"The battle for earth begins at sea"

Film Synopsis:

The battle for Earth begins at sea in this epic action-adventure starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Alexander Skarsgård and Brooklyn Decker. An international naval coalition becomes the world's last hope for survival as they engage a hostile alien force of unimaginable strength. Ripping across sea, sky and land, Battleship is "a big bold blast" (MSN Movies), packed with spectacular visual effects and explosive action.

My Take:

Peter Berg directs and produces Battleship, the epic-scale action-adventure that stars Taylor Kitsch as Lieutenant Alex Hopper, a naval weapons officer assigned to destroyer USS John Paul, and humanity’s last hope in the face of a global alien invasion. Alexander Skarsgård is Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of USS Sampson; global music superstar Rihanna makes her motion-picture debut as Petty Officer Second Class Cora Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker is Sam Shane, Hopper’s fiancée and a physical therapist specializing in the rehabilitation of military combat veterans; Tadanobu Asano, is Captain Yugi Nagata, commanding officer of the Japanese destroyer Myoko and Hopper’s archrival; and Academy Award® nominee Liam Neeson plays Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane, Commander of the Pacific Fleet.

Battleship is based on the Hasbro Game of the same name. If you have seen the trailer you already know what lies in store. The script contains an underdeveloped/paper thin plot, cardboard cutouts for characters and some pretty corny dialogue/situations. I am not sure why they chose to advertise the film as being based on the game since there is only one sequence that remotely has any relationship to it and quite frankly it feels like an add on simply for that purpose. In reality what we have here is another alien invasion flick that pits our heroes against insurmountable odds designed to deliver action based melodrama. Sounds pretty bad I know. Actually Battleship really isn’t as bad as you might think. Yeah the plot/story and characters are kind of lame but the action is fun and the production values are high. Getting the most out of a movie like Battleship requires the complete suspension of disbelief and allowing oneself to get lost in its inanity. In that regard it’s a palatable bit of escapism when you’re in the mood for a bag of popcorn and a couple of hours of mindless entertainment.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for intense sequences of violence, action and destruction and for language.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Battleship comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 26 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 4 Mbps.

This is an excellent video presentation that boasts plenty of high level detail, bold use of contrast, deeply saturated colors, and three dimensional acuity. Blacks have excellent dynamic range with velvety depth and visible gradational highlights. Visual perspective in low lighting and darkened areas is estimable. The combination gives dark scenes appreciable dimension. Images are punchy, boldly colorful, clearly drawn, eye catching and perfectly suited for the source material.

The DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is sure to please those who like to play their systems at high sound pressure levels. This recording has excellent dynamic range and boasts enriching clarity and high level detail. Dialogue is definitive and appreciably lucid through the center channel as it reaches far into the room. It’s located just slightly in front of the left/right speakers within the acoustic space it occupies in the soundfield. Front channel separation and imaging is spot on. This drew out both large and small sound elements and allowed their directional correlation based upon the onscreen events to be definable. The mix makes effective and sometimes aggressive use of the surround channels to accentuate the front soundstage and reproduce the spatial and discrete sounds of this active soundtrack. During the action based sequences the listening position is submerged into a 360 degree web of sound that bombards the listening position with a combination of well placed sound effects and ambience. This is a dynamically strong audio mix that effectively utilizes low frequency effects to enhance impact making the presentation all the more involving. Bass response isn’t consistently of the ultra low variety but is has moments of room shaking energy that is just plain fun. I say turn this one and up and enjoy the ride.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Alternate ending pre-visualization – 7 minutes

  • (HD) All Access with Director Peter Berg – In movie interactive feature that takes an in-depth look behind the scenes with the film’s director

  • (HD) USS Missouri VIP Tour – 20 minutes

  • (HD) Preparing for battle – 11 minute featurette

  • (HD) All hands on deck: The Cast – 11 minute featurette

  • (HD) Engage in battle – (2 short features totaling 6 minutes) – Shooting at sea & All aboard the fleet

  • (HD) Commander Pete – 5 minute featurette on working with director Peter Berg

  • (HD) The visual effects of Battleship – 11 minute production featurette

  • Universal’s Second Screen app – Enjoy behind the scenes features via an interactive experience on your networked tablet or computer

  • pocket BLU

  • My scenes bookmark feature

  • D-Box Motion Code enabled

  • BD-Live access

  • Bonus DVD

  • Digital Copy

  • Ultraviolet Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

Based on the Hasbro Game of the same name Battleship is a poorly conceived alien invasion film that is made better by decent action sequences and high production elements. I must admit to enjoying it more than expected in spite of itself. It comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios Home Entertainment in a solid offering that features reference quality audio/video and an above average assortment of supplemental material, including Blu-ray Exclusives, that looks behind the scenes. Battleship is tough to recommend but if you’re a genre fan this one is kind of fun and just might be worth picking up at the right price.

I enjoyed this movie for what it was, an entertaining action flick. There was another very subtle tie-in with the game if you happened to notice the shape and action of the Alien ammo getting fired into the ships!

One of the worst first acts of a movie that I've seen in quite a while, but once the action kicks-in it was enjoyable (in a guilty kind of way). One aside...the acting by pretty much the entire cast was somewhere between horrible and terrible biggrin.gif

Great review Ralph...totally agree on the Audio and Video, but I would only give is 2/5 for the movie biggrin.gif

Check out the Master List of Bass thread in the subwoofer thread....the movie has been high pass filtered. I watched it as well and found the ULF bass severely lacking in this movie. There was bass throughout the movie....but around 25-30hz range. One of the biggest letdowns as this movie should of contained some ULF bass since it had all those massive ships and gun fires....2nd biggest dissapointment since 2012 release.

Ahh well, i did enjoy the movie though...it surprised me too, it was a great popcorn flick! biggrin.gif

Thanks Ralph for making me feel less guilty for enjoying this in the theater. The movie was fun and I enjoyed watching Brooklyn Decker a great deal. I also enjoyed the actual Iraq veteren who shared her action scenes. A nice bit of reality from a real hero. The rest of the movie required extra butter and salt on the popcorn. Good thing it's not a special Criterion edition, because I don't want to spend a lot of cash for my shameful bad taste for cheesy movies.

All these comments has reassured me to take a chance on this 1 so I will rent it. I knew it didn't do that well and the initial reviews on it were not good. Thankfully the high marks it's gotten for it's AQ and PQ make up for the problems the film itself has. biggrin.gif

Especially for the bass! A movie like this you would expect to have killer bass, and thankfully it sounds like it does!!!!! smile.gif

Watch the first five minutes then take the dog for about a 20 minute walk and let the movie play. You'll enjoy the movie so much more if you miss most of the first act biggrin.gif

There are some spirited debates on the imdb forums regarding the solid idea that the aliens in this movie are actually the good guys, whereas the Navy are the aggressors. Many plot points suggest this is true, and it makes for an intriguing second viewing. That said, it's still very much a big loud movie where stuff blows up real good, and the little nods to the original Battleship game are fun. Special mention goes to the design of the aliens, who are far more akin to our own species than some fantastical race of insectoid creatures or some such. Also worth mentioning is the USS Missouri and her original crew sequence, which was pretty awesome if not far fetched. Personally, I liked it a lot more than I expected to, and the added ambiguity of "are the aliens evil or not" angle was surprising and actually elevates this movie more than it perhaps deserves.

Thanks for the review Ralph.

Saw this in the theater with a friend and we were the only ones who showed up for it. So we did a bit of MST3k while watching it. When they dropped the anchor we both said "yeah RIGHT.. "

I looked at it along the same lines as Battle L.A. Just a mindless popcorn action flick. Was entertaining in that respect and did what it was supposed to do. smile.gif

Been aboard the Missouri a number of times. Never tire of wondering around her. One cannot appreciate just how big the main guns are until you're standing under them.

Will be adding this to my collection just for fun.

Hilarious. I don't have a dog to walk but might substitute a good dinner in it's place.

Rihanna's acting was the worst. I seen it with about a 3/4 packed house and evrytime she had a speaking part almost the entire place was yelling at her on screen with death threats and all! Mostly adults too. I've never seen anything like that at a public movie.

I quite liked this movie as a popcorn flick when you turn off your brain, but I also noticed the lack of bass when there was big explotions and the big guns fire...

I couldn't agree more Dave, I rented this over the weekend, terrible movie even for a mindless action packed "pop corn" flick. OTOH the audio and video were stellar.
Glad I rented.

This post is so right on its not even funny.
As bad as this film was, I realize they couldnt scrap the whole thing and start over.
But HOW could anyone have sat through the opening 20 minutes and decide its ok to release it like that?

Sorry, the first act has left a sour taste in my mouth.
Everything after that could have been Jaws+Raiders Of the Lost Ark + Gone With The Wind
and I still would of come away from watching this thinking 'what a terrible movie'.

And I wont even go into the whole Rihanna thing....Ugh.....

(Please Liam, next time someone offers to put you in a movie that also has Rihanna in one of the main roles....RUN!...)

The difference between this movie and 'Dark Knight Rises'?

This movie knew it was stupid and had fun with it.

Honestly? Wow...at lest "Dark Knight Rises" had a sensible (yet overly long) plot, excellent acting, and a hot chick who could actually act. Is it the best Batman movie? No, but it's much better than "Battleship" by a pretty large margin.

I'm afraid I just can't turn off my brain enough for Hollywood anymore... how many times do we have to have a summer movie where sitting in a darkened theater in a vegetative state was required to get any enjoyment out of it?

The quality of Hollywood produced "popcorn flicks" is just sinking to all time lows. IMHO, of course.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Dan, you're not alone in your assessment.

I watched this on Vudu at a buddies place and was thoroughly entertained. Given the A/V ratings above, I plan on adding this one to the collection.
