forum is the theatrical version of FOTR that much of a step down??

I haven't watched it yet - but I got it for $49 as well... go over to bluray.com and set up a price tracker to alert you when it drops to below $50, that is what I did wink.gif

I picked up my extended edition boxed set at Amazon for $48.00 with free shipping .. drop it in your cart and watch the price ..

It was one of the best things I've ever bought for 48 bucks ..

I just bought the theatrical versions for $30. I'm not spending an extra $20-$40, for a few extra scenes..

There is quite a bit of additional footage in the Extended Box set .. as well as a wealth of other material .. 15 disks ..

The 3 versions of LOTR blu-ray length times breaks down like this:

Theatrical Blu-ray Release

Fellowship of the Ring 178 min
Two Towers 179 min
Return of the King 201 min

Total Time: 558 min

Extended Edition Blu-ray INDIVIDUAL Releases

Fellowship of the Ring 208 min
Two Towers 223 min
Return of the King 251 min

Total Time: 682 min (124 min of additional footage)

Extended Edition Blu-ray BOX SET

Fellowship of the Ring 228 min
Two Towers 236 min
Return of the King 263 min

Total Time: 727 min (169 min of additional footage)

I waited it out for the extended box set and feel it's unbeatable.

I finally cracked open this set and immediately put in Return of the King. On disc 2 just after the ghosts attack the ship it cuts to a scene with Frodo and Gollum and it looks grainy has all get-out. Was the movie always that way and I'm just not remembering?

If anyone is interested, Target has the BD EE's on sale for $9 a piece through 1/5/12. These are the movies only and each movie is two discs. These are exclusive to Target, so you will not find them anywhere else in this format (movies only and no bonus material, except for some small commentary).

I bought the EE boxed sets of each movie when they came out on DVD and never really watched the bonus footage, so this fit the bill (no pun intended) for me!

What are the differences between the individual EE blurays compared to the EE boxset? I like the original EE DVD set so I planned to buy the Target individual EE's.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of content (long movie). One would have to put two TV's side by side, one hooked up to a BD and one to a DVD and start both at the same time.

My guess is that there is no difference in content between the EE BD and EE DVD, aside from SQ and PQ.

Just noticed you were asking about the EE BD and the EE BD Boxed set. I would have thought they would have been the exact same. I can't imagine they would release multiple EE's. But since there is $$$ involved, you never know.

Thank you! I guess I should have picked up the Bluray Boxset earlier when it was $40.

It's on Amazon for $58 and I think BB still price matches Amazon. I stopped by BB earlier today and they had it for $100....ouch.

I spent $27 on the Target ones.

Saw it in Best Buy for $49.95 over the holidays. That's what I paid for mine last year thanks to an alert from SlickDeals.

So is the PQ on the EE versions that much better than the theatrical versions on BR ?!?! I was not that impressed with the theatrical versions I just bought.

Finally got these last month ! as Amazon made me an offer I couldn't refuse biggrin.gif and after holding out to see if they would indeed be worth purchasing for the 3rd time! Its good to see they were despite the green tint I'd read about in the FOTR which wasn't as distracting as I thought it would be but on to the EE and the treat I got as I had only purchased the EE of the TT on the DVD releases. The extra footage for many reasons filled in gaps and only enhanced my enjoyment by giving new depth to the story and captivated my attention that much more! As of last night I finished ROTK and after the 4 hour + movie I was a little sad it was over, my gosh the grays where beautiful and the climatic battle was a true crescendo and down right frightening at times!

Great review Ralph and I couldn't agree more as this being the most complete movie experience to be had wink.gif
