"Revenge is beautiful"

Film Synopsis:

From writer/producer Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Leon: The Professional ) comes Colombiana. Zoe Saldana plays a young woman who has grown up to be an assassin after witnessing the murder of her parents as a child. Turning herself into a professional killer, she remains focused on her ultimate goal: to hunt down and get revenge on the mobster responsible for her parents' deaths.

My Take:

I will forego any further breakdown of the plot as Colombiana is a paint by the numbers revenge flick that offers no surprises and features conventional action that proves mildly entertaining. Writer's Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen's signature is easy to spot in this strong female character. There are several scenes that reminded me of Le Femme Nikita and Leon, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The problem is the lack of character development and the overuse of the narrative plot points associated with the girl that becomes a lethal weapon to avenge. There is an extended chase scene, lots of pyrotechnics and weak attempts at intrigue and drama. Colombiana really isn't bad per se, but the ho hum factor makes it less compelling. On the upside Zoe Saldana is fun to watch and does a good job with a mediocre script and phoned in direction. At best this is middling popcorn entertainment. At worse it is a fast food mish mash that genre fans won't find enticing enough to sit through. I would say that I am in the at best category but must admit that most of that is due to my fondness for Zoe.

Parental Guide:

This film contains violence, language and brief sensuality.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:

Colombiana comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.6 Mbps.

This is a reference quality Blu-ray offering from Sony that looks terrific in high definition. The video is razor sharp with a slightly edgy but otherwise pristine quality that is visually pleasing. Detail rendering is nearly flawless with lucid visual acuity and fine articulation that brings forth lots of subtle detail in the images onscreen. Colors are rich and delineated with oversaturated primaries and warm tonality that make them pop nicely. The extensive palette of secondary hues that represent the period colors featured in the story, appear vivid and warm. Flesh tones are natural with varying degrees of complexional separation among the cast. Boldly applied contrast and consistent black levels provide excellent balance during bright scenes containing mixed content. Shadow detail is strong which brings out plenty of discernible texture in low/uneven lighting and dark backgrounds.

The lossless DTS-HD Master Audio surround mix does a nice job rendering the film's soundtrack. Dialogue has excellent intonation and clarity which allows even subtle changes in vocal pitch to be appreciable. This is a well balanced audio presentation that quite often engages the entire system. Dynamic range is excellent and the soundstage has an open expression that allows its elements to extend well into the room. Discrete rear channel activity isn't extensive however the action based elements provide an enriching level of immersion which is generated by a seamless sound field. The action is empowered by near field sound effects, and robust dynamics that energize the room. The LFE channel is frequently active and reproduces the film's extended lower bass frequencies with visceral impact that has palpable extension.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Colombiana: The making of - 25 minutes

  • Cataleya's journey - 9 minute featurette

  • (HD) Assassins - 12 minute featurette

  • (HD) Training a killer - 6 minute featurette

  • (HD) Take the ride - 7 minute featurette

  • BD-Live enabled
attachment.php?attachmentid=231068&d=1324051512

Final Thoughts:

Colombiana is a middling actioner that brings absolutely nothing new to the genre table. When you're in the mood for a little mindless action it may qualify especially if you like star Zoe Saldana. It comes to Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in a technically strong offering that features reference quality video and excellent DTS-HD Master Audio sound. The bonus package consists of a series of repetitive production featurettes, one or two of which are worth checking out if you enjoyed the movie. If you're curious give it a rent otherwise wait and catch it on cable.

It's a shame this doesn't contain the unedited version.
I read where the studio ordered cuts to get a PG-13 rating.
Colombiana was shot as an "R" rated film.
Instead we get the watered down version.
Hopefully the European blu-ray release will be uncut.

crap .. and it's waiting for me in it's Netflix envelope .. oh, well, maybe Zoe Saldana will make it watchable .. should have put "Warrior" at the top of the Q ..

Oddball: Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Cataleya is muy caliente! LOL!

As Ralph said the story is nothing new and has been played numerous times and different versions. Only this time Zoe is the assassin and the eye candy.

Luc should write a story about Cataleya and Leon (The Professional) doing a story together. That's going to be bad ***.

Sony is not Warners! The disc is Unrated...not the PG-13 version.

Oh know... didn't we just have another young female kid grow up to be assassin movie??!! Didn't we just have Hanna?

Did anyone find the opening scene where she's a 10 yr old jumping out the 3 story building like spider man and landing on her feet like some parkour veteran absolutely ridiculous and unbelievable.

Dude, it's a movie.
Ever here the term "suspension of disbelief?"
The reason you go to the movies is to be entertained and to escape from reality,
for at least a couple of hours.
If you want real life, might I suggest that you turn on the 6 o'clock news.

I was so pumped to see this movie when it was theatricality released back in August.
However the critics pretty much trashed Colombiana so I decided to pass on seeing it.

But I thought how bad can this flick really be?
After all this is a Luc Besson film.

So after reading some positive online reviews I decided to "blind buy" Colombiana on blu-ray disc.
Well after watching it for the first time I've got to say...THIS MOVIE ROCKS!!!
Good story, action packed from beginning to end and the lead actress Zoe Saldana is smokin hot.

Colombiana is the best "blind buy" blu-ray purchase I ever made!

Zoe Saldana

Hanna was incredibly boring.
Colombiana is action packed from beginning to end.
Plus Zoe is much better looking than the actress who played Hanna.

Well for me this is no Hanna--my favorite movie of 2011. But it was a good watch and I wish I could have seen the uncut version--I watched the Netflix version. I enjoyed it--some nice action scenes and some good LFE too.

If you only watched the PG-13 theatrical version of Colombiana then you didn't watch the movie.
Trust me you need to rent the unrated blu-ray disc to really experience Colombiana in all its glory.

Hmm--that's interesting. I don't have the disc at home anymore so I can't check but I did see on the Netflix site it is the UR version. I really didn't pay attention when I watched it since I didn't know there were two versions. It didn't seem like anything more than PG-13 to me but maybe it was the UR edition.

I'am really surprised that Hanna was your favorite movie from 2011.

That movie was soooooo painfully S-L-O-W.
Little to no action scenes.
I fought like crazy to keep myself from dozing off while watching it.
I kept thinking that the movie would get better at some point.
But instead Hanna got progressively worst.

Also the actress that played Hanna in the movie had those bushy
blonde eyebrows that made her look freaky deaky.

lol @ eyebrows

I know people who felt that same way. I think the reason I felt differently was because
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
there was always that tension in the back of my mind as she was evading capture. There was not really any time for her to just relax and feel safe, and that feeling stuck with me during the majority of the film, too.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to seeing Zoe in action

Hanna did get pretty good reviews from movie goers and critics but that is not really much of an issue with me. Everyone has different tastes and Hanna hit my movie tastes just right--I've watched it 5 or 6 times and never get tired of it. Just one of those movies for me. I love the way Saoirse Ronan played the part. Joe Wright took what could have been a dull script and made it a memorable movie--at least for me.

I preferred Hanna than this one; the latter's plot is too familiar.

One final scene was worthy of note - the Colombian crime boss. That was the most delicious part of the movie for me.

After all this is a Luc Besson film.

The problem is, he didn't direct it. This was a good watch, but I'm willing to believe it would've been great had Besson actually took the helm.
