"In America you're on your own"

Film Synopsis:

Jackie Cogan is an enforcer hired to restore order after three dumb guys rob a Mob protected card game, causing the local criminal economy to collapse.

My Take:

Killing Them Softly is an odd duck. I wanted to love it, but in retrospect I just liked it. Brad Pitt was incredible as the secretly philosophical hit-man who "Kills Them Softly". Great turns by Gandolfini, Loitta, Jenkins and McNairy help sell the film as well. Director Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James) did a great job with the look of the film, used some cool camera techniques and kept me into things more than I should have been--he is a filmmaker to keep your eye on. Where Killing Them Softly lost me was in its overt want to be a clever allegory for the US financial meltdown. The parallel is that the robbers here would be the thieving investment bankers that cause the collapse of the economy , or here the Boston area criminals financial streams. Wow, man, deep huh? Not really. This one is best when it is showing off its technical prowess, whether it be the acting, cinematography or direction...or during one of its many scenes that as standalone parts are awesome. As a whole this is a uniquely dark and depressing look into the world of crime that never wholly pays off.

Parental Guide:

Rated R for violence, sexual references, pervasive language, and some drug use

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Killing Them Softly comes to Blu-ray from Anchor Bay featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 20.6 mbps and DTS-HD MA 5.1 sound that has an average bitrate of 2.8 mbps

This stylistic film shines on Blu-ray with a gritty yet detailed presentation that has real depth on-screen. Stellar black levels only help things out, as does its rendering of shadow detail. Colors are a bit subdued, but this is by choice and works well with the story and films feel. I didn't note any compression issues at all. The Lossless audio track is a keeper as well. It's impressive when it flexes it muscles with gunfire, dynamics and low end. Sonically this one does have moments that really do shine. Mostly it broods atmosphere which seems to ooze throughout the sound-stage with dialogue that never misses a beat.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Deleted Scenes

  • (HD) Making Of

  • (HD) Trailers

  • DVD Copy

  • Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

A worthy watch, but never completely satisfying, Killing Them Softly sure looks and sounds great. Considering its superlative performances by all involved as well as some great direction and cinematography, it was an enjoyable hour and a half that didn't live up to its own lofty goals, not mine. Rental recommendation.

I agree Lee.

I saw this a few weeks back on BR and it looks and sounds pretty good.

The first 45 minutes or so were pretty good. And it was shaping up nicely. But after that it didn't really seem to have anywhere else to go for the last half so it just kinda dragged on with alot of nothing happening. frown.gif

It kinda almost became a different movie.

Great cast also.

Pretty much what I thought as well. Thanks to both for expressing it for me smile.gif

I agree that the movie turned out differently than I thought it would. I was hoping for a more traditional mafia movie and I thought Pitt and Gandolfini would make this really good. Although Pitt's character was cool, Gandolfini's was pretty awful. I understand what the movie was trying to say but I just didn't care.

I found KTS to be an impeccable film. It reminded me of the early Tarantino movies.

Watched this in movie theater. This movie is horrible and it dragged on for eternity. I would have killed myself softly if I had a gun.

This was one of the worst movies I've watched in a long time , I'm surprised Brad Pitt even made a movie like this.

I concur...disappointing is being kind.

Simply one of those "gangster multi-murder flicks" you've seen at least a dozen times. Nothin memorable nor worth sticking around 2 hours to see.

A/V side is fine.

Actual phone call (see pic to left):

Tech (responding to laughter): "I'm sorry sir, did I miss something?"

Me: "Yeah, a case of Diet Mountain Dew walking across my living room."

I was disappointed with this movie...although i knew this movie had a deeper meaning by drawing parallels with a capitalistic economy (?) i simply didnt care enough to decipher it. 2 things that i would say about it, one is if you want to make a clever movie atleast make it entertaining. Secondly this movie just tries too hard to be clever, almost feels pretentious

Wow. To compare KTS to Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction is lunacy at best.

I don't think he was comparing, just that it "reminded him".

It did sort of remind me of having sort of a slight Tarantino kinda feel going for it to. Or that it at least seemed to try to have that sort of feel or vibe.

Some reviewers have said as such also.

Lee,

" As a whole this is a uniquely dark and depressing look into the world of crime that never wholly pays off."

I think that you meant for the bottom rung only while the "thieving investment bankers" got away with it. As the saying goes, if you owe the bank a dollar, you go to jail while for a $1,000,000, you're a partner.

Like his other film, this one was darn depressing despite artistic success. It's just not my kind of "entertainment".

Thanks for the review.

I thought the movie was ok. Definitely different than what I expected. I noticed, however, that I had to turn the volume much higher than I normally do while watching movies. Seems it was mixed very quiet. Once I finally got it to where I could hear dialogue it did sound good enough. Anyone else notice this?
