"Nature Teaches Beasts to Know Their Friends."

Film Synopsis:

A banished hero of Rome allies with a sworn enemy to take his revenge on the city.

My Take:

Coriolanus is a lesser know play by William Shakespeare and this was my first experience with the story of the Roman general Coriolanus who is banished from Rome and joins forces with his arch enemy, Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler) to get revenge on those responsible. Ralph Fiennes stars as Caius Martius Coriolanus', and he also directed the film (he played the role on stage in the early 2ks). The film was set in modern times as many re-boots of Shakespeare works have been with hit-and-miss results (2001s "O", 2000s "Hamlet", 1996s Romeo + Juliet); in this instance it worked in very well. It might be the fact that I didn't know the story up until this viewing, but Fiennes passion for the project shined through and this was quite a film that was honest with its take on pride, politics and revenge. There was not a weak link to be found and Feinnes was incredible as was Butler in a surprisingly powerful performance. The screenplay from John Logan (The Last Samurai, Gladiator, Hugo) flowed and played emotion, anger and fear perfectly, syncing brilliantly with Fiennes brutal and beautifully impressive directorial debut. Coriolanus is a must see film that was sadly not given a proper theatrical release...that is a tragedy, indeed.

Parental Guide:

Rated R for some Bloody Violence.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Coriolanus is banished to Blu-ray Disc from Anchor Bay Entertainment & Starz featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24 mbps and DTS-HD MA sound that has an average bitrate of 3.3 mbps

Coriolanus is a tough video presentation to critique as on paper it gets a high marks, however, the sum of its parts just seem to fall a bit flat. Fine details are apparent, black levels are strong and there is a nice palpable bit of visible film grain to indicate no DNR was used. The films cinematography lends to a look that is cold with muted tones that don't pop off the screen and occasional moments of softness. On the other hand the Lossless DTS audio is very impressive. The film starts off with war scenes that uses LFE and surround channels with depth and accuracy that really sucked me into the film. There are stretches of silence where light and artistically placed/mixed atmospherics were utilized with perfection. Dialogue was always discernible, which can be tough considering some very nuanced performances/speeches of Shakespearian verse.

Bonus Features:

  • Commentary by Ralph Fiennes

  • The Making of Coriolanus

  • DVD Copy

Final Thoughts:

A great cast with superb acting, direction and screenplay from a lesser known Shakespearian tragedy, Coriolanus works with its modern day setting and its brutal and honest takes on pride, politics and revenge. With above average video and superlative audio, Coriolanus comes highly recommended and is welcome in my collection, as I will be viewing it again.

... modern day setting and its brutal and honest takes on pride, politics and revenge.

... nothing really has changed much in the world of politics in millennia ...

I did not enjoy the movie that much. Yes the acting is superb, but one has to be in the mood to see this movie, IMO. I would rent it first before buying ...

Excellent acting, directing and still it just didn't capture my imagination. I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't have much repeat viewing for me. A good rental.

Enjoyed this much more than I expected to, thanks in no small part to the stupendously good acting. Redgrave clearly deserves an Oscar for her role.
