"The World's Darkest Hero Rides Again"

Film Synopsis:

As Johnny Blaze hides out in Eastern Europe, he is called upon to stop the devil, who is trying to take human form.

My Take:

In Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) is called out of hiding to help a boy who is being sought by the devil. If he is successful in protecting this boy he is promised the curse of "The Rider" will be lifted and he can go back to his useful existence of mooning audiences as he does motorcycle tricks. The caveat is that this boy is the son of Rourke, the Devil and man Blaze made the deal with that cursed him to become The Ghost Rider in the first place. You see, good ol' Lucifer needs this son he made just to morph into because the body he inhabits is getting old. That is it for plot folks. Really.

I skipped 2007s Ghost Rider due to bad word of mouth; this had worse word of mouth so I went in with extreme movie prejudice. When Nick Cage is on, he is on, but when he is off, and he really gets under my skin. From the previews I figured it was the latter so I stayed away again. He was a real 50/50 in Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. There was the clichéd insane Cage lunacy, that I seem to just shudder when I see these day, but then there was times where he was decent as this asinine charter. After numbing to this flicks numerous plot holes, weak villains and lame story, I just stopped caring, which is the only way to enjoy this one. And miraculously, with the utmost trepidation, I admit to sort of enjoying it. Some of the action was fun, effects were cool and the Blu-ray quality was sensational. This was a fast, easy watch that gave my brain a much needed vacation from any thought at all. If you go in knowing this, you might sort of dig it too.

Parental Guide:

intense sequences of action and violence, some disturbing images, and language

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

**My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc.**

(Each rating is worth 4 points with a max of 5 per category)

Audio: 90

  • Dynamics: 395274

  • Low frequency extension: 395273

  • Surround Sound presentation: 395274

  • Clarity/Detail: 395274

  • Dialogue Reproduction: 395274

(Each rating is worth 4 points with a max of 5 per category)

Video: 92

  • Resolution/Clarity: 395275

  • Black level/Shadow detail: 395274

  • Color reproduction: 395274

  • Fleshtones: 395274

  • Compression: 395274

Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance rides in on Blu-ray disc from Sony featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 28,9 mbps DTS-HD MA 5.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 3.4 mbps.

Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance is eye candy, with some over-the-top effects and very cool CGI, with colors that are vivid and pop off the screen. Fine details have amazing clarity with every pore, wrinkle, and textile texture being completely discernible. Blacks are deep and show detail superb, which just ads to the movies three dimensional look.

The DTS-HD MA 5.1 lossless surround sound has great dynamic range and some moments of thundering LFE, I had no issues with hearing dialogue, while effect pans and sound-stage were spot on. My gripe was with some of the mixes choice in leveling the layers of effects, music and dialogue, as there was more than one occasion that the balance seemed off, thought everything was clear. This was of no major detriment as this was still indeed a very fine track.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Director's Expanded Video Commentary (PIP)

  • (HD) The Path to Vengeance (6 part documentary - 84m)

  • (HD) Deleted Scenes (11m)

  • (HD) Previews: 21 Jump Street, Lockout, Starship Troopers: Invasion, Men in Black III, The Amazing Spiderman

  • Ultraviolet Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance is a bad movie...but somehow ended up being a fun stupid popcorn flick, which it seems is all directors Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor (Crank) wanted. The Blu-ray quality was sensational and fans (if it has any) will like the picture in picture video commentary and 84 minute long documentary. This was a fast, easy watch that gave my brain a much needed vacation from any thought at all. If you go in knowing this, you might sort of dig it too.

Thanks Lee,
I did dig it..the technical side more so than the movie. I actually thought the first one was better, but the PQ and AQ was outstanding on the second. Looks like both will find a way into my library rolleyes.gif.

I felt gypped when I saw it in the theater, I'll wait for the bargain bin before I buy the disc.

To me the movie felt like it was made by a Russian mob trying to act like a big capitalist western film company.

How is it that in the first one he signed the deal with Pete Fonda but in the 2nd they had a different backstory. It was a little too comical for me.

I thought that was quite silly why they did that.

Wise choice. Worst sequel I've seen for a long time.
