"Un monstre à Paris"

Film Synopsis:

Paris, 1910. Panic sweeps the city as floodwaters rise and a monster is on the loose! Meanwhile a wacky inventor, his camera-crazy best friend, and a madcap monkey are on a mission to protect the beast, Franc, as he holds a rare and special talent. With the help of the beautiful but feisty singer Lucille, the team harbors the monster to keep him from the ghastly wannabe Mayor, Commissioner Maynott, who has a plan to capture Franc and reveal him to be nothing more than a monstrous danger to the people of Paris.

My Take:

How this one got lost in the shuffle in the huge world of animated features is beyond me, but 2011's A Monster in Paris was an enjoyable, gorgeous and fun romp for the whole family. Directed by Bibi Bergeron (A Shark Tale), this is the story of Emile, a shy film projectionist and his best friend, the outspoken delivery driver Raoul. The two, while out on a delivery to a scientists flat, end up inside, against instructions of his crazy sign wielding monkey. Raule decides it a good idea to play with some of the serums in vials, and when he pours one called " super powered fertilizer", he creates the titular character, The Monster in Paris---oh la la.

What transpires is light and fun, though a bit hectic at times. Its really did captivate my little one, even during slower more plot and dialogue driven sequences. The second half introduces us to a few more characters, has some whacky and interweaving plots and some surprising musical moments thanks to the singing of Sean Lennon and Vanessa Paradis. Though not having the underlying heart of Pixar or some other animated stories, as a kids take on a horror flick in the ilk of The Phantom of the Opera and Frankenstein, A Monster in Paris succeeds in being an engaging and recommended bit of family entertainment.

Parental Guide:

This film is rated for mild thematic material.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

A Monster in Paris comes to Blu-ray from Shout! Factory featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22.7 mbps, MVC Encoded 3D video, and DTS-HD MA 5.1 sound that has an average bitrate of 2.6 mbps

2D is where A Monster in Paris shines as it is a great looking animated feature that is not of the normal bright and poppy sort. Its a bit more subdued, with an almost filmic quality yet fine details are as defined as expected. I enjoyed this animation and think its slightly outside the box aesthetics will be enjoyed. As a 3D piece, it turns out to not be the best, but a passable experience that seems more like an afterthought then a native 3D production. It excels with depth into the screen but falters with off screen visuals and I faults a small sense of loss in finer details. The DTS-HD MA track is impressive with a fully immersive surround experience, great clarity in the dialogue as well as deep bass and dynamics when called upon.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Trailer

  • DVD Copy

  • Digital Copy

  • Final Thoughts:

An unexpected and unheard of little animation gem ,A Monster in Paris will be enjoyed by the whole family. I loved its aesthetics and animation style and was pleased with the packaging of a Blu-ray, a 3D Blu-ray, a digital copy and a DVD, as this has made it onto my tablet and into the car for my son. Too bad there are no special features. Give it a shot, you will dig it.

Lee, In the Parent Guide section, you have it listed as "Rated R for language throughout, some sexual content, brief drug use, and nudity". That can't be right, can it? eek.gif

Can anybody confirm language and subtitle options...

"Audio Format(s): English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
Subtitles: English"

Really? No original French audio? eek.gif

No Spanish options, at least subtitles? rolleyes.gif

Pls double-triple-check for me guys? Thx! smile.gif

I mean, I was really looking forward to this but without more options for audio and captions I don't think I'd buy this after all...
