"The lucky ones died in the blast."

Film Synopsis:

Survivors of a nuclear attack are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic.

My Take:

The Divide is the perfect title for this film. It not only describes the dynamic of the survivors, but the decent build of the first half and the nose dive into a drinking game worthy second half.

The film opens in a NYC apartment building as nukes start touching down on American soil. Know one knows the who or why of this attack, but in a panic eight tenants including Lauren German (Hostel II), Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes), Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction) and the buildings super, Micky (Michael Biehn- Terminator, Planet Terror), end up alive and stuck in the basement. Thankfully the buildings super Mickey is a bit of a loon and has been preparing for an event like this, having a secret stockpile of supplies. From uncertainty and fear to paranoia and desperation, we see how these strangers react to these close quarters with the knowledge of no way out and dwindling supplies. As their internal divide begins, we see them shed their last bits of humanity the closer they get to the inevitable end.

The film did begin well. We meet the characters, see their reactions and feel their fear and claustrophobia as they are stuck in the shelter of the basement. When the group are found by men in Hazmat suits out, they are forced to kill or be killed. Before the clash is through Marilyn's (Rosanna Arquette) daughter Wendi is taken. Josh (Milo Ventimiglia) gets a suit from one of the casualties and ventures out to find air-tight tunnels placed from outside their door to a lab. When he finds Wendi there, shaved head and intubated, he is chased back and the survivors door is welded shut. This is the other divide, as from this point out the film concentrates on the insanity that these people become and put each other trough, and drops what is happening outside and who these men are and what they are doing with the girl.

The movie really tanked from this point and lost all it had built and what it had going for it. It just wasn't the story I wanted it to tell, and I thought the one it did favor got tiresome quick. It was obvious these humans would go crazy and do what it took to survive. The loss of humanity, and what we will do to live in desperation tale just became a bit cliché and silly to me. The characters lost any slight bit of depth that was built and all became unlikeable, laughable and annoying. I really started off on this one's side this but ended up hating how darn laughable it became.

Parental Guide:

Disturbing strong violence and sexuality, and for pervasive language

The Divide comes Blu-ray Disc from Anchor Bay Entertainment & Starz featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22.2 mbps and Dolby TrueHD sound that has an average bitrate of 3.1 mbps

The films video presentation isn't anything special and its transfer on to Blu-ray just helps see that even more. Details are decent, however the dark surroundings don't help as I noticed some crushing in the shadow. The drab grayish color palette kills any wow factor, but hey, this is what the filmmakers were intending as this is a dreary and depressing tale (though laughable at many moments) and the imagery sure fits. Don't let the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless soundtrack fool you, this one sure didn't utilize surrounds as much as one would expect. The films does begin with a bang (you know, that nuke I talked about) and the first few minutes do sound great. The explosion and building crashing gave my sub a nice healthy workout and the groups frantic descent to find the basement shelter sounded just as frantic in the surround channels. After that it was just a lot of talking, whining and yelling that all came across as clear is it was annoying. Decent but nothing spectacular.

Bonus Features:

  • Audio Commentary with Director Xavier Gens and Actors Michael Biehn, Michael Eklund and Milo Ventimiglia

  • (HD) Trailer

  • DVD Copy

Final Thoughts:

I really started off on this one's side this but ended up hating how darn laughable The Divide became. I have read some people who were in favor of it, really soaking in its desperation and feel. Maybe I missed something, but I just couldn't buy into it at all. The video and audio are worthy of Blu-ray, but nothing memorable. I rarely do, but I suggest a straight up pass on this baby. Blah!

Thanks as always, Lee. I might actually pick this one up anyway just for the cast, but it sounds like another "Well, you gotta eat..." movie.

...and I need your sweet love, Latina T-Mobile girl!

I thought it was pretty good...considering. I wasn't looking for The Green Mile or Schindler's List.

I thought it was a great expose on the human condition and how far normal people will go when closely confined over months. I thought it was pretty good in that respect.

from the read of it, this is probably a "nothing to write the folks about" movie. Taken with that grain of salt, I'm sure I'll come across it some day and I'll watch it. I just won't go out of my way to do it. Maybe it'll come of like GI-Joe did. By the time I watched it, my expectations were so low that I really enjoyed it

There were so many moments where that human condition was only shown from the desperation perspective and it was just so silly. Also the films protagonist were beyond weak to say the least. Just awful. Did you not think it was ridiculous to drop the whole storyline of the girl and the men outside?

Also, do you think The Green Mile is in the same realm as Schindler's??

I laughed and shuddered all at the same time. First, I thought...ludicrous! Then, it dawned on me that they had lost their minds...basically. That scene was sad...but realistically possible...not inevitable, but possible.

Again, I'm not here to say this was "Shawshank Redemption" quality...but it was better than a 1-star IMO. A 1-star...woof...that's gotta be really really something from the bottom of the barrel. This was for me, at least a 2.5 out of 5. Maybe 2.9.

Did you not think it was ridiculous to drop the whole storyline of the girl and the men outside?

Yes...I was extremely frustrated by that.

I would have started chipping away at the wall until I made it on the otherside since it was already sealed. If I was the dude with the suit on, I wouldn't have run like a pussy considering I was carrying the m249 and the other people were unarmed. Yes, I wanted to see more of the "site". Also, architecturally, the "sealed" room past the door didn't match the internal layout of the building pre-nuke. There wasn't a small set of stairs that led to the basement and then a super long corridor like he was walking in the sealed chamber. You had to run down two flights of marble/stone stairs to get to the door. And the 1st floor wasn't some massive lobby either. It barely fit 50-100 people shoulder to shoulder.
But that's not a reason, even in the culmination of all the other issues, IMO, to give the movie a 1 or 1.5 rating. It was better than that.

Also, do you think The Green Mile is in the same realm as Schindler's??

No...but nevertheless a great movie. It was a relative categorization, that's all.

Well I've watched the first hour or so of this and I think it's good so far. Still don't understand why it got so many bad reviews. But I keep wondering if it's the kind of movie that should be 2 hours due to the plot and local. Seems like it should be more like an hour and a half long. I'm hopeful the last hour is good, cuz alot of people did like it though. I'd watch the rest but it's time for bed.

There is 1 slight issue I have with the movie and it's all that damn bass! The kind of bass you find in some horror movies, where there's nothing like blowing up or whatever, but the bass is there to I guess add to the tenseness of a scene. But it got really annoying after awhile in this movie. Because there's just so much of in each and every scene. My whole house is constantly shaking and there's nothing blowing up in the movie. And I'm a bass freak.

I never thought there was much in this movie to laugh about, most of it was fairly believable and fairly depressing.
Acting was good, audio and video was good, plot and story line are fairly believable.

I don't know how many times you may wish to view this movie, but if you like this sort of gender movie I would recommend a rental. However the price is fairly low to buy so its a toss-up.

Wow... I finally saw the last hour and all I can say is wow this sure went downhill!

It did get really silly. From around the 1 hour mark almost all the way up till about 10 minutes near the end. They should have just edited out that whole 40 minute section. And it would have been maybe nice to see a bit more about the girl and the men outside like you mentioned earlier Lee. What was really with them being just right outside the door like that?

And it seemed as if they were implying that they were possibly North Korean. Come on really? Nuke us and then come over afterwards? Huh?

I say pass on this flick.

Thank you for that. I think that pushes me over the top on this one. Will probably order today. I'm really hoping that the LFE is as aggressive/oppressive as you suggest!

I'm wondering though, did anyone else that actually saw this feel the same way I did about the bass in this movie?

I found nothing horrifying, thought the acting and the way the two antagonist guys became a joke. To each their own, I'm glad you dug it.

The second hour was different simply because of radiation sickness, which was most evident on Josh and Bobby, hence their strange behavior, but also as time goes on people will change in situation like that, and quiet frankly without put to the test in reality none of us would know who we really are until we would experience something like this. It's easy to be judging these characters from our arm chair. All in all I thought it was OK, it was a little too long no doubt, and the ending was exactly what you expected, but still I don't see why anyone find anything here laughable, maybe makes one's eye roll a couple of times but that's about it. Rental for sure.

I agreed with Lee's take on how the last hour or so had become laughable, and I think he means as in how silly it gotten. I get the point that they were trying to shock viewers and horrify them and all that. But to me they failed and it seemed more silly than anything else. I felt badly for the actors having to act all that out. I can't help but wonder if they felt the same way when they were acting. Actors are paid to act, and sure the money can be good if not really good for some of em. But there's gotta be times where they think to themselves, "I can't believe I signed on to do this film. It looked good on paper.......!" I just couldn't buy into into it at all. I just kept cringing more and more as it went on.

I'm somewhat surprised no one else mentioned...

how odd it was that the 1 guy shot the wrong guy! How in the hell could he have messed that up like that so badly? Had no problem pulling the trigger, just couldn't aim worth a damn........?!

And also in the trailer it looked cool, but in the movie...

when he lit himself on fire? Did that not look totally setup from the beginning of the scene up until he finally died? It's like he was saying to himself, "Ok, it'd be really cool if I just torch myself and then go walking down the hallway all slowlike!" "Ok, I need to get some gas all over the place, get a torch, ok drop the torch on myself and walk down the hallway, yea that sounds like fun!" If you looked closely, you could actually see the flame retardant suit he was wearing during the scene.
