"World saved. Humanity lost"

Film Synopsis:

The Elite, a team of super-powered antiheroes, is renowned for killing their enemies. Despite the acclaim and approval the Elite enjoy, Superman knows they are in the wrong, creating more harm than good by their methods. Tensions between them finally culminate in a mass showdown on Jupiter’s moons, when Superman is forced to prove that violence is never a positive.

My Take:

When catastrophe strikes, Superman once again rushes into action, but this time he gets some unexpected help from a new squad of super heroes calling themselves The Elite. Comprised of four powerful beings and spearheaded by the brash and calculating Manchester Black, this new force brings a raw, no-holds-barred mentality to the battle against evil. With swelling public support of The Elite's vicious methods, the stage is set for a showdown that has Superman feeling outnumbered and outdated.

This is my first experience with a DCU animated title and I must say that I rather enjoyed it. As a fan of the man of steel I thought that this updated story remained faithful to his character while adding enough edginess to make it feel both modern and relevant. The plot explores moral issues as it pertains to Superman’s belief in the inherent good of humanity and his ethical responsibility to uphold the law. His ways of doing business seem passé when The Elite come along and impose their own moral code which gives no quarter to law breakers. This initially draws support from the public/world that views them as a new brand of hero capable of quelling violence and war. When Superman stands between them and their judge/jury methods they deem him obsolete and targeted for extinction. The voiceovers by the cast are spot on and the narrative elements/action (along with their depiction) elevates the film above what you would expect from the type you might see on TV. I don’t know how this compares to other DC Universe releases but if it is any indication I look forward the opportunity to review future installments.

Superman vs. The Elite comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Home Video featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 16 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.4 Mbps.

Animation can sometimes be difficult to thoroughly judge when evaluating its video quality. There are aspects shared by both high definition and standard definition versions in terms of the absence of defining texture and lesser dimensional perspective. Objects in backgrounds are two dimensional which isn’t a problem but images can appear to have less depth. I have noticed that with good high definition animated video this is still applicable but rendering is notably improved. Such is the case here. Images have excellent visual depth with deep, rich, color fidelity and bold defining contrast. The video has tack like sharpness with crisp edges and distracting signs of edge enhancement. Blacks are stable, with enriching depth that enhances onscreen images containing mixed light/dark elements. I noticed some minor aliasing and banding but neither proved deleterious to an otherwise solid high definition rendering.

The high resolution DTS-HD MA soundtrack is well articulated with excellent headroom and crystal clear rendering across the board. The well balanced presentation features high level detail in a resplendent blend of dialogue, sound effects, bass and music. The results offer a dynamically satisfying, relatively enveloping surround sound mix that delivers punchy bass, and plenty of action based sounds/effects to make the experience fun.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Exclusive : Superman and the Moral Debate – 17 minute Featurette

  • (HD) Exclusive : What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?(Action Comics # 775) 5 page Digital Comic

  • Exclusive : Commentary with Joe Kelly and Eddie Berganza

  • (HD) The Elite Unbound: No Rules, No Mercy – 15 minute featurette

  • (HD) A Sneak Peek at Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 - 12 minutes

  • Alan Burnett’s Top Picks - Superman: The Animated Series - Brave New Metropolis and Warrior Queen – 42 minutes

  • (HD) The Upcoming Dark Knight Rises Theatrical Release Photo Gallery

  • (HD) Bonus featurettes (previously released) for All-Star Superman & Superman/Batman: Public enemies

  • Bonus DVD

  • Ultraviolet Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

This is my first experience with a DCU animated title and I must say that I rather enjoyed Superman vs. The Elite. As a fan of the man of steel I thought that its updated story remained faithful to his character while adding enough edginess to make it feel both modern and relevant. It comes to Blu-ray from Warner Home Video in a well rounded package that features excellent high definition audio/video quality and a complimentary assortment of bonus supplements. If you’re a fan this one is worth picking up.

Hey Ralph,

Just joined avsforum, although I have been using the site for more than a year now. I joined to express my elation that you are finally reviewing DC animated titles.

DC animated titles are amongst the best, and of late, some anime of late are also pretty awesome.

I am an avid fan of them, and I would recommend if you can, to review some of the below which I found pretty solid.

Green Lantern First Flight
Batman: Year One
Batman : Under the Red Hood
Superman and Batman : Public Enemies
Doom

and also
Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker
Appleseed I and II

Cheers Ralph
