Redemption has a price.

Film Synopsis:

A decent but troubled young man is sent to a psychiatric institution for the criminally insane and soon finds himself in a fight for his life battling ghosts inside his head and very real enemies all around him.

My Take:

Nick Stahl's troubles have been common knowledge this year and he showed up yesterday, again, after his second time going missing this year. Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes, and he also will be showing up on Blu-ray tomorrow in the straight to video On The Inside. Stahl plays Allen Meneric, a college professor who is committed to a psychiatric institution after he commits a brutal revenge murder on the man who assaulted his girlfriend. Opps...but he kills the wrong guy, isn't it Ironic, dontcha think? In the institution he meets Mia (Olivia Wilde) and he starts up a relationship with the bi-polar girl who has a secret . He also meets Carl, who is unstable and violent...a ticking time-bomb. As Allen hopes for some sort of redemption he is confronted with having to protect Mia from the violence and chaos of the institution. Can he deal with things different this time? Can he confront his past and come out mentally unscathed?? Hrmm...The antici......................................pation!!!

The movie tried so hard to get into the viewers head, but its ineffective flash-backs, silly situations (like criminally insane convicts being left alone to hang out and do art projects?) and lack of a real palpable conflict made On The Inside a slow paced snoozefest with a underwhelming script. It's really too bad as its cast all really shined here. Stahl, who I always have found engaging was at the top of his game, as was Olivia Wilde. and I would skip this one unless a real fan of any of the actors.

Parental Guide:

Violence and language

On The Inside comes to Blu-ray disc from Anchor Bay/Starz featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 25.8 mbps Dolby TrueHD MA 5.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 3.2 mbps.

On The Inside has a decent, but not trouble free high definition presentation. Banding was evident on panning shots, especially on lighter backgrounds. Though resolving facial features and finer details on close-ups, long shots and back ground definition was lacking. Colors were fitting of the clinical environment with its cold blueish pallet, and black levels were strong and stable. The Dolby TrueHD track started off impressive with a sonically dynamic and room filling score to the films opening. If there was more in the way of action and music, I bet this track would have shined. As it is, the films slight surround atmospherics add to the mood and all dialogue was discernible.

Bonus Features:

  • Audio Commentary with Writer/Director D.W. Brown and Actors Joanne Baron and Daniel Franzese

  • DVD Copy

Final Thoughts:

A slow film of no real substance, a drama with no real emotional pull and a waste of 90 minutes, On The Inside has some acting chops but thats about it. Coupled with only an audio commentary, which I could not bare to brave, this release from Anchor Bay has good A/V quality but not much more.

Since I assume that there is no nude scene with Olivia Wilde. there seems to be absolutely no reason to rent this!
