I saw this film the other day, and I wasn't as blown away as I expected. It was an interesting story, but it was pretty slow moving during the character development portions at the beginning of the film. Things did pick-up as the story began heading towards its climax, which I did find entertaining. I also loved the film's cinematography as well!

However, I am not sure this film has enough rewatchability for me to make a purchase.

I bought it and hope it's entertaining and offers re-watchability.

Congratulation, Hugo has just won many Oscars, it's really a good movie, but not many people will love it because it's not easy to "digest".

I am going to do this as well. Keep hearing great things about this one. Ralph's A/V score sealed the deal.

Well, I just left one of the best buy stores in my area and every 3D copy of Hugo was sold out! I was a bit discouraged obviously cuz it turned out to be a wasted trip but encouraging for the format! I'm hoping I can come across one at a different store this week.

Pure cinema excellence! Hugo is a nice reminder of the relationship between movie watchers and film makers, it also rekindles a nice sense of "wonder" we should always keep in touch with

Watched a Redbox 2D Blu-ray rental last night, the picture looked fantastic. The movie Cinema Paradiso came to mind a few times especially since this is Scorsese's homage to the motion picture. There were certain aspects of the story that didn't quite work for me but overall it was interesting enough to buy some day. 8/10.

Am I one of the only people in the world that didn't really like this movie?

Let me start by saying I am as big of a Scorsese fan as you can find, but this just didn't do it for me.

Visually it was stunning and arresting. No doubt there. But after that visual brilliance wears off about 30 minutes into the movie, you are left with a very straight forward story with characters that you don't care about.

**SPOILER ALERT**

I felt for Hugo and that he lost his father, but I couldn't care less about George and that he is a depressed, washed up actor. When I found out that the automaton was linked to him, I didn't care and didn't think it was a twist at all.

It was a very drawn out story to reveal almost nothing and nothing that I cared about. I know this is my personal opinion, but it didn't pay off for me.

And maybe it's just me as well, but I thought Sacha Baron Cohen was miscast and the story made it where you should feel sympathetic for him, but I was more annoyed by him than anything.

This movie is shiny with a dull story imo.

As stated in the Blu-ray forum review, there is an abundance of cross talk in the 3D BD version. otherwise, beautiful to watch and a great story.
Still, it is a very worthwhile 3D movie to own, despite the crosstalk/ghosting issue.

Sony KDL-55HX729, Sony STR-DH820 Receiver, Sony BDP-S590 BD Player, Sony SA-W2500 subs, Sony, SS-CN5000 center channel, Sony SS-F6000 left and right front speakers, Sony 3D Glasses: TDG BR-750 & TDG-BR250, Apple TV, APC Back Up UPS XS1500, Apple Airport Extreme.

I completely agree with what GioGambino said a couple of posts above. In spite of the fact that the movie is impeccably crafted and clearly heartfelt, it ultimately left me a little cold and, at best, mildly entertained and very spoon-fed. IMHO, it simply lacked that intangible quality that elevates a motion picture to being something more than a pretty picture. As a big fan of Scorcese, I know he is very capable of imbuing a film with this quality. I read a review online at Slant that nails it. It is a very well written review that offers a very balanced perpsective and analysis of the film. I highly suggest that it is worth a read;

I enjoyed Hugo--I got the 2D version from Amazon. First, I am a big Chloe Moretz fan so it was worth it to me just to hear her talk with a British accent. But overall, I enjoyed the acting, direction and story--this is one I'm glad I bought and one that I will watch again. Different strokes for different folks--thats the story of movies.

Got it today from Target as Best Buy was sold out ( Blu Ray). I hope I like it. I bought Real Steel from a review here on a blind buy and it was a stinker IMO.

I agree about the visible crosstalk. I thought it was my Sony which is sensitive to crosstalk. Every time the automaton is shown there is major crosstalk.

Sony KDL-55HX729, Sony STR-DH820 Receiver, Sony BDP-S590 BD Player, Sony SA-W2500 subs, Sony, SS-CN5000 center channel, Sony SS-F6000 left and right front speakers, Sony 3D Glasses: TDG BR-750 & TDG-BR250, Apple TV, APC Back Up UPS XS1500, Apple Airport Extreme.
