"This $*%! Ain’t Paranormal"

Film Synopsis:

When a young couple moves in to their dream place, they soon discover they’re not alone. Now, Malcolm will go to hilarious extremes - including hiring a priest, a psychic, and a team of modern-day Ghostbusters to get his place and his sex life back to normal.

My Take:

A haunted house is a parody that pokes fun at found footage horror flicks such as the Paranormal Activity films. Co-written by star Marlon Wayans this is exactly what you might expect and is crass, stupid funny filmmaking that is best viewed when one has had a few beers and is possibly more forgiving of overtly silly/crude site gags and pallid spoof humor. As a fan of the genre it parodies I found a few chuckles here and there but otherwise this is simply raunchy comedy and not much else.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for crude and sexual content, language and come drug use.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

A haunted house comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 33 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.1 Mbps.

Intended to replicate the found footage “documentary” as seen through the eyes of “video cameras” etc. this film uses both hand held and stationary camera perspectives often switching back and forth. As such many times the video rarely resembles high definition/film although this adheres to the filmmaker’s intention. Conversely there are a handful of shots that look very good and reveal appreciable levels of detail and depth. When appropriate, colors appear natural and images display well balance contrast, gratifying black levels and good shadow detail. I had no complaints with the stylized video quality which contributed to the source material.

The lossless audio presentation had no trouble conveying the predominantly front loaded elements present in the soundtrack recording. Dialogue reproduction was very good with clear intonation and fair room penetration. The mix did a nice job of handling the various directional cues associated with the hand held camera’s perspective and near field simulation. There is some off camera and atmosphere creating sounds mixed to various points in the sound field and the effect is seamlessly blended. Dynamic range, clarity and bass definition was excellent. All in all this made for a very decent audio/video presentation.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) How to survive a paranormal presence – 2 minute production featurette

  • My scenes bookmark feature

  • Ultraviolet Digital Copy

  • Digital Copy

  • Bonus DVD

Final Thoughts:

A haunted house is a pallid parody that spoofs on found footage horror flicks such as the Paranormal Activity films. It’s crass for crass sake and other than one or two chuckle worthy moments it’s a complete swing and miss. On a positive note it’s presentation on Blu-ray from Universal Studios Home Entertainment is solid however fans will be disappointed in the lack of bonus material. If you’re in the mood for spoof horror slapstick with a raunchy edge, give it a rent, otherwise this one’s a pass.

I couldn't pass Ralph, I had to see for myself. This movie is bad on so many levels, so I'll address it in this way. If this is the mentality of the younger generation then it's no wonder Django Unchained is accepted and that Mtn Dew ad was made, and thankfully pulled. People need to evolve... being "funny" should not take so much negative effort..ok enough. I did like Essence Atkins, she was a bright spot in the movie. I've got to find a movie that will take the taste of this out of my mouth.
