"If you think you know the story, you don't know Jack"

Film Synopsis:

The ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack, a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds.

My Take:

Children's fairytales revamped for the tween and above audience seem to never succeed that well. Consider 2011s Red Riding Hood, 2012s Snow White and The Huntsmen, and 2013s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. All were disappointments. Confusion seems to be part of the demise--Is it a kids flick? Is it for grown-ups? How scary is it? These were questions that lingered from those over to this, making me wonder what exactly is Jack The Giant Slayer all about and is it for kids??? That is the films main issue, it never really defines itself and for that it lost audience due to marketing. The irony is that Jack The Giant Slayer is not that bad, and the best of the bunch I mentioned above. To me, its confusion of where it sat in the marketplace is why a film that cost about 200 Million only made about 65 Million domestically. But It seemed plagued from the beginning, with vague trailers, a title change from "Jack The Giant Killer"...even 4 writers.

It's a simple yet effective rewriting of the Jack and the Bean stalk tale we all know. Here our protagonist Jack (Nicholas Hoult) gets mixed up in a plot to overtake the King (Ian McShane) and eventually the world by Lord Roderick (Stanley Tucci). As events unfold, Jack ends up with magic beans and accidentally creates a beanstalk that connects Earth to the land of the Giants. As luck would have it his new crush, Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) gets sent up the beanstalk as it grows and the King sends his best men, including Lord Roderick, Jack, Elmont (Ewan McGregor), and a few more after the Princess.

A big adventure up the beanstalk, in the land of the giants, then a war on earth unfold, as does a love story between Jack the Isabelle. It's a pretty wholesome film with no crude sexual references, no curses...but it is violent with lots of references and some visuals of people getting eaten and a bunch of other nasty busniess. As a movie it was fun, different then I anticipated, and something I would give another viewing one day. Some of the sets looked a bit like sets in glorious HD, the CG giants were visually cool, but director Bryan Singer used them too much and could have used a bit of restraint before showing giants everywhere. He should have taken a cue from Jaws and King Kong there!

FYI I talked to parents with kids in the 5-8 range who ended up seeing this with their children who were too young to see it and were "Freaked out".

Parental Guide:

Rated PG-13 for intense scenes of fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief language

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Jack The Giant Slayer comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment featuring 1080p MVC 3D video, 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 23.4 Mbps and DTS-MA HD 5.1 sound that has an average bitrate of 3.8 Mbps

Wow, just a brilliant presentation that looks so good, the sets started to look like sets. The colors can go from golden tinged to super life-like, all with fantastic pop. Blacks are some of the most rich and stable I have seen, depth and dimension in the 2D version are stunning. These things all translate well over to the 3D counterpart (housed on its own BD-50), unfortunately the 3D is not the most awe inspiring I have seen. I preferred the 2D completely. The 3D was mainly depth of field on screen with limited reach into the viewing area. I expected more, but was generally pleased. Where this one might get replay is its aggressive, loud, bold and ultra-reference audio track. When the beanstalk shoots up be prepared to see what your system is capable of. It gave mine a work-out, and I was damn proud of my subs!! Dialouge never gets lost in the shuffle, the surround channels and panning are impeccable. This is one of the best audio experiences I have had in my room.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) 2D and 3D versions

  • (HD) Become a Giant Slayer

  • (HD) Deleted Scenes

  • (HD) Gag Reel-

  • UV Copy

  • DVD Copy

Final Thoughts:

Jack The Giant Slayer got a bad rap. It was pretty good, and the best of the bunch of re-vamped and pretty much crappy fairy tales films that have recently come out. The film whizzes by in its almost two hour runtime, with some great CG, and the last hour of almost non-stop action. Just remember this is not for young kids, 7 and above I would say...and a tough 7 at that! Reference 2D video and audio make this worth a watch, but I am not sure if the added expense of the 3D version is worth it. Give it a viewing and let us know what you think of this ones amazing soundtrack!

Thanks for doing the review, Lee! smile.gif

I've been wondering about this one for a while now, so am very glad to see the high audio/video scores. It looks like the 2D version may be the way to go. Looking forward to it...

Blame Warners...they are the ones who started both delayed releases and stripped-down, bare-bones rental discs.

HI ALL. So just got done watching the 3D version; true the sound is AMAZING, the story; I liked it. The 3D not to impressed, it is not bad just lack of depth for most of the movie.

Cool. I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit in the theater so Im very tempted to just get the 2D version and save a little money so I can enjoy the soundtrack. Nice review.

I didn't think the 3d was too bad. In fact, it was very enjoyable. It seemed well balanced, but at times was enough to make me blink at stuff flying towards me. It also seemed less fatiguing and more natural. Overdone in your face 3d is more of a distraction from the story IMO. I didn't have very high expectations for this film, but was pleasantly surprised with it. They could've done without the nose picking giant though.

There seems to be a few "jack and the beanstalk" movies in the mix right now.
I started watching one on Amazon VOD (thinking it was this) and about 40 Minutes into it I looked at my daughter and said, "want to watch, Hey Arnold! instead?" and we did.

The review was spot on for the sound. Between the rain, giant's foot steps, the room was completely immersed in sound the whole time. My wife and I enjoyed this movie a lot. I wish every action movie would be mixed as well as this one.

Wife and I caught this one last nite. Very enjoyable!

We both noticed one very prominent f-bomb by the 2 headed Giants smaller head toward the end.
Surprised us both as you would think this leaned toward the younger market.....

Well, it is rated PG-13 (which indicates that some material may not be appropriate for children under 13). For a PG-13 movie, one (and only one) "bomb" is allowed. Many filmmakers spend a lot of time wondering just where they can place that sole option!
